Handlebars replacement for Ultra CVO's
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:41:09 AM »

I am thinking about replacing my handlebars for a little more comfort in my upper back and neck.
I just don't like the way I lean forward and the way my back does not meet the back rest unless I am wearing a heavy jacket.  Its like I am rolling my back rather than sitting up with my chin down.  Also I don't have the bend in my arms that I want.
That said:
I went to Mile High HD on Saturday 10-20-12
Spoke with John and Al They are service and Parts gurus.
I told them about the recommendations I received here about Wild ones Chubbys 575.  The got me on their mock up Road King and tried some bars "EGRO and some others.
This turns out to be a big job.  They are convinced that the job will require cable extensions and a full day's labor.
Parts;
WO575 approx $220.
cables approx   $270
Labor six hours. for Total  over $1,100
We got to thinking and maybe a seat alteration would be a consideration at Bitchen Stichen to get me a little lower to raise my hands...
What do you guys think I want to make sure I get this right the first time because of the expense...
Thanks

For the WO575 bars you will not need to change any cables on the Ultra. We have done many without.

I have WO575s on my current bike, and I had them on my last.  You sound like you're describing the position I have to ride in with normal bars.  That being the case, you might not find the WO575s to be as good as you're hoping - I still have to stretch forwards, especially as the WO575 is wide, and reaching out to the grips uses up scarce arm length.

My ideal bar would be like the 575, same angle for the wrists, but 2" narrower and coming 1½" further back.  If such a bar exists, I've yet to find it...

Red Eagle,

Have you tried moving your back rest forward? As you have said it is a big job to replace the bars & still might not be what you want. My HD dealer wants $1700 to change out my bars. Right now, I'm staying with what I have!

I put the WO575 on mine, I love the extra 2x2 taller and closer bars, not to mention the bigger diameter bars look better.
I did however change out the hydraulic clutch line, I could have stayed with stock, but it was tighter and I did not like the tight look as well as I was afraid of it putting too much tension on the hose.

Looks like we might get our first rain snow this weekend though its to early to tell.
I am going to move up the back rest and see what that will do for me.

The Dealer has some bars called Ergo bars I think they are 2" taller.  I will look them up on line and see what I find out.  I will get something figured out.
It is so nice to post here and bounce ideas around before spending money.
WOW $1700.  I guess my guys aren't all that bad, they even offered me a 10% discount if I do it during the winter months.

I had the same problem as you and moving the backrest to the most forward position helped.  I bought Chubby 577's for $187 from the Powesport Superstore, I bought my cables (top quality) from Johnny Vaughan http://hdbikeparts.com/ for $284, and had the bars installed for $450, from a local indy.  My dealer stated they charge $1,500 for labor!

I changed my own bars on my 09 FLHT, what a PITA.

I would like a set of 1 1/4 bars for my 06.  Im happy with the riding position, but like the phat look.

Does anyone make a set of 1 1/4 bars that are similiar to the oem bars?

I dont want to replace cables.

I just had my 2013 changed using the  bars the catalog says wont work on CVO. Also had it done on the 2012. Dealer charged $548 including the bars. Just reroute some of the lines.

Befor you use HD to. Install you bars read my story. I would hate to have this happen to someone else (note to self...do not use HD in the South Bay ever again.). After 3 plus weeks in the shop due to lack of fwd thinking on what was actually needed to put my 12in chubbies I went in to get my bike.  I was so excited about finally getting my bike back (CVO Ultra 07 with recently installed zummo GPS) I failed to do a final QA on my bike before I left the shop.  When got home I went to install the GPS and it would not fit on dash, then found hydrolic oil all over the place as the seal on the reservoir was not installed correctly, then to make matters worse the seals round the fairing was not installed properly.  Total lack of attention to detail!

Never will I take the bike back to this shop... Paid 2k to have progressive suspension installed and to have bars installed. 900 for labor in which there appeared to beno QA...  They have the bike back now but will have to inspect like crazy as I do not know what I will get back after a week. I expect more from HD...

Putting 575 bars on is not a difficult task, it's just time consuming. There are a lot of good threads on here that will explain all the steps in very good detail. I've put on three and the last one took about three hours. Depending on the year and make of your bike, there might not be a need to get longer cables. My 2008 FLHX required it and my 2012 did not.

RedEagle,
Did you finally decide on which bars to go with?
I think that the ERGO bars you spoke of are a Klock Werks product, and very expensive( looking on their site)

I paid 4hours for labor   All cables and stock wiring worked fine. 360 for labor and 220 for the WO 575 bars. Done. I think a dealer who does this often should be able to do it that much time allowed.   All day seems like much.  :nixweiss:

Thanks for the all input guys.
My update;
I took RedEagle in for maintenance over the Thanksgiving holiday and I did not have any handle bars installed.  If I am going to spend this much I am going to wait until I know for sure just what I want.  My plan is to check out more bikes that have installed new bars and ask if I can sit on their bike.  I am pretty sure of where I need to be, but I want some more time to be sure I will be happy with the end result and now is not the time in Colorado to see a lot of bikes out and about.  I am also going to check with more of the local indy's they might agree to 4 hrs labor regardless of actual time.
Thanks for the input as usual this is what makes this forum Great!!
Thanks to Kingspoke for the pic.  Great looking ride...*S
Keep the input coming I am still studying all options.
