If you clear it and the code returns it's not a historical code to just be cleared.  It's an actual ongoing fault that needs to be fixed.  It'll keep right on recurring until the cause is fixed.  Rather like repeatedly washing all the bugs off a broken windscreen.  No matter how many times you clear off the bugs it's still busted underneath.....

As best I can determine, P1654 concerns a tachometer signal problem.  It's not even listed in my 2005 Electrical and Diagnostic Manual btw.  What model and year bike are you dealing with?

If you want to trace circuits, that code is associated also with terminal 3 of the ECM, which involves the tach.  Wish I could find more, but like I said it's not even in the manual I have.

A banana that belonged to a friend had that code here a few years ago Jerry.  Was a bitch to find.  Ended up being some fretting at the pin in the ECM plug.  It was come and go for awhile then persistent.  Solved with a new pin and a little dielectric grease.

:2vrolijk_21:   Good info Don, and I wouldn't be surprised if this or something similar is cvo-05's problem.  Since the tach works, the code might just be indicating the circuit resistance or voltage is slightly out of the normal parameters.

cvo-05, if you're familiar with the harness connection to the ECM, you might want to just try disconnecting it and then reconnecting it, clear the code, then fire the bike up and see if it still comes back.  Of course I have no way of knowing your technical expertise with this sort of thing, so if you aren't comfortable messing with wiring and changing terminals you could always take the information you have so far to a technician.  Good luck.

Just to fully isolate one from the other remove the Power Commander and plug the ECM connector directly back in to the ECM.  Then clear the code and see if the problem stays gone or recurs.

Lt green/violet wire is your data communication wire

follow its path with an ohm meter...a digital one, not a buzzer

Just another thought, did you remove, clean and reconnect the plug at both ends?  Both the ECM (easier to get to) and the tach?
