Maui, HI June 2 and 3 2012
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:05:25 PM »

This was a trip to Maui prior to this years Hawaii State Rally. The Rally Committee was working long distance... with some on Oahu and some on Maui. The Oahu members visited Maui for a two day stint to adventure and play.

We stopped by Famous Dave's BBQ in Lahaina. We ordered their feast that feeds 4-6.... It fed all 8 of us.

We also stopped at Ulupalakua Ranch for Elkburgers... but it was a special quarterly event.. they had Shepherds pie made with ground elk meat.... WOW~ that was good. Friends had the kalbi style elk ribs... those were great too. Elk are grass fed so there is little/no gamey taste... even the burgers are awesome...

Of course.. the trip was far too short (2 days) and realistically you need 5 days or more to enjoy the island and all of its fun places.

Thanks for the pics. Recognized some of the pics from renting a car there. (The church north of Lahaina. (Road out of bounds for rentals.)) The Hana road must be great on a bike. The trip back from Hana was rough in a car. The road to Hana defines "winding road".

Great looking food!

Get your "Motor Running Head", out on the highway!

What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men

The Church is in Kahakuloa Village... My wife's friends mom has a little snack stand out there at her house (Shave Ice... you guys call them snow-cones)

The return road from Hana (Kipahulu Falls to Ulupalakua) has been paved with a small portion still undone. I wanted to try it but we simply did not have enough time.

Here's some cool tourist facts about Hana:

Quote
The Hāna Highway is a 68-mile (109 km) long stretch of Hawaii State Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului with the town of Hāna in east Maui. On the east after Kalepa bridge, Hana Highway continues to Kīpahulu as Route 31 (Piilani Highway), the first section of which is unofficially considered to be part of Hāna Highway. Although Hāna is only about 52 miles (84 km) from Kahului, it takes about 2.5 hours to drive when no stops are made as the highway is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hāna, virtually all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. That one bridge, badly damaged by erosion, has been replaced by a parallel structure by a portable steel Bailey bridge erected by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

In August 2000 it was designated as the "Hana Millennium Legacy Trail" by President Bill Clinton, with the trail start designated in Pāʻia. The Hāna Highway is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The whole populous of the island is 120K people.. as compared to Oahu that has 900K +

So.. more island, less people, nicer roads... considering a move if I can afford it when I make 30 years and can get out of my job with full bennies.. I may take a similar job there.

On our honeymoon in August 1976(wow) we took a Ford Maverick rental on Hana Hwy! In those days it was excluded on the rental contract! I believe we blew up the transmission, but we saw some giant eyed cows along the way..what memories...
