while its sad that there were any deaths, i think most are do to a combination of alcohol and testosterone, helmets will never overcome that

Sad to state, however we have some local folks that were affected by these events.  They are related to some friends of ours.

Husband dead...Wife is critical condition...They do not drink alcohol...

The woman who hit them, in the senior years of her life.

Short article on Bike Week fatalities.  Sad but true:

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060313/NEWS01/603130325

The article talks about the nice weather--true.  I didn't go to Daytona but there were so many riders out down here that it almost felt like I was at a rally.

yeah, but I was almost run over by two sheriff cars responding to a call.  no excuse in that either.  The biggest problem is the mixture of too many cars w/ the bikes and throw in the alcohol..... [smiley=drink.gif]....volia!  instant blood-letting.  :'(  spyder

I agree with BigDaddy.  Living down here in the midst of millions of elderly drivers, well, I thought I had seen bad driving before.  Drive around with me for a day and you'll become an advocate for mandatory driver re-testing.  If it weren't for my proximity to the relative safety of the backroads west of the ocean, I might have sold my bike.

The mandatory annual re-test beginning at some advanced age (65, 70 maybe) is a really good idea.

Here is another page, saying the same thing !!   18 killed.
It was my first bike event,,  and my son and I both enjoyed
the experience,, and we will probabaly go again.  I did see a
few times,, cars just change lanes without looking.  That is
what I told my son he had to watch out for.  I figured being
down there in a retirement area,,  you have to be much more
alert on what is going on around you.

Gotta tell ya, I was dissapointed with some bikers.  I noticed quite a few people dropping the hammer in the wrong places.  Twistin' the wick for all it's worth on A1A with everyone pulling out of hotels and making u-turns in the middle of the road is not a smart thing.  I think DBPD did a great job from what I saw.  They only stopped the people doing retarded chit, like driving your bike down a side walk at 20 mph because traffic was jammed!  I believe legislation is coming very soon down the road for driving tests after a certain age.  I know someday I will be in the same situation so hopefully more public transportation will be available...
