A 10 Degree, 1 Mile Ride, For Nothing!
« on: December 29, 2007, 07:56:23 PM »

OK, So I'm going to make a run down the snowy driveway and pick up the distant newspaper.  I always have a path cleared on the long thing so when nature and County Road & Bridge do their part I can go farther.  Heck I even clear a part of the county road I live off of so I can go even farther!

With the bike warmed up in the garage and me bundled up, I venture a ways and pause at the bottom of the north facing hill...

A firm throttle and no hesitation has me to the top of the hill looking back.  Snow is hugging the higher elevations in the background.  I'm about halfway here...

OK, have made it to the county road.  Looking east.  Can see on the side of the road how I do my part to help the County :)...

Time to get the paper.  What the %!@*&.  Empty!!!

Well, the gloves are off for the pics (and the fingertips are feelin' it).  Might as well glance west.  The sun is low.  More snow falling up high...

Time for the return.  Was hesitant to make this scoot wondering if the serious cold would crack anything non-metal.  No problem.  And the engine loved it.  And I learn the paper was already picked up.  That's OK, the cold scoot delivered a warm feeling inside...

And I am complaining here in Reno because I haven't ridden for a week because of the snow.

That's gotta be one of the best ride reports I've read........very creative. :2vrolijk_21:  And some great photos, too.  It almost felt like I was there experincing it, as I was reading it.  But damn glad I wasn't.  Like Jorge, think I'll stay right here where I'm at.

But taking nothing from you guys over there........you've got a very beautiful state that I love to ride or drive in. :2vrolijk_21:

Sfarson,

Great report and photos.  I bitched and whined today as I rode 25 miles to a Harley store and about froze my fingers off.  Nowhere near as scenic as what you have there.

Thanks for the report.

looks to me (judging by the pictures) that the bike followed you on your walk for the paper.  I LOVED the pics, thanks for posting.  Did the heated grips work?

Nice to hear from you all!  Temps typically won't stop me (Though there is truth to the saying, "Cold is when the temperature is below your age"), but road conditions will and even this journey wasn't without, "Steve, what are you getting yourself into".  But anyway, sneaking out like this does give one a slight satisfaction that one was taken away from winter.

WOW!!!  How longs your driveway?????  I thopught mine was long at 7/10s of a mile, of course all gravel.

Did get to ride Christmas Eve and also Christmas Day, was in the mid 40s in Maryland.  Put 134 miles on the new Duracell.

Cold and windy here in Colorado, going to be -2 tonight, winds last night were gusting over 60 MPH! But Wednesday it should warm up to almost 50! Yesterday in the southern mountain town of Alamosa, the wind chill was -48, almost like Minnesota!

I agree, Colorado is a beautiful place to ride. I rode thru there a couple of years ago.

BUT IT WASN'T 10 DEGREES OUT. I did get to take a THREE hour ride yesterday, 41.4 degrees not bad. Half hour to the bar in Hannibal half hour back. I guess its all in how you count.

How as the road, I have never ridden up Pikes Peak, was there a lot of washboard?

It's been awhile since I've been up it, but it was in fine shape for two wheels.  Minimal washboarding.  If I were to ride to the top and had a choice, I'd try to go after there had been some moisture from the skies.  It can be one dust bowl of a ride.

Talon,

When I rode up it was on the way home from Sturgis. As I remember the road was pretty good, it was the visibility that was the scare factor, (fog, aka, clouds). I would definitly do it again. Maybe this year as will come home or go to Sturgis that way.

Awesome scenery& great pics! I definitely need to ride out that way. Repeating an earlier posed question, how long is your driveway? As for riding in snow, I haven't done that since I got rid of the '83 Midnight Virago.

something you need to do at least once

Well, Ive done it once, and haven't been in a hurry to go back. It was back in the 80's and I was riding a goldwing and pulling a trailer. When we stopped at the guard shack, the lady asked me what I was going to do with the trailer. I said I guessed I was going to pull it up the hill. Duh, 26 years old and stupid. Thankfully she advised me to leave it at the bottom. As we made our ascent, it wasn't too bad. but it was late in the day and dry and the road got worse as we went up. By the time we made the top, I was scared and dreading the ride down. All the cars and motorhomes, etc had made soup of the road conditions that day. The only saving grace for us was we were the last ones allowed to head up, so on the way down, we knew we could go a little wide if needed. I've been back to Colorado many times since, but just drive right on by Pikes Peak.  ;D
