Hey all, I'm looking at buying either a 2007 CVO softail springer or a (non-CVO) 2003-2005 softail springer.
Reliability and tank range matter most to me. I have a few questions:
Will the 110+6speed get better or worse tank range than the 88+5speed?
How much is realistic range out of either?
I'm a little spooked by the various threads about 110" reliability. For a 2007 CVO 110" bike with 10k-ish miles, is it likely to have exhibited problems already, or not enough mileage to show them? Or is it just a crapshoot.
If it's a crapshoot, how much money would it cost to make the 110" reliable?
I like the fully chromed forks of the regular springer better, but the blue CVO springer is nice.
Any advice?

If reliability is the issue I'd stay away from the 07 & 08 SE 110's I remember there being massive problems with the motor those 1st years of production a Google search of 2007 Screaming Eagle 110 motors should help you

I Have a Blue Cvo 07 Springer. I ride it, short and long distance, well over 70,000 km on the clock now.
No issues since the Product Improvement was done. Gas range depending on how i ride it, up to 330km.
Serviced every spring time, always with new engine oil, which needs topping up periodically during the year.

ice6900, sounds like tank range is about on par with the twin cam 88. What's the worst you've gotten?

I tend not to run empty very often, I ride with a variety of other Harleys from the club, Twin Cam, Evo, Shovel & Pan
so most fill ups are at about 200km.

I have a 2008 with ~15,000 miles and I have never had any problem at all with the bike. Normal around town ridding my range is 175 miles, 6th gear freeway cruising 75-80 mph = 225 miles stretching it

I have a 2008, no problems in around 40,000 miles except for a O2 sensor. It is my understanding that most of the Engine problems were on the early 2007 models, I get around 35 -39 miles per gallon, most times I am two up on long trips and fairly heavy handed when I'm buy myself.
I have owned several Harley s including a 88 cubic inch or two, I can tell you that I highly recommend the extra power of the CVO especially if you travel two up.
My only complaint would be that the stock Harley grips and pegs it weather damaged (by the Sun) fairly quickly in my opinion.
I think you will also find that the CVO will hold its value better as well.

I have an '07. The flywheels shifted on me at about 4000 miles. I caught it before it did much damage. I could have just replaced the crank, but I used the opportunity to upgrade a bit. I kept it looking 100% stock with all the stock badging but with the obvious addition of Bassanni Pro-Streets. She is now sporting a 124" motor. I did all the labor and so the total cost of the upgrade was in the $6500 range. I'm still taking it easy until I get a real tune, but it is an incredible upgrade from a stock 110. I had toyed with the idea of selling the bike at one time, not now, this baby is a keeper.
As to different versions of the CVO Springer.....I'd have loved to have a version built with the 240 rear of the '09, but with the 21" FX front end. If you like the 21" front end then you are stuck with the 2007 model.
Your original post of looking at an '07 CVO or a standard 2003-2005 springer is a no brainier. Go with the CVO. You will be much happier.
