To Split or Not to Split? (antenna that is)
« on: February 02, 2014, 11:56:15 AM »

I enjoy changing the look of the SERG often (solo, two up, chopped pac, King pac, etc.) so I'm constantly installing/removing the antenna.  Was wondering if I could add an inside-the-fairing antenna with a splitter so I could leave the factory antenna off when I want & still have AM/FM/WB.  I've read both positives and negatives in this topic about aftermarket antennas but with a splitter it would add yet another option.  Thoughts from knowledgeable people?

Let me know "if" you find a good working in the fairing antenna. I installed one and it sucks!

Jswerve,
Which inside-the-fairing antenna did you go with?  The four most popular brands seem to be:  Tune Trapper, Hogtenna (Biketronics), Flexpower (J & M) and Dakota Digital - in random order.  Only Tune Trapper is unamplified (no 12v).

I tried the tune trapper in my fairing. It now sits in the bike parts locker

Mine was bought of eBay and my buddy has the boom antenna.  They both suck.

2 antennas on one line is never a good idea.
Radios running 2 antennas have 2 discreet inputs and a diversity circuit that will switch to the antenna with better reception.
With 2 on one line, your reception will never be great

As an antenna guy these bike antennas aren't the best items designed by HD. The whips are a simple design that works off of the motorcycle ground plane and hiding an antenna inside the fairing is asking for trouble. I'm actually surprise no one has developed a better low profile antenna, but then again, I'm not sure it would be cost prohibitive.

Anything other than the whips is going to give you poor overall performance; good luck with your search though. I look forward to hearing about what you find.

I tried this with my Street Glide.

I ran an under fairing antenna, split to the stock whip antenna.

When using them together, or separately, they never worked well due to the splitter. You're better off not splitting them, at all, and using one or the other.

Also, I tried every under fairing antenna I could (HD, powered, not powered, cheap, expensive, ect.) and none of them worked very well.

Thanks

Found this vendor just out of curiosity concerning this topic. I do not have any dealings with this vendor but he does list some H.D. shops that distribute his products so maybe call and talk to them for a reference.

JMO I wouldn't consider any remote antenna that fits under the fairing that is not powered; these small packages are trying to emulate an actual dipole antenna and cannot accomplish that without help; just sayin.

Again, good luck gentleman, trying to be helpful is all.   :2vrolijk_21:

Tried the J&M fairing antenna and it worked very poorly.  Would not recommend
