pictures of my 09 Springer with 16 inch apes
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:46:33 PM »

I picked up my 09 Springer today. I put on Wild 1 Chubby 16 inch Springer bars powder coated in gloss black, Rush slip ons, HD windshield adaptor kit powder coated black, and the detachable docking hardware for a back rest and sport luggage rack. [Edit] I've recently put Rinehart cross back exhaust on this bike, which really improved the performance and the sound. Here are some pictures. The last picture has some more recent mods which I identify right above the picture.

Here below is a pic after I put a tach on it, longer riser studs, and Black Pearl cables, black Goodridge banjos and banjo bolts, and Rinehart cross back exhaust:

I'm getting ready to ad the same bars (chrome) and same size on my 08.  They had to special order my cables, do you know what length they bought for yours?  BTW this looks awesome.

thanks,

For the 16 inch Wild 1 Chubby springer bars, the throttle and idle cables were made by Barnett, part no.s B102-30-30026+14 (throttle) and B102-30-40043+14 (idle). The clutch is a Goodridge stainless 71 inch universal brake line. You also need the universal clutch adapter made by Goodridge with the o-ring at the end. For the 09, the banjos on the clutch and brake masters are both 10mm which is different than the 08, where you have a 12 mm on the brake master and a 10 mm on the clutch master. The brake line is a Goodridge 54 inch universal and you need a 10 mm 90 degree banjo on the caliper end.

I went with universal brake lines versus custom lines on the clutch and brake so if I need to change length of cables it is easy without having to pay for the costly ends. As it turns out, these lengths I described above worked well for my bike.

I put 9.5 inch Wild 1 chrome Chubbys on my 08 springer and have those lengths if anyone wants them. That bike is also the black model. After seeing how the black bars look and feel on my 09 when riding, I've already ordered the parts to convert my 08 SE springer to black gloss 16 inch Chubbys.

I have some comparison comments on the 09 versus the 08 Springers since I own them both. First, the new front brake provides no more braking power than the 08. That was a big dissapointment. If anything, less braking power. I'm serious. Second, even though from the pictures it looks like the 09 does not have a cross over in the exhaust, it does. The rear cylinder runs much hotter on the 09 with stock exhaust than my 08 where have I Rinehart cross backs. Even after a short ride, the 09 rear cylinder cuts out at stop lights because of the heat just like my 08 did before I put the Rineharts on. Currently there is no full exhaust you can buy for an 09 that I am aware of. The Rineharts make the 08 feel and sound much more powerful than the 09 with Rush slip ons. I did put the 08 with the new exhaust on the dyno at 1,000 miles but that doesn't explain the difference.

I called Rinehart to see what they say about coming out with exhaust for the Rocker, since Rocker exhaust will likely work with the 09 springer because they use the same oil tank and oil lines as the 09 Springer. Rinehart said the Rocker exhaust is well along in development but could not give me a time frame for release.

Having to buy a tach for the 09 is also a sore spot. We had to order each part from the 08 parts manual to put it together, about 8 parts. Those parts are on the way. I have a feeling I'll be riding my 08 a lot more than my 09, once I get the 16 apes on that bike, until I can get a decent exhaust on the 09. To end on a positive note, the stock seat on the 09 is much more comfortable for me than the stock 08 seat. I was sore after 50 miles on the 08 seat and no problems after a recent 100 mile ride on the 09 seat.

Bitchin' bike!! That Black/Green is the most awesome color combo on any of the bikes as far as I am concerned. Nice touch with the black apes. Enjoy!

Rheiner could you rate on a scale 1-10, 10 being best both springer 08 and 09 ?

