Driver got 16 months in jail & 3 years with no driver's license.  I wonder what the penalty here in the US would be?

Probably a ticket and deferred adjudication if they do not kill anyone in 6 months.

Would have probably got a similar sentence in Australia - ticket and good behaviour bond !!
