What does Your Dealer do Special?
« on: January 29, 2009, 03:34:17 PM »

With all of the news about the economy and Dealerships closing, my friend mentioned we should have another thread about the great ones. So, what does your Dealer do that is special? Does he (or she) close on Wednesday afternoons for a group ice cream ride? Say all...

Hey Spyder,

I did add Schaeffer's to that list when it was going a year or so ago.  But that list was for good service, or sales, or deals, etc.  Still worthwhile, but it might be worth getting a list of dealers that actually ride and participate with their customers.  Schaeffer's is one.  Smaltz's in Eagle PA was another one until Stretch died.  Don't know if there's anyone there now who's riding or not.

Ride Safe

I must admit that each dealer I have purchased a bike from had processed my check faster than I can drink a beer...The know how to process the money honey..

Other than that I really don't think I would piss on the building of any of them if were riding by and saw it on fire...

I only go to the dealer for things I can't get else where, or if I need right away, like maybe gaskets. Twice the price, half the service. :nixweiss:

No, I've not been around the HD market like some of you other people, but I have been involved on both sides of the desk in customer service in an automotive dealership.  I can say without a doubt that my dealership, Doc's HD of Kirkwood MO 314-965-0166 sales Rick Blanner, is one of the best in the area for actual mechanical service work.  As far as purchasing experience, they are rated as the NUMBER ONE in the nation for purchase experience.  Patty Bush owns the dealership and took it over from her brother who had to retire for medical reasons.

Patty has been in customer service all her life and her HD dealership family has the same customer values.  I know its an old cliche, but treat people like you would like to be treated is the number one rule at Doc's.

When my bike had been delayed several times, the sales manager and owner agreed to try and dealer trade to get me riding faster.  This was not by my suggestion, but by their offer.  At that point the '08 SERK Annie's were in high demand.  They traded a frost white and silver '08 SEUC, which was even in higher demand, for my current ride.  That's going out of the way to get and keep a new customer.

Again, I'm going on and on about this place, but I appreciate a great place when I come across one.

No doubt there are other great dealerships around, but I'll go back and I'll recommend them to anyone looking.

They promote the hell out of the Biker's for Babies as well as lots of other non profit organizations.  Like Backstoppers, which is an organization for the families of fallen police and firemen in the greater St. Louis area.  They raise money and have big parties and the money goes to worthy groups.  The Doc's Hog chapter is very well organized and does lots of civic project throughout the year.

Just about every other weekend there's something going on at Doc's.  Don't get me wrong, they do LOTS of self promotion for business with free hotdogs etc just like others, but you do feel good about supporting them as they support you when you need it.

So other than falling all over myself giving my dealership props, that's about all I have to say.

Sorry for the unsolicited plug for Doc's above.

These are the people that got my rear wheel chrome chipping problem taken care and the flaking powder coating on the inner primary.  All this was done with nothing more on my part to point it out to them.  They got HD to cover it and that was that.

LA Harley (Lewiston/Auburn, Me) has an open house party each spring. They have a battle of the bands to choose their Harley band for the year and they will play at fund raisers and at the Harley bar (not the name of the bar, it's just associated with the Harley shop). They also have all different kinds of food and vendors at the open house. Last year they had a drawing for a new Sportster, had some stunt riders putting on a show, an arm wrestling contest, and a bike show (I took second place with my Dyna). Of course they had in-store specials. Lots of bikes, people, and good times.

My dealer does a lot.

They have free concerts most Saturday nights except in the winter, some of them are a ten dollar cover if its a big name group.

They have customer appreciation days were you get 20% off.

They sell at MSRP, and even less.

The owner is very active in the dealer ship, does ride.

The owner is usually at the concerts and partiing with everyone.

Thows a christmas party for prefered customers and provied all the food, and adult beverages.  And opens the store for 25% off.

The staff is friendly and helpfull.  I have become good friends with one salesman, and have know the head mechanic there since long before the dealership opened its doors.

The one around here will give you the 1k service "free". They don't mention the fact that you have to pay way above MSRP to get that.

My dealer specializes in cleaning.  Like cleaning out my bank account! ;D

I specialize in cleaning my bike when I get it back from the dealer.
It was clean when I took it in, dirty when I got it back.
Not to mention that my bike is a little bit faster now, due to better power to weight ratio................less weight in my wallet!

