connect a TomTom to the ACC-switch
« on: January 27, 2009, 03:37:03 AM »

I mounted the TomTom rider 2 -GPS-navigation at the right-side of the handlebar , near the middle , it`s the best position , i could have find and still all instruments are visible from the rider`s place .
Is it possible to throw the cable below the tank , from the front to "under the seat" without removing the tank ?
How do i have to connect the cable from the TomTom that i can activate it with the ACC-switch , is this a work i should better let make the dealer ?

i usually install a cigarette socket to my bikes, i mount it where ever i can under the seat by the oil tank, then i can plug in any device, ie tomtom, mobile phone charger etc. Its a shame moco didnt install a power socket in the fairing, like they did on the Buell Ulysses.

I'd suggest to have the dealer run a cable straight to the mount of the Tomtom. Use a black cloth-braided cable (schwarz, stoffüberzogen ;-), and do not have this switched. It should be on/off with ignition. This way the Tomtom will automatically start when you turn on the ignition and will turn off (there is a setting in the Tomtom menu for this), when you turn the ignition off. No need to have it separately switched!

Ride safely,
Louis

The E-Glides do have a cigarette lighter type power socket in the fairing. With so much room, I am surprised that the SERG wouldn't have one.

Yes , the SERG has a cigarette lighter on the left side of the sharknose fairing , but where to find a water-resistant plug for the TomTom  and then you have to route the cable to it , that does not really look good i guess .
@ Louis , you mean to connect the cable just at the " ignition-lock " ? That would be the shortest way , sure .But then there is no additional electrical-protection , at the ACC there would be one , am i wrong ?

u should be riding fast enough that a water proof tomtom plug is not required. i havnt seen a 09SERG in the flesh yet but do u really think the plug would need to be water proof?

There are waterproof cigar plugs available thru Marine Catalogs like West Marine.  spyder

The cable routing from cigarette lighter to TomTom is the bigger problem .
I´ll check the ignition-idea from Louis .
But the ACC-switch idea would be electrical protected . Hmmmm .

I am not sure if you need a fuse, but there should also be a wire under the seat, always on, but fused.

I am not an expert on the SERG. But I saw one today in orange/black at the Frankfurt dealer. Very impressive, but also very flamboyant, if you know what I mean. I like the silver one much better.

I had the dealer hard wire mine. They ran the wires under the dash. Very clean. I have mine mounted in teh center because I tend to put so much other crap on the bars there was no better place.

It's not that difficult to run a lead under the tank.  Take out the rear bolt.  Loosen the front pair.  Watch the front of the tank closely for contact and lift the rear as high as you can.  You can fish a stiff wire through and use it to pull something.  Not a difficult chore.

There are times you might want the switch on in accy mode but not want the GPS on.  Radio in a parking lot or other reasons.  So having it switched separately would be my preference also.  Run it's +/- leads back under the tank and catch the connector for the accessory switch that already exists.  Harley makes a Y connector to meet that plug or just get some Deutsch connector parts and make your own.

hooked my sat radio up last week. you can remove the spedo/tach cover and use a connector to splice right into the acc switch. two wires comming off of it, i think they were both orange, one with a stripe. one will come on with ignition switch and other with ignition switch on and acc switch on (use a light testor)  this makes it fused but dont have to run that far. verry easy! :orange:

His bike is a SERG, there is no room in the center for a GPS unit.

I have put it directly right of the center , that is ok for me .
@ RYANCVO , you mean that i can route directly to the ACC-switch and connect the TomTom cable there ?

yes, but u will have to have a 12v to 5v adapter. the cig plug adapter will not work if u wire here. cig lighter is 12v and adapter changes to 5v. if you cut adapter off of cord and plug to 12v it will kill ur tomtom. my hardwire sat radio came with hardwire adapter but you can problaby find 1 at electronics store. just find one that is 12v to 5v with the same size connection to the tomtom
