Title: Who to paint?
Post by: TraumaSlave on March 29, 2020, 01:40:01 PM
So, I put my bike in the trailer last night after a wonderful day of riding. Set in my condor, closer the door and went fishing. Go out this more to find it on it's side. Fairing and saddle bag paint scuffed bad and gas had leaked all down the tank ruining the paint. My 05 Cherry looks rotted. Now I need either someone to fix (repaint) the paint. Who should I get?  Figure it's not something my local body shop will be able to do.

I would assume this would be an insurance claim? If so let them look at it first. Most  Insurance companies will not repair and paint a Harley due to costs etc it and will replace with pre-painted new parts. Due to age you have a problem there but either way let insurance inspect it and if you have a repair facility let the adjustor know and he/she will work with them. Makes a easier more seamless deal that way.
When that was my job I always liked it when the owner already knew who he wanted to do the repairs. Two things, One I had not been part of the decision process and if they did a crappy job it was between the owner and shop and two the shops are more used to dealing with insurance company and my involvement was minimal.
Choose a GOOD shop or let the insurance company offer suggestions, remember if they make suggestions they have some liability in quality of repairs.

Dude ,   I feel for ya brother.   Please share if you can what went wrong with the condor.   I just purchased a condor myself recently and now you made me afraid to use it.

Thanks.
Dave

No clue what happened with the Condor. It has been Rock solid and I can't lend blame to it. We had bad storms last night and I'm sure the wind rocked the trailer but, that shouldn't have been the cause.

Well, "trust" your insurance company and the Stealership, right? I just dropped it off at Chattanooga Harley. They said they "may" be able to get replacements from Harley. I told em good luck with that. I just figure if a just took it to a body shop, they have to figure out how to take it apart, put it back,,, maybe match paint maybe not. That and it's gunna cost me the same whoever does it.

I wouldn’t want a traditional body shop doing anything if they don’t routinely paint bikes.  I’d rather ship my parts to a custom painter than to trust an unproven local.

I am so sorry to hear As you have a great bike Brian .  As others have stated joe at extreme is great.
Or look for a take off set.  If insurance is paying you may still be able to get new painted parts from Harley.  Good luck.   :cherry:

Check out what is on eBay that smokymtnboy posted.

Estimate for replacing parts came in @ $15,704. Not a snowballs chance of that happening. They will total it and I will loose a fresh built motor. Have to wait to see what the paint job will come up to.

The Paint Shop in London, KY. Craig Smith. The guy is an amazing painter known all over the custom bike industry. I am a former customer of Xtreme Dimension and live near NJ. You’ll wait at least 4-5 months with them doing the repair...

Second recommendation is Chad Hampton in Gastonia, NC. Probably one of the top 3 bike painters in the country right now.

I live in KY and always used joe @ Xtreme Dimension in NJ for my CVO paint.  Agree that his turnaround time can be lengthy due to high demand.

I’ve seen Craig Smith’s handy work up close on bikes at Wildcat H-D and around the state of KY.  He also does some high quality custom work.  He recently turned around a new non-CVO fender for a brother in a week for a reasonable $275.

X2

I used CPV on both bikes to match the front fenders for my fat tire set ups. They do fantastic work and were very fast. Cindy is very knowledgeable and great to work with.

Well, after raising Caine with my insurance agent over the delays, the have finally given the go ahead. The adjuster never laid eyes I never the bike and was bickering of a handful of service hours. Final price came in @ $4600. I'm on the hook for $500 deductible. Got an update today to find out the the painter is Kenny Reynolds. I have seen some of his bikes and, wow. Hope I get the same quality.

Her we are, just about 4 was out. Haven't heard anything so, i called my contact @ the dealership. He tells me he hopse it should be done next week. Then proceeds to tell me the painter said he can't do anything with the fuel tank insert. Said he might be able to get one from Michigan but, since its an obsolete part, he's not sure. Then he tells me today is his last day there. I'd really hate to have to loose my cool over lack of communication,  incomplete work, extended waiting time, promises not met,,,, somebody help them if I'm not satisfied with the work. My crystal ball shows a not so pleasant conversation with the service manager. Do I sound unreasonable?
