Dash Lights
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:12:06 PM »

Is it safe to assume I need to remove the fairing to get inside to change an instrument light (voltmeter)? Also would anyone by chance have the part # for the bulb.

Thanks

Yes , it's really not that hard. have you ever taken a fairing off before? remember to leave the center top screw part way in until you take all other screws out. Just a tip  :2vrolijk_21:

As long as you're going to replace one, replace all of them with LED.  I just did that and it is well worth it.  The gauges are much brighter and I no longer have to squint to see them.  They are about the same intensity as the tachometer and speedometer now.  Chances are you'll never have to replace them again.  Just my two pennies worth!

I did have one go bad on me last week.. Had some spares and replaced it in no time at all.  That fairing comes off fast these days once you get the hang of it and a magnetic driver. ;)

Another 2 pennies here. Cover your passing / auxiliary lights with a pair of socks when pulling the outer fairing off. Pull them right over the lights, they can't fall off like a rag could. This could save expensive paint repairs and gives the fairing something soft to rest against while you're unplugging and plugging in the headlight.

After viewing the post, decided to add:  When you access the site, do a search for WLEDx5 and it will open another page with pictures and specs.  The bulbs appear to be white, but illuminate as red.  Also available in other colors if you're so inclined.

Could someone that has replaced their gauges with LED's could you please take pictures of the dash light at night for us / me.
I am thinking of doing this but I think that the Superbrite WLED-RHP5 might be too bright, but I like the ideal of being able to
see the gauges. I just don't want it to be distracting at night,,

so just wondering of which one to order, the  WLED -x5  or the   WLED -RHP5.

the wled-5rhp are not "too" bright at all... they really match up better to the speedo and the tack better than the others,,,,, not distracting at all..

You can see that the LED's will draw less power (Amps) than the stock blubs and as you can see the LED's give off LIGHT.

What I used   WLED-RHP5 stats on the top and the stock blub stats are on the bottom.

I believe these are sealed units and bulb replacement isn't possible.

That would be correct....

As far as I could see the units were sealed and just the connector to the unit would come off.
No external light to replace like in the gauges.

Ok I see that it looks like there are two different bulbs listed here:

WLED-RHP5

WLED-X5

Is there a difference?   Anyone used a different color other than red?  Just wondering if the gauges its self is red...and if you changed colors was it the color your chose or was it a combination color...

Thanks,

Ok I see that it looks like there are two different bulbs listed here:

WLED-RHP5

WLED-X5

Is there a difference?   Anyone used a different color other than red?  Just wondering if the gauges its self is red...and if you changed colors was it the color your chose or was it a combination color...

Thanks,

Topper

Good question   I would like to know th answer to that too

The WLED-RHP5 is brighter (?) then the WLED-x5. I have the x5 and its just right for me. Any brighter and it would be annoying at nite. And would be brighter then the speedo and tack.

wled-rhp5 are the ones to get,,  they match perfectly and make a huge difference with the smaller gauges.     the speedo and tach  bulbs do not need to be changed out.  I promise you guys will all love 'em.

Hey there Topper,

Glad they worked out for you.  I was and am very satisfied with mine.  According to the website they are offered in several different colors.  But any color other than red will not match the speedometer and tachometer.  Of course if you were really patriotic you could run red, white & blue ;D

The stock bulbs that you replace are a clear bulb with a red condom over it making the light red in color..
So if you put in the BLUE led's the out come would be BLUE.   However the Speedo and Tach are RED and you can't change them or at least
I could not see how to change them as they are sealed units.  NOT END USER FRINDLY.
I guess you could
                                WHITE       RED   RED       BLUE
                                   WHITE                      BLUE       :2vrolijk_21:

So basically I would order the bulb as a clear no tint bulb and place the red condom back over the bulb or should I just order the bulb in red?

The red condom will not fit the LED bulb, it is entirely different.  Take a look at the picture of the bulb on their website.  Buy the red bulbs!  Also with my big paws I had a little trouble reaching in to grab the bulb.  What I wound up using was a pair of forceps, but a pair of needlenose pliers would work fine as well.  One other tip, before you plug the replacement bulb back into the dash, turn your key on to see if it illuminates.  You never know when you'll get a bad one.  I did this for each bulb.  Get'em, you won't be sorry!

I know I have a SESG, but I thought things would be the same in the gauge light department as all of you guys, but I just took a pic in the garage with no lights on and no flash and it seems that mine look as bright when stock as the pics I have seen here after the bulb replacement. Maybe something changed on the 09/10's?

The 4 small gauges are back lit like the speedo and tach.

If the speed/tach are sealed units there is a vendor who can change the color.  Bluegauges.com did my VROD gauges 5years ago.  They crack open the cases, install the new LED's and then reseal them.  Changed my stock red gauges to a great looking blue.  I got great service and have had absolutely no problems since installed.  Check out their website...FAQs will answer most questions.

I swapped out my bulbs for the LEDs right after I got my bike for just that reason. Fogging gauges. And it stopped it! Until recently when we got stuck in an all day rain storm comming back from Sturgis. Now the gas gauge fogs up in the cool mornings again. Been meaning to take the fairing off to seee if the bulb came loose or something. But for the last few years I haven't had any fogging at all.

These LED's look like a marvelous idea.

Just wondering if anyone with a '05 Teal SEEG has replaced the bulbs with green LED's?

If you could change out the speedo and tach to green, it might look really cool???  :nixweiss:

If someone has done this, please post a picture.  Thanks!

Speedo and tach aren't separately replaced bulbs.  Illumination sealed within the instruments.  Green and red lights on your dash?  Yuck :puke: :huepfenlol2: !

Indeed they were. I'm telling ya, my arms and shoulders were sore for a day or two.