Sure, I'm happy to rate both bikes based on my subjective opinion and my bias for Harleys and my long ownership history of HD motorcycles going back 27 years. Taking away the add ons I made to both and going back to pure stock to compare apples to apples, I'd rate the 2008 FXSTSSE2 a 9.75 and the 2009 FXSTSSE3 a 10. They are both outstanding bikes and I have no complaints with either, only praise. I'd love to see a company in the world do it better. They both have superb performance and are artistically pleasing. Even though HD redesigned the front brake on the 09 to a 4 piston, as I said in an earlier post, I don't notice any additional braking power on the 09 vs. 08. Maybe HD was seeking redundancy and safety that the brake wouldn't fail as a reason to have 4 pistons. I understand there are technical limitations on what HD can do with the front brake on a Springer. If you want high performance brakes with ABS over the nostalgia and beautiful look of a springer, you'll need to look for a different bike--one that everyone else owns. When I ride, I'm always looking at the springs bouncing over bumps and just the look of them from all angles.

Having rode both bikes, the 08 and 09, short and long trips, the stock seat on the 09 is a nice improvement. I think because of the wider frame on the 09, the seat was designed differently but I'm not sure how. I took a measuring tape to the two seats and the stock seat on the 09 is only about 3/8 inch wider and about 1 1/2 inches shorter than the 08 from what I can tell. The 09 is much more comfortable on longer rides. However, if you have a passenger for more than a few miles, with almost zero padding, you'll want to have a spare seat. I ordered one made for the 09 Springer from HD that matches the inlay leather and design of the stock saddle so I can pop it on if I have a passenger.

I also like the 240 mm rear tire and much wider fender on the 09 versus the 200 mm on the 08. It gives it a higher performace look and feel to compliment the 110 CI engine and heavy breather that few HD bikes have. The extra chrome on the 09 swingarm and oil tank fills in the rear with a complete finished look so now with the 09, from wheel to wheel, you have show bike allure.

Now that I have rode the 09 without a tach for a few weeks, I realize I don't miss it that much, even though I have one ordered for it. Owning the 08, I can tell what rpm I am running at just by the gear/speed I am at. On the plus side of not having a tach, the front headlight shows itself nicely with the color and paint that matches the tank and fender. Take a look at my first picture above and you'll see what I mean. With no tach it also gives the handlebars a nice uninterrupted flow from grip to grip. So now I don't know if I even want to put it on when it gets here.

I personally think the paint jobs from HD on the 09 models, irrespective of color itself, is improved with a nice 3D look (you have to see it in person) with some flair and character that the 08 does not have.

If a person is honestly objective, you'd have to be hardpressed and stubborn to deny that the 09 has some nice improvements in style and appeal over the 08. Performance wise they are about equal.

Rheiner,

I have a 2009 on order (blue), and was also wondering about the tach and what pipes to install.  I saw one at a local store in black with the V&H 2-1 Big Radius.  I have the 2-2 BR on my Rocker C, and it is becoming so popular I think I want to go a different way.

Is the tach available as an integrated piece with the speedo?  I may do without one as well, as I really do not want to clutter up the bars.

Keep the pics coming.

I just ordered Black Pearl brake, clutch, throttle & idle cables with Goodridge black end fittings. The idle & throttle cables are back ordered for a month though. I'm looking forward to the change and I think it will make the gloss black bars look better but we'll see when they arrive.

I believe it is, HD part no. 74752-08 is the closest match to the stock look. I've about decided to go with this versus no tach or putting one on the handlebars.

I never use my tach, even though it is a cool little bit of bling on the '07 handle bars, esp. at night with that reddish glow. I can't see upgrading a stock speedo to include the tach since Harleys are generally shifted by feel. Buy then, everybody has their own preferences!

Unfortunately the stock seat on the 09 springer will not fit the 08 springer. There is a lot of discussion on this site about other aftermarket seats for the 08.

the 240 rear-tire changes a lot ...seat , sissy , detachables etc etc.
How can you possibly "corner" with Apes  :P I would love to get the low-down on that ...just curious as i never ridden them so pardon my ignorance...

Rik

I actually find it easier to corner with the apes, but non ape riders have a hard time believing that :)

After riding with apes a while it's all natural, handling is very good, comfort, etc. I'd have a hard time going back to the riding position of the stock bike after getting my candle lit with these bars.

