Wet sumping
« on: April 18, 2020, 07:27:02 PM »

Hi to all  in the US of A
From SA in Africa
I own a 1991 Sportster 1200 that I maintain myself I have a serious problem of wet sumping.
When idling I can see the oil return to tank but if I can't go more than about 2 kys and the sump fill up and drains the tank
I have stripped the pump and it looks ok
What I would like to know is how does the oil get to the pump as the sump is lower than the pump.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you

Am I in the correct group?
I have a technical problem and I thought this was the best place to try and sort it out.
A Harley dealership in SA is useless I asked for gudgeon pin bushes and they said they can't help me but they can give me a number of someone that imports them ??!!
If I am in the wrong place can someone please point me in the right direction.
Thank you

There is a lot of technical chatter here.  But it's not specifically a tech related group.  It's a site for the discussion of CVO bikes.  There's never been a CVO Sportster and there was no CVO bike prior to 1999.  So your question may be beyond the experience of most here.  Of all the bikes I've owned I've never had a Sporty.  Never even worked on one very often as most of my buddies over the years never had one either.  Sorry for the lack of insight.

Is that somewhat similar to a muffler bearing?

If memory serves me 1991 Sportsters have oil tank check valve problem that allows oil to drain into crankcase.

Ding, ding, ding.  I think we have a winner!

Edit:   I rang the bell too soon.  After posting I had second thoughts and checked out the Sporty oil pump and tank. The Big Twin Evo had a check valve in the oil pump body, the Sportster for some reason did not.  The only thing in a Sporty slowing down the oil as it gravity drains into the sump is the pump itself.  If the pump is worn, I assume it doesn't slow the oil down much at all.  On a new bike of that era it would usually take a couple months or more to drain the oil tank into the sump.  Another fine piece of engineering from the MoCo.  They really should have abandoned the entire dry sump design a long time ago.