My husband traded his V-rod at Big Moose HD in Portland, ME.-about 2 hours from the house. We went there on a cold, rainy day in the cage, not really knowing if he was gonna trade or not. They delivered the EG to the house and picked up the V-rod. About two weeks later they sent a congrats card with a 25% off coupon for anything in the store. Then at his Bday they sent him a card too. Oh, I got a free shirt out of the deal.

Reading the posts in this thread, I sense a great deal of frustration. I am happy with my dealer and the service and the prices. But this is not what I wish to convey here.

I am convinced that more than in any other business relation, for your dealer relationship the success is based on managing them well. We have a proverb, which translates somewhat into "How you shout into the forest, that is how you will receive the response". It has never hit the nail more on the head, than with Harley dealers. A while ago we had a similar thread and people commented on how the build a relationship with not only the owner or the sales person, but also with the service manager, the guy who actually works on the bike, even the chicks in the clothes department. I think that is crucial. You may say, for my money I should have enough leverage in just being a customer. Well with Harley dealers that does not work in my experience. The Harley dealer is a place where you have to start building a relationship with the people who work with you and on your bike.

Comments please!

Ride safely,
Louis

Liberty Harley on Akron, Ohio, has given me great service. They were fair when I bought my Springer. I get a discount on clothes and accessories. They treat me like family when I walk in. Warranty work has been handled without hassle.  They even clean my bike after service. They gave me a break on the advanced rider course just because it's about safety  Reading the other posts, I feel lucky.

I have bought from many dealers over the years but, Riders H-D in Trussville AL is where I got my 09 SERG. They had my bike in 2 weeks of me placing the order. Made me a great deal on the trade & purchase. Took care of all little issues fast. let me and the MRS have a run through the store @ 25% off. Sent me the plaque, b-day and Xmas card. when I had my 5k mile service they set me & mrs me up in a hotel next door. The salesman SLICK calls me just to shoot the chit. all this and they are 190 miles from me.

My experience has been great with my local dealership. They have customer appreciation days twice a year with 30% off all in stock items, Pig roasts, poker runs, and more. They have become good friends.
When I bought my 09SERG the dealer traded bikes with another dealer to get the one I wanted and then personally drove the 8 hours(One way) to pick up the bike and dropped it off at my house.  A couple of years ago a riding buddy had issues with his bike about 5 hours into his ride and the dealership sent a employee out with a trailer to bring them back. Same thing happened to another rider last summer and the dealer went out of his way to pick him up.

I have always said that people should have to own or manage a business once in their life and I think a lot questions would be answered. In my business , my customers are treated exactly the way that they treat my staff when they come in the door. If you enter with a chip on your shoulder, yelling, b#$ching, cursing, guess what you get crappy service-period. Thank god I don't have to deal with this alot but it happens. We go out of our way to serve customers that are loyal, courteous and dont think the world(and me) owe them something for free because they  bought something from me.

That being said crappy service is crappy service and I won't stand for it either- I would shop elsewhere.
I have been in the service department of my dealer and can't believe some of the knobs who walk in and demand things yesterday, or have wrenched on  their own bike , screwed it up and want it fixed right now. It blows me away.

It doesnt matter to me what kind of store or restaurant I enter, if the service is bad , I won't go back. I dont care how good the product is.

Let the flaming begin :sauer005:

I warn you now, I got started and couldn't shut up... :o  :o  :o

Lewis, I agree with you 120% on this.

A relationship is a bond that works both ways.  I find that my dealer is open with me when I ask questions and I try to be very clear with all my needs or requests.  The service manager and I have built a very good relationship and the salesman and I talk about other things than motorcycles.  We're both gear heads and a little diversion sometimes is nice.  I get e-mails from time to time from my service manager on unrelated topics, so there is an open communication going on.

Patty Bush, the owner, is an avid rider and participates in all the local dealer sponsored activities.  There’s free coffee and donuts on Saturday morning, if you get there early enough.  When they have there customer appreciation day sales, several a year, they send out to customers via e-mail an extra 5% discount to used over and above the 20% off sale.

They have Doc's bucks.  For every $25 you spend they punch one punch on a ten punch card.  Fill up the card and it's good for $25 against ANY purchase in the dealership, labor, parts, clothing etc.

