Dual horns?
« on: December 08, 2012, 06:49:46 PM »

I am looking for a louder horn for my ultra and have looked at several online. I was thinking of this strictly for more safety. But what about those moments when you don't need a loud honkin' horn and you may want something more normal? I looked at the Screaming Banshee but don't like that.

Suggestions or ideas? video links to show the sound is welcomed

Many of us use the mini Beast by Propad. It works great and gets a car/truck drivers attention. It installs very easy. I like that it's sound goes out away from you not into your lowers like airhorns with trumpets especially if you have an Ultra etc.
My question is why would you want a "Normal Horn" too? If you need to use a horn for anything you need it to get attention. You also don't need the reactionary delay of trying to choose if the situation dictates a loud or soft horn. You will have other things to decide and do to avoid an accident, horn selection shouldn't be another chore.

Thanks. I was probably over thinking this. I do like the look of the trumpets and of those I liked the big horn from howards horns the most. But the best sounding....to me atleast...is the mini beast

Thanks again

Another option - Kuryakyn Hidden Horns.

Anybody tried these... have any feedback? I do like the fact that they are hidden.

I have never bashed a manufacturer....ever!!!
But I feel I have to warn you.........DO NOT BUY A HOWARDS HOG HORN PRODUCT.
Had one on my Ultra SE when I bought it. In less then 1 year ( bike had less then 10 ,000 miles on it) it fell apart. Cheap made... cheap material!
Called to ask about if anything could be done...didn't really expect anything ...but I thought I would at least ask.
The most rude customer service person I have ever talked to ......ever. First of all he tried to deny that it was even their product...when it is stamped right on there. Seen where it was going very quickly...and terminated trying to get them to stand behind anything...what ever happened to pride in your product.
I highly advice buying anything else.....mine is not the only negative review.
Enough said.

Personally, I'd stay away from the mini-beast.  I had mine about 6 months and it stopped working.  I tried to contact Pro-pad but couldn't get a response so I took it apart and found that a tab on the plastic bracket holding the trumpet to the air compressor had broken and the horn had come away from the compressor.  I also noticed that the chrome housing was starting to rust on the inside.  Fixed the compressor and got it working again...for about 2 more months.  Took it apart again and found that the o-ring had blown out.  Replaced the o-ring and got it working again.  Horn stopped working one more time.  This time I just threw it in the garbage.  I don't know if anyone else has had problems with these horns, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I went back to the HD stock horn with a horn cover off the 2012 Convertible CVO.  Looks and sound fine.  The newer stock horns are louder than the original on my '05 anyway.

If you prefer a better tone and a little more sound without the big trumpets or the other problems folks have mentioned, get a high/low horn set meant for automotive use and either mount one horn in the stock location and the other in the fairing, or just mount both in the fairing.  Harley used to sell a kit to add a second horn in the fairing on the batwing bikes, but it's no longer offered.  It wouldn't take much to fabricate a simple bracket and run a couple wires to do it yourself though.

BTW, unless something has changed in the past few years that I don't know about, RIVCO makes good stuff.  Check the link smkblwr posted.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy horns from Metal Arts from California.  The horns were loud when I first installed them.  After a few months, they performed poorly.  I contacted Metal Arts numerous times to return them within their 1 year warranty and they would not return calls or emails.  They were very nice when I was buying;  100% non-responsive when I needed to file a warranty claim.  Buyer beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I ended up getting the mini beast from pro pad. Got it all chrome ( of course ) in the typhoon style. Installed it today and absolutely love the look and the sound. Sorry no pics yet as the bike is in storage so no way of getting a good pic. But I love it right now. My only concern is it only has one mounting bracket and it is a heavier unit than the stock one.  :2vrolijk_21:

I have had the Kuryakyn Hidden Horns for years on two different bikes and love them... The dual trumpet horns sound good and I really like the fact that they are hidden.  With them facing down they really make a fair bit of noise bouncing off the pavement.

My latest bike with the hidden dual horns installed is a 2008, but if you check with them directly or at your dealer I'm sure they have them to fit the newer bikes as well.

Was it a pretty straight forward install or did you have to mod anything to make it fit?

No problems at all... Simply bolt, plug & play!  No mods required and took about 30 minutes.
