Warranty / clutch question
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:15:17 PM »

Anyone know if the clutch plates are covered under the extended warranty?
Just hedging my bets here.
 :soapbox:
I just got off the phone with the service writer and they haven't gotten to inspect the plates yet (15k on them)
but he is saying they are not covered.  just like break pads.

My problem is I am having a hard time finding neutral.  After a long trip 3+ hrs with the last hour in slow moving holiday traffic I could not seem to find neutral at all.  Well my hand was getting sore so I chanced it and it was in neutral even though the light was not on.
I thought I might have burned out the bulb.  Later on it started to flicker and then once the bike had cooled down it comes on solid.

I still have a hard time finding neutral, but maybe it had been in neutral but the light was not on.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Steve

Yes  :2vrolijk_21:

Steve

You may want to switch to something other then Syn 3. Many of us have found it easier to find neutral once we got that out. I'm running the following for lubricants..

Motor - Amsoil
Tranny - Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof.
Primary - Redline MTL

Another option others have used is Mobil1. Not saying this is your problem, but I would definitely change from Syn3 anything is going to be better then that.

Is this something the stealer will have on hand?
Will they use it or is this something I have to do myself?

Thanks

It's a dealer, by dealer thing. Mine does carry Amsoil, but not Redline. However I can bring my own lubricants and they will use them when I have it serviced.

Steve, the auto chain tensioners can make neutral easier to location.  Significantly so in some case.  Intermittent light is either a chafed/crimped wiring problem or a neutral light switch problem though.  It's not impossible that a bulb's filament might intermittently touch after being burned out.  But it's not likely.

The Syn3 really has seemed to be a poor choice for primary usage.  Lots of things will work better.  The clutch plates themselves really should be ok at only 15k miles.  So hopefully no issue there.

Steve, if your shop won't use anything but Harley lubes, tell them to use Formula+ in the primary and trans rather than the SYN3.  It's Harley's latest gear and primary lube, and it works much better than motor oil in those two holes.

BTW, warranty doesn't usually cover worn out clutch plates, just like worn out brake pads, unless there is a specific defect that caused the plates to wear prematurely.  At 15k miles I wouldn't count on warranty replacing any friction materials.  On the plus side, it is highly unlikely that a worn clutch is causing your issue.

As for the neutral light being intermittent, the plunger on the switch may be sticking when the temps get high.  I had one do that on a previous bike.  If that's the case, changing to a better trans lube may correct that issue as well.  If not, the switch probably is covered under the extended service agreement.

Thanks for the feedback.

The intermitten with the light (where I thought it was burned out until it started to flicker) only happened that 1 time after it got really really hot.
Finding neutral has always been a problem for me. (unless it is really the light and not that I am not in neutral).  :nixweiss:

I remember when I first got my 05 Steve.  It might as well as not have had neutral.  If the motor was running you'd almost never find it.  Adjusting the primary chain at 1K miles made a big difference.  Much later added the automatic chain tensioner while doing some other work.  Since then neutral is easy enough to find that I never worry about it.

Is this a wet or dry process to do?
meaning can I get at it without draining and replacing fluids?
how much was the auto chain tensioner?

Thanks
Steve

There's only a quart of oil inside the primary so it's not a big deal in terms of fluids used.  You can check the chain tension through the inspection cover just forward of the derby cover.  If you wish to install the auto-tensioner you'll need to remove the outer primary cover.  That's not a big deal though.  One bolt gets the passenger footboard out of the way.  Two small ones get the rider footboard off its brackets.  With those moved you can get the primary cover on and off.

The tensioner itself is also an easy install inside the housing.  The link below is the part listed on eBay for less than a hundred bucks:

The HD extended warranty DOES cover the clutch plates and discs. I just did a clutch job under extended warranty for a customer. More than likely it is primary chain adjustment and fluid choice. When the clutch plates or discs go the typically do not grab well. Another thing to check is the clutch shell and / or hub for wear. All of these are covered under the warranty.

I agree change the fluid to a different brand in the primary and the transmission. Also if the nuetral switch is marginal as the transmission warm the case expands thus making the switch move farther away from the activation point. So I would try a switch also.

Too much oil in the primary will cause the same problem and is the easiest to correct.