It's very clear from the limited number of responses here that I'm in a very small minority of the CVO owners here.  It's also clear to me that we are a very small minority of HD owners throughout the US.  Obviously if the majority were being treated like those of you complaining about your deals, service or dirty bikes, HD would be out of business in months.  So I have to assume that at least most of the HD dealerships are giving at least OK customer service.

It takes a lot to push my buttons and I think in some cases, not with my HD though, that I've been treated more favorably than others that might try to bully the people, regardless of the type of business it is.  I was service manager for just over 10 years and I have been on the receiving end of lots of complaints.

Indulge me as I share just one more story of my past life.

While I was service manager for a Chevy/Pontiac dealership, the dealerships and GM have ongoing training.  I was to participate in what GM called People to People.  It was a week long class at GMI in Flint.  It took us through difficult situations with customers and how do you handle certain problems.  Basically how to improve your relationship with the customer while handling his ranting and raving about what he feels is a life or death problem.  With my personality, I felt I did great.

So back to the dealership after the class.

It was spring and I had a good customer, an older gentleman, come in and as that we service his Chevette and he wanted a wax job at the same time.  He left the car outside and left to come back the next day, he only lived about a half mile from the dealership.  Being constantly short handed on people, I did the hand wax myself.  The little car looked pretty good.  He came in and paid the bill and left.  He came back and was upset.  He told me that we did not wax his car and he wanted his money back.  Well as I said, I did the wax job myself.  I explained to him as calmly as I could and he just kept going on and on about me lying to him.  Now this was just two weeks after my People to People class.  I had had enough of this guy and took him to the cashier and gave him his money back and told him that I never wanted to see him again.  Sorry about the length of this, but most of you all know me by now.....

Well the next day he came back and went up front.  He got the ear of the general manager.  The general manager came back and talked to me and asked my side of the story; which I quickly to him.  He got the customer and I together and we walked outside to the car.  He asked the customer why he felt that we hadn't done what he wanted.  He showed up scratches on the roof of the little car and said that he wanted the little scratches taken out.  He then said that he wanted us to WAX the car to get rid of them and obviously we didn't wax the car because they were still there.

I very calmly explained to him that waxing and buffing are two different processes and that a light buffing would take care of the little broom and scrapper scratches from the winter snow.  I told him that I had waxed his car personally as that IS what he asked for.

Bottom line is he got a free wax and buffing.

This just shows you that sometimes you think in your head of the problem, but when you relay that information it may not be understood as you think you described it.

From that point on I always went the customer's car and repeated what they were asking us to do.  I do that today when I take anything in for service or repair of any kind.  I always repeat myself and ask them to repeat back to me what they are going to do.  I find this works a lot better.  Even when we have our staff and production meetings, if I've been assigned a task, before I leave I repeat the task as I understand it AND a timeline of when the task completion is expected.  This has cut short lots of extra work because we both understand what it is I'm to do.

Make sure your expectations are known completely.  Even if you've had an issue with getting back a dirty bike, explain that this has happened once before and that you "expect" it to be in at least as clean of condition as when you brought it in, if not washed for you before you pick it up.

Communicate, communicate, communicate....

As for the people here with bad feelings experiences with your dealerships, I feel for you and wish you luck in finding one as great as mine.

My HD dealership exceeds my expectations all the time.  It really is the little things that make you feel good.  I like that very much.

Good luck to all on your quest for a great HD dealership.

My earlier comments about price and service were not directed at just HD dealers, dealers in general, (car & truck). I can usually buy parts at a better price, and usually get the same or better service elswhere. I usually do all my own work within reason, so I hardly ever pay for service. I went into the dealer once when my bike was under warranty and complained about an intermittent noise that they didn't find/hear. Because they didn't hear it, they tried to charge me 1/4 hour labor for test riding the bike. I've hear this from others too! Most dealers now days are car dealers that saw the money to be made with HD over the last 10-12 years and jumped in to get that dollar!

On another note the independent shops I deal with are good to us, one puts a keg out once a month and you can come in a have a beer or two on him. He also has a pig roast every summer, completely free, you get sandwich, beer, colslaw and corn free. He deals out of the major catalogs, so even thought he's a small shop he can get you at least the prices from the major supplies catalogs.

The local dealership has live music, hot dogs and hamburgers, several sales a year, etc.  He rides but I could care less about that.

What matters to me is how I get treated when I do need something and am I getting what ever I need for a fair price.  I realize that dealerships are in business to make money but some make you feel like you just got robbed and they could care less.
