Good Trade?? As the Bar & Shield Turns
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:28:57 AM »

Killing some time waiting on a friend in Wilksboro yeaterday. Stopped in at Crossroards HD and had the usual chicken on a june bug salesman attack. Told him the only thing he might could sell me was a 2013 SERK. He left and came back to say they had a Anni model comming in 2 weeks. Said thanks, but I got a 2009 CUSE. He goes out and looks it over and comes back and says 8K difference out the door?????? Course now he's got the june bug to quit fighting and has my full attention. No chit I say....and he says put a deposit and call my bluff. My friend pulled in and we left. Now I fully realize that we weren't ready to swap titles cause his King was UA. My question is, Was he pulling my crank or no?!?!?! Should I go back Tues and plunk down some $$$ and if I do how binding is our deal with his scoot missing? Probably just dreaming. What would you do????????????????

Have a friend that just did that yesterday. Traded his 07 CUSE for a new Anni SERK. He tells me that the new bike is a much better ride then the 07 he traded. No regrets. So now the parts buying begins again.

All the touring models from 09 and up have a different frame.....yes, it is a "much better ride"! :2vrolijk_21:     But then that's pretty wide spread known. :nixweiss:

2k.....he mentioned $8k and your bike....ask him what the OTD difference will be (tax, license, doc fees, dealer prep, etc.).

Thanks JC & everybody else. I'm going back Tues & see what he will put on paper. I'm gonna tell him I want a binding contract and watch how fast he tries to back-up. We can only hope!!!

I'm not sure why the HD Dealers are dealing as much as they are but I like it. I had a very nice 2008 Ultra with 29K miles. I traded for $14,000 OTD(taxes, freight, lic ,title) including LED Headlight swap for my 13 SERK. They also pickup 1,000 mile checkup 100%. They hit me for 18K difference but then dropped to 14 as I was leaving. That became an easy decision. Plus I only financed 12K and that was 1.9% for up to 72 months! As nice as my 08 was no way could I get $17 plus for it (at least I wouldn't pay that much).

Is it possible the used market is getting stronger again?

Don't forget, you are trading an ultra with all the goodies for a road king that is somewhat stripped down to the bare necessarities for touring, less wind protection, no heated seat or grips, no tp, etc...

Jimmy, King roadglide makes a good point about the stuff the CVO Road King doesn't come with. Three weeks ago I saw a Blue one at Smoky Mountain HD. It looked really good, paint and graphics were really nice, Vickie LOVED it. Sound system sounded nice, salesman was on me there also. The looks of the windshield would take some getting used to. Hard to tell how good the wind protection would be, I did like the idea of the vent for summer riding, but if it is really hot it may not be much help. Worse case you get a new bike my friend.   Arland

The windshield works well if your around 5'8" or less.  The vent is actually to adjust the air stream up and over your head to eliminate buffeting.  Works very well, but at 6'1" it does not for me.  If I duck just a couple inches, and adjust the vent, I am totally out of the wind.  It would be real nice if harley would make the same shield about 3 inches taller.

I am anxious to get mine, early Nov, anniversary color.

KBB showed trade-in of $21K.... the CVO anni road king is $29,999?...

Sure.. the dealer will take yours in on trade.. and mark it up to put out on the floor to resell....

Make your best deal and see what they offer you...

I'd offer $7K Out the door.... (But thats my cheap azz)

I'm just trying to say the trade sounds like a great deal at face value but you should think hard about the comfort levels of each bike. In '07 I traded an e classic for a Rk thinking I wanted more choices for bar hopping and could still tour by changing seats etc.

For me, it was a horrible idea, I spent thousands of dollars to make the RK as comfortable as the Classic and it never did "make the grade". Went back in '11 with a ruse. Whoever said less is more was a dumbazz.

If you really want the new anniversary RK and based on what your '09 is really worth, have you considered purchasing the new RK straight out and then selling your UC?  You might lose a bit on the purchase outright vs. trade in on taxes (Tennessee only requires sales tax on the difference in a trade...not sure about everywhere else) but more than make up for it on a better return on investment for your SEUC.  If it's an affordable option, might be the way to go... :2vrolijk_21:

I'm not sure why the HD Dealers are dealing as much as they are but I like it.

It is because they have a "bucket load" of air cooled engines including the "hot" 110's in inventory to unload this year before the water/oil cooled engines appear in 2014!!!  :D

I couldn't give up an ultra for a road king.  There would be too much I would be giving up.   I can't see doing it. I always liked all the 09s too.   I wouldn't do it.  :nixweiss:    Seems like for 8k you are giving up a lot.  What are you really getting besides a new bike?