After I split up with Kathy & Brian I took some back roads off of Skyline drive towards DC. I found a couple of country roads that were relatively straight - but they mad up for with the ups and downs - whoo hoo  :orange:

Anyone add these to a 2010?  I saw someone said the 2010's are brighter then earlier years but mine seem alittle on the dim side.

i have heard that the 10's have brighter gauges all around. I replaced the 4 smaller gauges with the Superbrites wled-rh5 bulbs and they match perfectly with the speedo and the tach. And the are also very bright and the gauges are really easy to read.  You will love 'em.

Just changed out stock bulbs with the LED's referenced here and they came out great!  I bought five just in case one went bad and sure enough, I needed the spare, so if your ordering throw in an extra one or two as spares.

Being light disbursement is greater, even though led, does that mean more frequent replacement?

Not sure there is any relationship between one and the other.  My dash lights are five years old and I can't see any reason why the LED's would not last just as long in this application.  Only time will tell, the results are worth it and the expense is minimal.

Had the same problem finding them.  You need to scroll down the selections to the WLED-__HP5.  There is a drop down menu where you will see the "R" designation which refers to the color of the LED.  Click on the RHP5 and you got it.  The bulbs are $5.95 each, order 5 minimum.

how long have the led's been in place before the replacement was neede ? No doubt the greater back lighting is a huge improvement from the oem wedge bulb.

Just installed them today, the one that went bad, apparently was bad out of the box, never worked.  I was able to fix it later by adjusting the prongs on the bulb where it plugs into the socket

I put the Wled-rh5 bulbs in my 09 & 10 CVO UCs late last summer and at first I didn't like them. They were much brighter than the speedo & tach but now I'm used to them. I like them despite all my night riding. One thing I learned: If you put them in with wrong polarity they don't work. Flip them upside down and it fixes the problem.

I was hearing that they 'matched' the brightness of the Speedo/Tach.  Sorry to read this after I just pulled the trigger and order 2 sets.  :(   aaaargh.  spyder

Don't worry yet Spyder.  The 09 bikes look different than ours when I've seen them side by side at night lit up.  You might be just fine (or mine might be showing a time induced variation ::) ).

Spyder,

Don't worry they match, it's just that you are so used to the barely lit gauges that when they are finally lit properly it looks like they're brighter than the speedo/tach.

Btw, I thought the 09 and 10 models came with all sealed gauges, how could LEDs be installed???

I know I have a SESG, but I thought things would be the same in the gauge light department as all of you guys, but I just took a pic in the garage with no lights on and no flash and it seems that mine look as bright when stock as the pics I have seen here after the bulb replacement. Maybe something changed on the 09/10's?

Since the fairing will be off for my speaker installation, its a perfect time to change to the red LED guage lights. Was the above question ever answered as to whethwer or not the 2010SEUC has the dim guage light problem? If so, is the consensus WLED-X5 or WLED-RHP5? Someone found the WLED-RHP5 too bright. Your help is needed and very much appreciated. Thanks, Ed

Thanks guys!  Installed the 5LED's and they are right on as a match....make the little gauges step up to the plate.  I can see if I got oil pressure now when cranking in the dark garage.  WoooHo0.  Bummer that the Ricor Intimidators were the 'wrong size' in the mislabeled box or else I'd be able to give feedback in that thread.  Dangit.  What a hassle.   But.....at least the bulbs worked out great.  har. :drink:  spyder

Was the above question ever answered as to whethwer or not the 2010SEUC has the dim guage light problem? If so, is the consensus WLED-X5 or WLED-RHP5? Someone found the WLED-RHP5 too bright. Your help is needed and very much appreciated. Thanks, Ed
Will let you know this Saturday when I put the oil temp gauge in.    Richard

That oil temp gauge takes a different size bulb doesn't it?  Wonder which LED would fit that would match the RHP5's?   :nixweiss: spyder

Takes the same bulb, I just installed the oil temp gauge in my 09 SERG swaped the stock bulb with the one in the gauge and it still is hard to see and does not match at all. the gauge works fine but I would wait till moco comes out with a matching gauge before I bought another one, its not even close to the 09 serg backlite gauges, maybe annoying at night, but I hardley ever ride at night these days.    Doc.

The new oil temp gauge will not allow the larger size LED to fit thru the small hole. The bulb is very dim compared to the rest of gauges.

will attach 5 pictures here.

2010,..... going to look at new oil temp gauge today to see if I can modify it to take LED. With the factory bulb in, and lit, it is
so dim it looks like the bulb is burnt out and getting light from the other gauges.

Will take pictures if I can fix it and post here.

Installed the WLED-RHP5 in my CUSE4.  Before and after pics attached. I like the difference.  Can actually see my Oil Temp Gauge now.

I didn't install the oil temp gauge. So that's how it looks even with the hid bulb?  Nothing like the others. That would bug me if I did have the gauge put in. ???

Yeah, the Oil Temp is not "back lit" like the other gauges.  It is lit around the edges.  If you look at the Oil temp Gauge with the Fairing removed the entire gauge housing glows bright red.  The oil temp gauge housing is white opaque plastic.  I still prefer it over the red condom bulb.

I'm sure it has to be somewhat better. I'm all well lit up now without the otg.   I'm gonna leave it. :nixweiss:

I recently installed these gauges in my 09.  I'm told these are the 2010 gauges  (even though they have a -09 part number).

67516-09  (Speedo)
67522-09  (Tach)
74707-09  (Oil Pressure)
74708-09  (Fuel)
74709-09  (Voltmeter)
74715-09  (Air Temp)

If anything, (stock - no bulbs changed out) the four "little ones" are brighter than the speedo and tach.

Any word yet on a matching oil temp gauge?   :nixweiss:
