Found a used Aluma MC10 but no title problem
« on: June 21, 2015, 09:23:43 PM »

I find a used Aluma MC10 trailer locally. Problem is they VIN is faded an illegible and they do not have the title just a bill of sale. I have them talked down to $900 but I need to know how to get the VIN and trace it back to the last registered owner so I can obtain the title? Any ideas?

Is it licensed? If so you can trace it thru the license recipt but I assume you already thought of that. Talk to your tag office, see what they require on a missing VIN to re-establish. Bad part is someone could always come along and acid etch the VIN and take it, I think.
Otherwise call Alum and see if they stamped the frame somewhere obscure.

No she never licensed it.

I was told there may be a VIN etched somewhere on the frame.

I don't think these small trailers have titles like cars/motorcycles etc..  When I bought my new Legend trailer it came with a MSO (manufacturers statement of origin)..  It was never made into a title.  Got my Ohio's lisence plate with a bill of sale.  You still need to find the vin #..  Good luck!

Bob

I have a 2013 Aluma MC10 and it came with a MSO.
Easy peasy I just took that to the NCDMV with the bill of sale and they issued me a title.
Actually I bought the lifetime tag which I got that day and they mailed me a title later.
Every state could be different.

Had a similar issue with a trailer in my state. Had to have local LEO verify vin was missing and then took the VIN Verification form he filled out to DMV and they issued me a new State Vin number and tag to put on the trailer.

Interesting. I'll call down to the motor vehicle office tomorrow and weigh my options.

Does your state allow home built?  As a last ditch you can claim home built and add your own vin number.

This works....

At least here.

For the title issue, all the advice holds true. Check with local DMV. See what they tell you.

Iowa used to not generate titles on trailers of that value. The registration was the title and was signed off on by seller upon a sale. In the case of vehicles with titles, Iowa  used to issue titles that became valid after two years if you posted a bond.

So I should be able to just buy it and take the bill of sale to the motor vehicle department and get it worked out in theory.

I would call DMV first and check. To avoid a costly surprise

In BC...to register a homebuilt trailer the rules recently changed...you need bills for key components....axle(s), tires, hitch, metal.....

I just called. No title required for this sized trailer in Iowa and if we can't get a VIN we can register as homebuilt. $20 annually.
