Topic: 04 Pumpkin wont start. need help (Read 2993 times)

Ok, heres the short story. I took the bike off the battery tender in Michigan Thursday night. I started the bike and loaded it on the trailer. it sit there off the tender all night and till noon friday when we left for Daytona. I stopped for the night in north Georgia and set the alarm. Got up saturday morning, shut the alarm off and drove to daytona. Got here unloaded the bike and it wouldnt even crank. The dash lights come on but thats it. I went and bought a battery charger/tender and put it on last night before bed. This morning the charger indicated "charged". I tried to start it with the same results. Still Very dead. Any ideas? Did the battery just die on the road here? Or is there bigger issues here? Any ideas at all will be helpful.

Original battery?

Did you really check the connections. Many many failures where the cables connect to the terminal.

Original battery. My first thought was some connection vibrated loose on the trailer. i checked the battery connections and the starter wires. they seem fine

If the battery is strong maybe it is locked up in the alarm. Just saying if you are certain you have plenty of electrical power getting to the starter then maybe your alarm has disconnected your ignition. Try resetting your alarm with the fob and disarming a couple of times to make sure it is all reset.
If you lost all power to the bike via a dead battery or a disconnected battery it may be an alarm/ignition cutout problem.

Do you have a horn or lights? Turn signals? If not, you have a bad connection someplace. You checked the cables to the battery, did you check them on the other end? Is there a click or anything at the starter? If not, have you tried to jump it over on the starter with a little wire?

If you're on a grade where you can get a decent roll and provided that your rear tire has good traction (rubber) you can try to push start it in second. Just offering suggestions of issues I've had in the past on various bikes.

I have lights, horn and turn signals. when i push the starter button the red display on the radio goes black and there is a "click" from a wire that is under the seat on the rear fender near the battery. it doesnt attempt to crank. When you push the start button it almost seems to suck the electricity right out of it. The lights dont dim though. just the radio.
one thing I didn't mention. It poured down rain for 6 hours and the bike was on an open trailer.

If you have a volt/amp meter, you can check voltage at the starter solenoid. Should be very close to the reading that you get at the battery terminals. If not, bad wire or bad ground. If good, check while attempting to crank the engine. If it drops way down it's a battery or wire problem. If it doesn't, indicates a starter problem. You can also check starter draw with an ampmeter to see if it's drawing too much. Just my 2 cents...

might be the battery in your fob or your fob came out of sinc. hold the fob next to the bike and hold down the
button for about 20 to 30 seconds and see what happens. if nothing happens try new battery in the fob.

I'd pull the battery and have it checked, may be on it's way out.

On the way to Sturgis a couple years ago, at a gas stop, a guy at the pumps had the same symptoms. He had activated his security system when he went to pay for his gas. I was behind him in line and watching it all. I asked if he had his other key fob for his security system... He did and it worked - bike fired up and off he went...

Question.... If it is a problem with the key fob/security system would entering in the code via the turn signals remedy the problem if another battery/fob isn't available?

Maybe not if it's EFI. If the fuel pump doesn't get power, then there won't be any fuel pressure to the injectors. You can try to bump start all day long and all you get it really tired and a flooded engine.

I got it! We are on the road in Daytona! It was the starter. I tried all of your advice and even called a few friends and nothing worked. In the end (with the help of my wife nagging at me about bringing the 1 bike of 4 that didnt start) I ended up banging on the starter and it fired up! I took a page out of the old Hotrod days. This may be indications of a problem coming in the future, but today it has started every time. Thanks again to everyone that offered advice.

Seeing as the starter is a "Toyota" starter, my past work with ricer cars tells me the solenoid is failing...

THere are 2 internal wires, the symptoms are indicative of one of the connections failing...

You are right though... it is a sign of upcoming problems...