I might be interested in buying the 9.5" bars and cables if you still have them... :huepfenlol2:

I sent you a PM over a week ago about it. :2vrolijk_21:

I like the so-called buckhorn bars that Harley put on their original Springers. I guess they'd be equivalent to mini-apes now. I've used them on my old springer and they are quite comfy and visually balanced with the bike. The apes on rheiner's bike are a personal preference thing, but to my eye they are too wide or too sharp-angled at the base. You've got a wide horizontal bar passing through two narrow risers. It doesn't "flow" to my eyes.  I don't like the bends that company puts in their bars, they are too tight. Paired up with the small 18 inch wheel, this very high rising bar reminds me of a BMX bike. No insult intended, because everyone knows, opinions are like.....

I'm still on my stock bars, and while I can think of a better set-up, I can't find one.

Outstanding bike. You did one hell of a job.

I picked up my 09 Springer today. I put on Wild 1 Chubby 16 inch Springer bars powder coated in gloss black, Rush slip ons, and the detachable docking hardware for a back rest and sport luggage rack. The Rinehart cross backs on my 08 Springer are way meaner but these will do, reluctantly, until Rinehart (my personal preference) makes something for this bike. Here are some pictures. You can see the clutch and brake cables are a bit sloppy now. I tie wrapped them until I decide if I want handle bar clamps or what.

You have put together one hell of a bike there.  Outstanding.  I love the black chubbies with chrome controls.  You got any miles on that beauty yet?

Got my ape hanger ticket in Daytona.  Didn't get stopped all week then all of a sudden twice in 5 miles.  $101.00 the cop said think of it as the cost of doing business.  The funny part is he said the vehicle is unsafe, but yet I can ride in florida with no helmet.  :)

 Hi,
Wow bike looks sharp, I am envious. Don't know how the riding weather has been by you. I was just wondering on how the comfort is on the ape's. I have heard from some that the ride quality declines. It looks to me as though it would be a really good feel. Just wondering what you think. Thanks

The WO569 bars that I put on this bike are 37.5 inches wide.

Andy,

I don't ride this bike when I am touring so it's perfect. It feels like I'm on a Stallion when I ride this Harley Davidson 110 CI CVO Springer with loud Rinehart exhaust around town, which is exactly what I want it for. I can make a 360 degree turn as tight as I could with stock bars. And the bars are tall enough that I can see all the cross traffic under my hands. Even cops give me a nod of approval as they look me and my bike over at stop lights with my hands many inches over the legal shoulder height limit.

I know this is an old thread but I was curious if you had any feedback on the bars after having them for a while? I'm going to be ordering the same bars this weekend. I was wondering if you had a pic of you sitting on the bike and how tall you are? Thanks for any feedback.

I'm 5'11" and the bars are great for riding around town. Don't know that I'd like to tour with it though, mostly because there's no cruise control. I'm generally a long distance rider and I only have about 2,600 miles on this motorcycle. I'm thinkinking of selling it because it sits in the garage and doesn't get used like it should but whenever I take it out I get more second looks and thumbs up than all other motorcycles I've ever owned combined.

I know this is old and i tried to send a private message, but not sure if it went through because nothing was in outbox.

I am looking to go with a similar set up.   I am running some 16" Carlini Flying Apes and they run about 1-1.5 higher than regular 16" Apes.  They are also a 41 inch spread.  The risers I am going with are only 1.25 high.

So in looking at yours it appears that it will be almost exactly the same.  I know you went stock risers so the difference between the higher riser and the higher bars will balance out. The only exception will be the spread of the bars are a little more on the bars I am getting.

Anyhow, I was going to run the Magnum Black Pearl cables that you posted on the end with the upgrade.  Can you tell me the length you used on all the cables for the Magnum Black Pearl?  Did you use a plus on those cables?  I did read the one post on the Barnett lengths and I was thinking I might be able to shave off an inch, but then the wider spread might compensate.  Did you feel you had any extra room or was your lengths pretty tight?

I appreciate any feedback you can help me with. I was wanting to order the cable before I get the bars in for timing purposes, but if it is really too hard, than I will have to wait I guess.  I am working on patience. lol

Good job on that bike!
