Former Fullsac fabricator and close personal friend of mine, "Dangerous" Dale Grusell lived up to his reputation on July 4th. In a moment of impatience,
he tragically killed himself and put two others in the hospital making a high speed pass on a line of cars on his FZR 1000. I've known Dale for over 16 years,
helped him recover crashed airplanes, quads and picked him up from the hospital after his last MC crash in Idaho after he completed a pass on a line of
cars and over ran the next turn. Dale was a Marine and a Vietnam Vet who took chit from no one. Some of my most memorable rides were with this man.
The phone call this morning from his brother brought no surprise. I'm going to miss Dale. I feel really bad for the people he hurt. I wish them a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Steve.  He sounds like a really memorable character,  the kind that leaves an impression wherever he went (no pun intended).  Not a very quick learner, though, judging from the number of crashes he'd survived.  I hope the others involved have a quick recovery, and the family finds comfort in the good memories.

He was an intelligent man. Awesome machinist. Had a problem with Adrenalin.  Thanks.

Sounds pretty selfish to me. Innocent people end up in the hospital because this guy has an adrenalin problem?   Not very fair.  Could have been someone I care for.  Or it's people that others care for.  Sad he couldn't just do this by himself. Life isn't very fair most of the time.  :nixweiss:

You've never done anything that endangered other people?  Don't see how you can call this selfish, just bad judgement!

Tom.  Are you kidding me.  No.  I don't drive like some crazy person for the thrill of it.  Period.  Yes there are others to think about.  Plus I enjoy living. That to me is just pure selfishness.  We have to pay for his craziness.  No.  I don't agree this time.

Steve,

Sorry for your loss and that of Dale's family and friends.  His final act was both selfish and bad judgment but not exclusive.  We have all made mistakes.  This one, apparently after many bad decisions,  caught up with him.  I'm glad he did not do more damage to others.  I am more sorry for the innocents.

That's true.  I'm just so tired of hearing about thing like this that could have been avoided. It's the innocent people I feel bad for. He could could have wrapped himself around a tree by himself if that's what he wanted to do. No matter what, I can't just say I'm sorry when I hear a story like this.  >:( :(

Steve:

Sorry for the loss of your friend.  I know some brother and sister vets who live on the edge and have to get an adrenaline fix every now and then.  I do too, but chose my sites very carefully. Some others may think I'm a little too cautious, but when I can't see around a curve and don't know what's coming or in the road; I'm very circumspect going at a high rate of speed.  I take nothing for granted and believe what my eyes tell me, not what I believe to be true.  Taking things on that kind of faith is what gets people killed.  Just like it did Dale.  When I can see, that's another story.

But, I'm with the others on the common sense that need be applied when we take these wonderful machines out on the road.  I'm also sad for the folks who were hurt.  Prayers for Dale's soul.

RIP brother.

Sorry for you loss Steve.   I will be the first to admit, I make bad decisions....   Sad your friend's decision turned out the way it did.   I have friends who are "characters" in themselves, and while it wouldn't be a shock, I would still miss them dearly.   Sorry man.

Steve,

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, and I feel for his family and friends.

I'm also sorry for others on here that make remarks at times like this about being selfish, slow learner, etc.  All of us make bad decisions at one time or another, none of us are perfect.  Even tho' Dale may have made a bad decision that cost him dearly, I feel we could keep our opinions/judgements to ourselves when others are hurting.  No use rubbing salt in the wound.  Pain is pain, whether it was an accident or a bad choice.

I wish for healing and comfort for Dale's friends and family during this time.

Steve, I passed this scene just as the ambulances were leaving.  I am sad to hear of the loss of your friend.  I will say that I'm not completely shocked considering the condition of the silver motorcycle.

If you would like, you may contact me personally if you wish.  I don't have much in the way of details, but I offer any I can.

The loss of anyone's friend or loved one under any circumstance is tragic and painful to those that knew and loved him no matter how anyone else sees it. I hope he had accepted Jesus as his Savior sometime in his life. My sympathy to his friends and family. My prayers to those that were injured. Remember guys, we all have an appointed time to depart from this world.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies, I truly appreciate it.
In making this post, I certainly didn't expect any sympathy's for Dale or excuses for his lack of judgment.
I made this post in anger of my friends death from his poor riding habits after warning him countless times to lay back and relax when passing slower traffic.
The point is, I was really wanting to share a story of consequences. The reality of how fast our fun day of riding can change in to a tragedy in the blink of an eye.
Cammy and I just returned home a 1500 mile 3 day rain filled ride through Colorado's Million dollar highway. We left just 48 hours after my friends death.
Like Dale, I ride with a high degree of self confidence. 43 years of riding with out a major injury or incident will do that to you. I rarely think of something tragic
happening to us while we ride miles from home. I can honestly say, this trip was a little different for both of us. I layed back behind traffic even when I had
plenty of room to pass. I was really patient in setting up to pass when I did. Bad things can happen when you least expect it. Life is to short already.

Please everyone, ride safely.

Steve,,, glad to see you still were able to make your trip. I was kind of hard on that guy.  Just me thinking outloud.  Please post up some more pics if you have.   Would love to see you both with smiles on your faces somehow.  plus that scenery isn't hard to look at either.  :2vrolijk_21:

Believe me, no body was harder on Dale than I was. I always expected to witness his final moment and have to make the calls myself. Although he never owned a Harley, he was
all biker with more than a dozen 1000 mile days under his belt. Had 150K on his last Goldwing before he turned it into a pile of broken plastic. Had he owned a Harley, maybe it would have saved
his life by encouraging a calmer riding style. Maybe not. Lol.   RIP Dale

Steve

Tom.  Are you kidding me.  No.  I don't drive like some crazy person for the thrill of it.  Period.  Yes there are others to think about.  Plus I enjoy living. That to me is just pure selfishness.  We have to pay for his craziness.  No.  I don't agree this time.
so thats why you have the biggest motor Harley puts in a bike huh..    cause you never break the law.

I understand your post, but just because someone has the biggest engine Harley puts in a bike, doesn't mean they are a speed demon. I bet there are plenty here that ride within the law most of the time.

Stu - I completely understand where you were coming from, but I am sure Dale wasn't out to put anyone in harms way that or any other day.

For him to live wild and free and make it to 65 sounds like success to me.

R.I.P. Dale.

My condolences to you Steve and your points are well taken. Our choices always seem to catch up with us, one way or another.

After reading the article, I feel badly for the 2 people sent to the local "hospital" in Lewiston. I know way to many people that went in for something relatively minor and either didn't come out of that place at all or came out quite disfigured. But, that is another topic.
