Harley-Davidson Inc. HOG, -3.28% said Tuesday it is voluntarily recalling 238,300 motorcycles for a hydraulic clutch assembly. The motorbike giant said the recalls involves all model year 2017 and 2018 Touring, Trike and CVO Touring models, as well as certain 2017 Softail models. The company is expecting the recall to cost $35 million, which will be booked in the fourth quarter. The company announced the recall in a regulatory filing, shortly after reporting earnings for the third quarter that blew past estimates. Shares were up 1.7% premarket, but have fallen 27.9% in 2018, while the S&P 500 SPX, -1.55% has gained 3.1%.

The hydraulic clutch system with secondary clutch actuator part numbers 37200131and 37200131A on the subject motorcycles may exhibit an internal leak of fluid past the secondary clutch actuator piston/seal. If this leak continues for an extended period, the clutch master cylinder reservoir could lose enough fluid toexpose the hydraulic clutch circuit to air, which may result in the inability togenerate enough lift to disengage the clutch.

If this condition remains undetected, it could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle when started in gear, first shifted into gear, or coming to a stop.

Remedy
Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will install a new secondary actuator piston assembly from the recall kit, P/N 91500093. This service will beprovided at no charge to the customer.
We strongly urge you to take your motorcycle to your dealer to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Should you choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. Some product campaigns may have expired and you may have to pay for the service. Please see your local Harley-Davidson dealer for further details

Local dealer says parts available mid November.  I am #1 on the list, looks like I get a "free" clutch fluid change as part of the recall but not sure about that.

I'm'a guessin that a clutch not operating correctly outweighs engine sumping and transmission to primary fluid migration...as long as you can activate the clutch when it sumps so you pull off the road, you are good to go...

I personally like the hydraulic clutch so as to not wanting to adjust cables after all these years but come on.  How hard is it to get a hydraulic clutch right?  My '15 had a clutch recall and they actually extended my warranty (just on the clutch) a few months because of it.  Now we have another clutch issue?  Dang it all boys, who is operating this train?

I've become a believer that HD should abandon engine development and farm that out to a contractor, like they did with the V-Rod Revolution.  If it wasn't so painful for those that spent a lot of money for a bike, it would be comical.

Little good that does me.  Might be snowing by the time they start doing the recall work, which means I have to wait until spring at the earliest.  Dealer won't provide transport (I am an hour away).   I might have to re-think our April plans to recreate our honeymoon anniversary ride to Key West.

I didn't ask and it (brake flush / brake fluid) was not specified on the work order / invoice.  It just referenced the recall number and didn't not give any listing of parts.  I know they would have had to at least bleed the clutch lines and I would think it would take a sufficient amount of fluid to totally flush and replace what was there.

Dealer did a clutch fluid flush as part of the recall procedure.  Unexpected - clutch is now easier to pull. Engage point is also sooner than before.  Very pleased, ended up with a smoother clutch operation.

UPDATE.  Friend talked to our local dealer to get appointment to take his 2017 Limited in for the clutch recall.  Dealer said he is waiting on new kits as H-D has changed something (seal I think) in the recall kit.  Anyone else heard about this?  Wonder if there'll be a recall on the recall, lol.

Need to confirm, but there may be a recall on the recall because of this new part.

Wouldn't be the first (or second, or third) time they had to recall the recalled bikes.  Same thing happened on the saddlebag mount recall, and the hydraulic clutch recalls, to name a couple.  It's just another sign of the attention to detail for which H-D is so famous.

I posted this to see if anyone else had heard of this.  I have not verified it but just heard about it from a friend whom I trust.  Once he takes his bike in I asked him to see if he could get verifiable info.  Service department said they were having difficulty getting kits in a timely manner and had to update bikes in their inventory before they could be sold so we were wondering if perhaps the moco got another vendor involved in making the kits and changed some part numbers to differentiate between vendors.  Just speculation at this point.

I have a 2017 Harley SGS and I received the recall notice early this winter. I called them a few weeks ago to set up an appointment and the service manager said that he was waiting on the 2nd batch of recall clutch kits and he would call me when they came in. He called yesterday and he received the updated kits and he set up an appointment for me to change out the parts.

I asked him what HD changed in the updated kits and he said he was unaware of what they changed.

Exactly the problem.  And new bikes coming in that they want to sell will get put at the top of the list.  Fortunately I got mine done last fall when the very first wave of the kits went out.  Since then availability has been a problem.

Same here, was one of the first bikes done, then not enough kits.

My friend and I had our 2017 SGS in for the recall this morning. It took about 45 minutes and everything works fine. We were not having issues with our bikes, but we wanted the updated retro kits installed

I took my bike in for service and what I got was the recall kits were recalled... or some BS like that...

So far no clutch issues so i figure leave well enough alone.

I ride in Honolulu traffic daily so if it was going to fail by not it would have.
