Clutch adjustment question
« on: July 10, 2009, 06:43:41 PM »

Ok, when adjusting a standard clutch I normally follow the book, loosen cable all out, remove cover, back out 11/16 nut, run out the set screw a bit and then tighten to just tension and then back off half a turn. reset nut and adjust cable. Issue Im having is that the clutch doesn't engage till a good 3/4-1" on let out. If I want to make the clutch engage almost as soon as the clutch is released I do what?
Adjust the clutch or cable. I'm almost thinking that I need to take 1/4 turn back into the clutch with the set screw.
Suggestions.

If I understand what you are trying to accomplish, you need to introduce more free play, not less.  You want the clutch to release and engage with the lever closer to the grip, right?  If that's correct, then when you adjust the release rod go to the loose side of the spec (1/2 to 1 full turn out).  Then adjust the cable free play to the maximum as well (1/16 to 1/8 inch).  If that still isn't good enough, add a little more free play at the cable.

Just be aware that if you go too far you may wind up with a dragging clutch that causes harder shifting and difficulty finding neutral.

got some direction, i went back and adjusted, with a 1/4 turn back out, it seems to be nice, smooth. I see there has to be a good balance between clutch & cable adjustments
check these directions out
