Completed Conversion
« on: January 13, 2013, 01:27:18 PM »

I have completed the conversion, and am so happy with the end result.  When I first bought the FLHXSE, I was happy with the bike.  Over the past few years though, the RGC really grew on me.  I couldn't leave well enough alone, and I'm happy I made a conversion instead of trading her in.

My conversion began October 27, 2012, and working at a leisurely pace, I completed the bike yesterday, January 12, 2013.

So, here it is - a 2010 Tequila Sunrise FLTRXSE!

It feels good to be a full-fledged Tanker!  :)

Thanks guys.  This one was a lot of fun.

I started out by working with Gunslinger, but decided last minute to use a local painter who does work for the local dealership.  I know him thru a friend too.  It was cool to be involved in the flame design in that he brought me in several times to check out the design, and give it the thumbs up.

The flames are perfect, yet look stock.  Hell, he nailed the front fender too, with perfectly symmetrical flames.  All done by laying out the pin-striping tape by hand to match the texture and line edges on the rest of the bike, and shooting the color of the flames, which he had to custom mix...

Thank you all for the compliments.  They're appreciated!

Thanks Joe.  At this point, looking back, it wasn't a very difficult project.  I started out with a parts manual for a 2012 FLTRXSE, and began compiling a list of parts in a spreadsheet, down to specific bolts, plugs, wiring clips, fairings, etc. and then compared it with online parts fiches for the SG parts.  Some were able to transfer over, but not all.  My goal the entire time was to make it look as though MOCO made the bike.  It looks stock, but for those who are enthusiasts, they'll recognize the difference.

After that, it's just a matter of removing the batwing and the fairing brackets, and rebuilding from the neck up into a RG.  Since they share the same frame, everything bolts on pretty easily.  I did have to change out the lower ABS brake line, and since I went to taller bars from the 14" PYO bars, I had to add an upper brake line and new clutch cable to the mix.

The RG uses a different wiring harness in the fairing, in that certain sections are longer or shorter, etc, suited to the different style fairing.  All the connectors are the same, so it's a simple plug and play.

As for cost, I was able to sell much of my take off stuff, but I did keep the painted parts.  After running thru the numbers, including paint, I am into this for about $3500.  There is no way I could have come out ahead by trading.  Plus, I love the color on this bike, and after a couple years riding, it's my bike - I just didn't want to start over.

If you're really interested, I can send you the parts list.  Just shoot me a PM.

I have never seen that done before.  :o. But I've got to say that it looks really GREAT  :)

Some of the guys on the regular HD forum have done this.  But, you're right, it's not very common, especially on a CVO bike.

A friend of mine did a similar conversion but changed colors. Similar result in that if you know from where you came to the finished product it's pretty impressive.

Thanks Tom.  IMHO, the paint is a perfect match.  I was nervous about that beginning this project, as anal retentive as I am, but my painter was a pleasure to work with and has high standards for himself as well.  It was a good fit.

Fish, ya done good.  Paint, build quality and you got to keep your SG (oops, sorry) RG.  By the way, how will you register it now with the DMV as the VIN will say SG but the bike says RG?  Just one of those things that popped into my head while looking at the wonderful job.  Also, don't forget to change/update your avatar.... :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks again everyone!

What's the other project you have off to the side in the first pic?

That was the Street Glide the some of my take offs went to.  The owner is a good friend and ended up buying my old bars, and several other parts.  At that time, we had his bike stripped down so he could have his inner fairing painted.

The DMV in Colorado only notes the make and VIN, if I recall - the last thing I would try to do is convince some DMV clerk that it's a different bike because of the conversion!  Plus, as long as to took me to figure out which Harley was which when I first started riding HDs, I don't see much hassle in my future.

Need to get on that avatar - thanks for the reminder!!

As an RGC (2011) owner, I find the rebuild to look "normal" as U,(OP) were shooting for. I would find it to be changed to suit tastes of OP as well. Love the Paint, just different enough that no one else will have one that looks the same, even at Sturgis... Wanna swap for a month??

Nicely done! I've seen some other bat-shark conversions, but not a CVO. Your painter really nailed it.

The only bike I regret getting rid of was my '07 Patriot (military) edition Street Glide. I sold it to get a Sharknose - batwing bars are too wide for my t-rex arms - but the Patriot bikes are very rare and were only done one year. If I'd known then how relatively easy and relatively inexpensive the conversion is, I would have done that instead.

Re: registration/title: it's still a Street Glide, because that's what the VIN says. Just a SG with a different fairing.

I just ran accross this post and my hat is off to you; #1 for attempting to do this job on your own, and #2 for getting it right, and by that I mean it looks just as if mother MOCO had done the work in-house.  Matching the factory paint and graphics like you did is more difficult that doing a complete custom paint job. Congratulations on a job well done!!

Being partial to the RG styling, I think it was a great choice and the color combination looks awesome as a RG.

I hope I didn't miss a post in this thread about this, but I believe someone with an '09 SERG Silver did the same conversion, ONLY, he went from RG to SG.

Too bad you couldn't find a guy with an RG wanting to go SG.  I appreciate all the detailed work that went into your guide for this project.

Again, a great looking bike!

I think I remember that bike...it was for sale...with all the part to go either RG or Bat Wing.

Thanks again gang!

Thank you!  I appreciate the compliments.  It's fun because it's custom, but looks factory.  Even more fun has been being able to ride lately.  Colorado is sure enjoying some nice temps lately.

Again, a great looking bike!

So, I still venture into the garage, just to take a look at the bike.  I am surprised by how well it came out, and humbled at the same time.  The color and graphics lend themselves perfectly for this application, IMHO.

It's not often you see RGs with flames in the paint.  I know Moco offers some tin sets with the flames, but it's still not common...

Thank you again for the kind words.

Thanks!

The fender is a Klockwerks Hugger Series.  The model is the Slicer.  Quality is great, and it was easy for my painter to work with.

Don't forget, you'll need to purchase the Klockwerks spacers too, since the fender tabs are narrower than stock/fork.
