Blue Ridge Parkway
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:42:08 AM »

If you have never rode the park way it is a must do. My brother and a friend decided to go with me. A trip I have been waiting to do for a long time. I decided to ride the Blue Ridge then on to DC to go to the NAVY museum. We check the weather for the weekend. We are leaving on Thursday and going to be back home On Tuesday. Weather is going to be good, 75 degs. And sunny.
We left Northwest GA area we are going take 3 day on the parkway then 1 day in DC then 2 day travel home by the Interstate.
We leave early Thursday morning stopping at Cracker-barrel for breakfast to start the day. We riding around the Ocoee river around the Nantahala river. Just a Great morning, Scenery was just Amazing. We stop in Cherokee NC for lunch just about 2 mile from the Beginning of the Parkway. We ride the Parkway about 100 mile and my throttle cable broke. WE pulled over to look at it. Nothing we could do on the side of the road. It was the return cable so I still had throttle. We rode to the next junction about 35  mile. that put us off in Asheville NC. We went ahead and got a motel. We watch a little TV and notice that we might get some rain from Sandy the Hurricane. No Worry. Got up the next morning and ate Breakfast then headed to the Harley shop about 10 mile away. They didn't have a cable to fix it not even a plain black one or take off. I pulled the old broke cable out and adjusted the pull cable so I could use it and we started again.
We take off again the ride is Amazing, weather is great. We ride for about 150 miles. Stopping ever so often at the over looks. We get off the parkway right before it gets dark. find some food and a motel. Just FYI the Holiday INN express was a nice place to stay. We ended up in Wilkesboro NC nice town. While setting in the motel watch TV the news tell us to get out of town there a Hurricane coming. We watch the local weather and take our chances.
We eat breakfast at the motel and head out. We get to the parkway and it is still amazing. but it getting foggy fast. You can't see 10 feet in front of you. But we keep pushing and it clears up in about 20 mile. the roads are wet but no rain. The colors are just Amazing the whole trip. We ride 250 mile the last 30 mile in the dark. But we was try to finish so we could make plans to go home or go it to DC. We got a motel in Windgrove VA. Watching the news we decided in the morning we need to head South that Sandy wasn't going to let us go any further. So we rode in the misty rain for about 300 miles before it stopped. We did 425 straight home 47 degs. But it was still the Best ride I have done. As I said everybody needs to ride the Parkway at least once. Keep Riding and Have Fun doing it.

As you click on reply, scroll down past the text box (where I'm typing right now) to where it says "Attach" in bold letters.  Click on where it says "Browse" and find where you have the photo on your computer and then when you click "Post" that photo will post in your reply.

Only one photo per post unless you have your photos hosted on the net somewhere (Picturtrail, Photobucket, Flicker, etc.).  Then that's a whole nuther process.

Rule #2.....don't pay any attention to that guy Greg. :huepfenlol2:

We did the same trip October 18-21 and it was a great trip. Colors were as awesome as you could dream them up in your head. We made a last minute decision to cancel the trip to Daytona due to storms in south Georgia on day of departure so we decided to do the entire BRP. So we ran over to Harrahs Casino in Cherokee, NC (2 1/2 hour ride)for the night. Woke up to this view

This was the first time we have been back to Harrahs Casino since they built the new towers. Great stay for $79, nice dinner and actually played a few hands and covered the stay. :orange: The best part is they allowed me to leave the bike parked in the valet so the next morning we were greeted with very cool and beautiful weather.

Since we didn't have time to plan this trip I have to admit a few mistakes. Once I arrived in Asheville, NC at the HD dealer for a break we I decide I may need to book a room. Well I call the Marriott reservation for a stop in Boone, NC and she laughs (I did not like her snicker) THEY HAVE NO ROOMS WITHIN 100 MILES!!! We cut off in Asheville get on the interstate 26 North and head to Johnson City, TN to a Fairfield Inn for the night. Joe (CVOSJOE) decides to join us for the trip. At this point we decide to change yet again the plan of attack. We will get on interstate 81 north and go all the way to Waynesville, VA and get on mile 0 and head back towards Cherokee, NC  :2vrolijk_21: We call a meeting at the firepit and have a drink and get the Ipads out and MAP!!

We had a nice (fast) ride up 81 and I will say it was brisk heck no it was VERY COLD and on that 250 mile run my mind was drifting to days gone by in sunny Florida in October

Other fellow CVO owners enjoying the warm while I have on everything I own.

Mile 186 or so  :huepfenjump3:

We make it to Waynesboro, VA at 2 pm and hop on the BRP at mile 0 and start back. The plan is to ride to Roanoke, VA for the night and finish up all day Sunday. Colors were great and memories were better. As Dierks says "Every mile a Memory"

We started around 9am from Roanoke, VA back on the BRP and arrive back in TN late that night. 1,100 mile journey and it was a GREAT trip. One I plan on doing again soon. You pay the price for time of year, college football cities, etc... but all in all a great trip. Anyone that makes the trip one thing you MUST REMEMBER. Plan of attack the ride is 475 miles so go to the top and come down or vice versa, book your stops in the peak season and get a confirmation number and last but not least:

FUEL!! There is none on the BRP. Didn't run out lets just say I tested the limits
