Title: Western Trip
Post by: tazmun on March 03, 2011, 04:42:26 PM
Need a little help with planning our western trip this June.
We have a birthday to attend in late June in Sedona, AZ.
When we leave we want to hit the Grand Canyon, the Four
Corners, then stay in Santa Fe for a couple days.
We want to head north and do the Million dollar highway.
Here's where the questions come in. Heading out of Santa Fe
what would be the best route to see the most, heading back
to Wisconsin, and what are some of the "do not miss" things
to see in Colorado? suggestion are greatly appreciated.

out of the Grand Canyon go north up to Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon then east to Mexican Hat then north up to Arches National Park then over to Steamboat Springs then down millon highway to Silverton Durango then over to Sand Dunes National Park then up to the ROyal Gorge then follow the Contintenal Divide up to Rock mountain National Park then then northeat to Devil's tower and the Black Hills, then east to Badlands, then on to wisconsin.

most of this can be done on two lane roads with mimum of interstate.  Will take some time figure about a month.

From the South Rim of the Grand Canyon heading back toward Santa Fe the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert was very interesting.  We had four in our group and everyone seemed to be glad to have taken the time to visit.

Don't expect too much at Four Corners.  You've probably seen photos of the area.  It is just a unique spot where the four states come together (if that is really the spot where the monument is located - apparently some doubt about actual location).  It's just one of those places that I guess you want to be able to say that you've seen.  You'll have to do the four state pose while there (photo below).

Monument Valley is worth a stop.  Mesa Verde is really interesting and it would be on your way from Four Corners over to Durango.

The train ride from Durango to Silverton is great, but the Cumbres-Toltec train might be better.  In the Santa Fe area that ride around the mountain at Taos is really good.  You could ride US Hwy. 64 when you make your way from Durango to Taos.

Your planned stops and rides in Colorado are good.  The suggestions from Screwup above are good too!  You might need another week!

My stop was in September.  It was open complete with all the local vendors and fry bread.