Well, Well. 3 days into my 2 week(at least) wait, got a call from X-roads HD and the Anni SERK is in????????? Come up today and make the deal. Sounds fishy to me, I think he saw the look on my face and went out to another dealer and got the scoot for a "Sure Sale" The MoCo might keep alot of secrets from the dealers......but ship dates on inventory can't be on of them. I'm really starting to think twice now :confused5:

Oh Yea, they know the ship dates. Within a few weeks of shipment. They gave me a ship date for my 09 then when it was time to deliver they backed up the date three weeks. Then a Couple days later after my bubble was busted the dealer called and said it's here ( W T F ) anyway, they get dates. Just the MOCO don't aways deliver what's promised.  :nixweiss:

Well the quest is now offically over. Couldn't get it off my mind so I leathered up (49 d) and headed for the mtns. I get up there and as I drinkin the 1st cup of coffee, they are all over my scoot. Piddle around on my 3rd cup as the saleman sits behind his desk looking up now and again to ask BSQ like "Do you still have the stock tailight?" When he hands me a folded piece of paper, which I unfold to reveil $14,563.57 All I can say is "Why the different $$$$" He gives a BSA "well you front fairing has a scratch and the boss won't let us paint a CVO and it will take 8 wks to get a new one" My only answer to him is well thats about $800.00 of it how bout the other $6,000. Of course I said this while walking out the door. Another dream squashed by the MoCo. Would have been a weak trade at best. The SERK had a nice set of speakers(4) but you had to provide your own I-Pod. Wait.......my '09 has AM/FM, Weather, CB, Sirus. MP3, I-Pod and Intercom.......yep thats a trade up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job,,, I'm glad you're sticking with your ultra.   You know it had to be a scam to get you back in there and all excited for a new ride.  Glad you held off.  You have more that that bike would ever have anyway.

They're full of doo-doo.... you know full well they will have someone local touch up the fairing and mark it upupupupupup!

I think the RK would be a nice "in addition to" kind of bike... but never replacing an ultra.

X2 on both of those

X3 on that!

You may or may not hear from him, but you'll enjoy your Ultra a lot more knowing what you would have had to give up on the RK.  I'd love have one, but not ready to give up the extra toys the Ultra offers.

Great job sticking to your guns on the $$.  This is the game they play.  Now, if they come in with a new Anniversary Ultra and make a good offer; time to reevaluate...8)

Unless you add a removable fairing with a powerful sound system,  a RK is just a motorcycle. The fairing with all it's goodies and added protection makes the bike what it needs to be. My first bike was a RK.   I was sorry I bought it from day one. I wanted a radio.  Never looked back.  :2vrolijk_21:

The salesman had no intent to honor the original offer....he was going to find someway out.  His technique says a lot about that dealer.

:2vrolijk_21:   Exactly.  The classic low ball technique made famous a long time ago by unscrupulous car salesmen.  When a customer is just looking but seems like he may be a potential sale, shoot him a much lower than realistic price.  If he goes out and shops around elsewhere, no one will meet or beat that low ball price so the customer will come back to the original salesman.  Of course something has changed and now the salesman can't give him the earlier verbal price (note that this technique is based on verbal BS and not an enforceable written sales agreement signed by an authorized manager or the dealer).  If someone tried running that old scam on me I'd tell him to kiss my azz and then go find the dealer and let him know I don't do business with places that hire such unscrupulous clowns.

I tell them to put in writing and give me a buyers order... right there and then... catch them off guard. Then when they say well we didnt know this, that, blah blah blah... wave the document in front of them. Its a legal and binding agreement (at least it is here).

Excuses are like ___holes...

You have an '09, so you already have the newer frame, so you would gain nothing there.  The SEUC has a fairing; the RK has a windshield.  Your SEUC has a tourpack; RK has zippo.  You are also giving up a lot of audio features plus a lot less wind noise covering up the sound.   Heated grips, heated seat, power locks... I just traded my '09 SEUC for a '12 SEUC and I was given $25,000 for the '09 and $2000 discount on the new bike.  I don't know how many miles you have on yours, but I had 48,000 miles on mine.  Admittedly, mine had a lot of goodies that I left on it and I didn't have a scratch on my fairing, and it was kept in fantastic condition.  For my situation, that's a $6000 difference and if the dealer would have made me the offer of $6000 and my bike for the '13 RK Anniversary, I wouldn't have even given it a serious thought.  It's a beautiful bike and all, but I started with a RK and moved up to the SEUC because I wanted all of the creature comforts and storage, and all of the extras that come with the SEUC.  It does sound like a good trade for the dealer.  If you really want the RK, sell your bike outright and then you know exactly what kind of deal you are getting on the RK.  I don't know how bad the scratch is on your fairing, but it's absolutely amazing what some people can do with a buffer and some wet sandpaper.
