This is the turnoff from Banff to Calgary
Great picture! They had to build the animals (especially the elk) their own crossing, because that was where the natural crossing was and after the highway was built, there were far too many accidents.
I understand it didn't take the animals long to learn that this was their "road."

First there was the land, and then the animals that followed the land, and then man followed the animal paths, and then we built roads where the paths were and then we started smashing the he__ out of the animals which were following the paths that their ancestors created. I applaud the highway dept. for building that bridge and wish we'd build more of them. The deer slaughter and resulting injuries and damage in Ohio is out of hand. :soapbox: Neat pic.

Hey, you can't hide from a good hunter. And it isn't nice to call a guy a poacher, especially a guy with guns.......that's like callin a guy a horse thief :rifle:

S....from my experience in the Canadian Park System, they have a really different attitude. I also applaud their efforts to preserve both the animals and their natural travel patterns. They do the same kind of thing with the Grizzly bears up there....the last time I was up in the Lake Louise (Valley of the Ten Peaks) area, I wanted to take some friends on a hike I'd done before because it is one of the more awesome sights I've ever seen in my life, but there was a 2 year old bear who had been false charging from time to time. Instead of shooting the bear...they close the trail indefinitely, until the bear either moves on, or becomes less threatened by human contact, and food sources become more available. When you're in the park system up there, and you choose to go in the backcountry, you ain't the top of the food chain any more...
I wonder if the sheep use that bridge too? I saw a lot of them, especially the females, down in the lower elevations. Seems the males stayed up in the passes.

Neat photo, it sure looks like the animals figured the bridge out. The powers that be are thinking along the same lines in Washington on I-90 when and if they make improvements at Snoqualmie Pass. As I recall the news articles they're thinking of tunnels under the Interstate. Good for people too. I remember a year or two ago a driver hit an elk east of Easton, lost control, and went off an overpass with several fatalities.

that is great...... last year while delivering a job to Houston TX, I counted 78 dead deer on interstate 10 between Ft Stockton and San Antonio , Could definitely cause a big hurt if one ran out in front of a bike..... guess thats why there is that cardinal rule ........ never ride at night through the panhandle of TEX!!!! :2vrolijk_21:

I is actually residual left from the snow melt. They got into some of the bales of hat that were used to wrap the trees in lieu of straw last fall. The builder learned it wasn't such a good idea after a 2 foot snowfall. The elk knew where to find some eats. They tore the hell out of the bales and had eaten it all in less than a few days.

Really was funny but the builder ultimately one since the elk trampled and compacted the snow for them. The bales in the picture that are untouched are the straw ones.

Probably would make for some good fertilizer in the garden. Its FREE! FREE is GOOD!

Don't have any stats but from the looks i would think it lowered them in these crossing situations for sure.

They actually tried the tunnels up here before the bridges. The predators figured it was a good spot for a meal! After that their scent was all over & the other animals wouldn't use it.

Funny thing about animals, they seem to get things figured out quickly.
