DOT VS European standards
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:50:29 PM »

Looking for info. I love Schuberth helmets but have never been able to fit my head into any full face helmet before. I just lost 100 LBS and my brother in law suggested I try again. To my surprise they will actually work now... I started researching the Schuberth C3 modular (if I do a full face, it has to be a modular where I can flip it up in traffic or very slow speeds) and the only consistant complaints I saw was ventilation and the liner tattooing the forehead and not being made out of the most current materiel. Upon further research, I saw that Schuberth just came out with a C3 Pro with 60% better ventilation and the new "cool max" liner which is removable for washing and reviews say "no more tattooing". Problem is it laterally just came out in Europe and talking to the local BMW dealer, will not be out in the USA until around this time next year. My son is currently in Europe and I had him go find me one and it will arrive tomorrow. My question (yea, took a long time to get here) is what is the difference (or is there) between DOT and whatever it is called in Europe? While researching the helmet,I saw an article from a few years ago when the C3 was coming to the USA that "they had almost completed the DOT testing" and the helmet would be available in a couple of months so I assumed that DOT was just a matter of testing? Am I a idiot???

usually Schuberth helmets are designed as to meet both standards but the approval will only be issued to the final product after some time as indeed test procedures are quite different.

I don't know the legal situation in the US but in Europe a helmet is only legally EC-approved if it has the EC sign already imprinted by the manufacturer so it wouldn't help you over here if the design gets approved after your helmet was produced.

I could be mistaken, but I think Europe uses SNELL certification.  If it will pass SNELL, it will most certainly pass DOT.  But they still have to run their tests.

Regardless of the brand of helmet, the most important thing is does your head shape match the shape of the helmet.  The odds are good that your head is shaped like most heads, but if it's not, no helmet, and particularly a FF or Flip is going fit right, and will create pressure points somewhere, and they can be quiet painful.

IMO, the three best Flip style helmets on the market today are: Schuberth, Shoei, and Nolan.  The Shark Evoline 3 might be another one.

Got it yesterday and it fits perfect and is unbelievably comfortable. Found out that the EC standards are much stricter then DOT so all I am missing is the sticker. Hopefully I will be able to convince the policeman of that also...

No, DOT and Snell are US only.  CE here (A lot stricter, but that doesn't mean the helmets are any different, or better.)

Buy a DOT sticker online (EBay) and slap it on your helmet.  SJ Ron
