Manual Primary Chain tensioner?
« on: October 26, 2019, 06:37:44 AM »

I wanted to ask what other think of going to a manual primary chain tensioner over the automatic on on my twin cam. I have read many online posts of the OEM units over tightening the primary chain and causing wear on things like bearings and shafts.

Is there any truth to this?

Are the manual ones a good alternative? If so SE, Baker, twin power?

Are they really as loud as I have read, or are they just being installed to tight?

I have a Baker Fine Tooth Manual Primary Chain Adjuster. It's really easy to find the sweet spot. Never had an issue in 36k miles so far. Stock has larger teeth makes it sometimes too tight or too loose.

Does the baker have a replacement shoe if it wears out? Or is it time for a new unit?
Do you have the early Baker style or the new one with the added support?

Harley used a manual tensioner for years.

In my experience these tensioner shoes rarely if ever need replacement.  They will break in but once the rollers of the chain are riding on the shoe they stop wearing.
