2013 Primary
« on: January 11, 2014, 05:40:43 PM »

Changed the oil in primary and found the oil to be silver from shavings. FLHTCUSE8 has only 9026 miles on it,this the third oil change. Will  HD pick it up and check it out or tell me to add new oil and run it till it falls apart?

Odds are pretty good you have excessive wear from the compensator creating those metal particles (I assume they are metal).  As for your dealer picking it up and opening up the primary to investigate, that will depend on what kind of dealer you have.  Some will blow you off, the good ones will check it out.  And then some will tell you that they will open it up and take a look but if they don't find anything wrong you'll have to pay since Harley won't pay them for fishing expeditions.  In other words, none of us can answer the question you asked and you will need to call the dealership and ask them.

That just means I have to take the cover off and inspect it first.

After taking off the outer primary cover, the only thing I noticed was a little wear on the starter drive. From what I could see the compensator to me looked OK. Called my dealer they said add the new oil and check next oil change. Although I did read on this site that the NEW compenstors did shed metal.  I would suggest changing the primary when we change the engine oil to everyone.

Many of us change the primary oil every oil change (5,000 miles) because of the metal from the compensator wear as you suggested.  It is cheap and easy to do..  The metal floating around can't be good for the primary as you are aware.    :2vrolijk_21:
