Upper Peninsula of Michigan
« on: July 07, 2011, 03:54:00 PM »

Just got back from an 1810 mile trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan. We went up through Wisconsin, where I had my closest encounter with a deer. No time to react and he was already across the road. Found a good steak house in Ironwood, Mi. called Maplewood Steakhouse. The trip along Lake Superior was beautiful even though we had to contend with cool temps and mist.
We stopped for a day in Mackinaw City. Mackinac Bridge was under construction so we couldn't ride on the concrete half of the lane, we had to ride the metal corrugated side that made things interesting. We went over to the island and had a good time. No motorized vehicles allowed. Lots of history from the war of 1812 and the fur trade. Saw two people with bicycle wreck injuries. Amateurs on bikes, one going too fast down hill, the other spooked a horse that knocked her over. Of course we had to buy some of their famous fudge.
We rode the thumb of Michigan and the road was good but only had a few glimpses of Lake Huron. One stop had some history about a white rock in the lake that was important to Indian history and a treaty.
In the Detroit area we went to the Chrysler museum. There were some interesting cars there but they only display 75 at a time. We ate lunch in Waterford, Mi. at another very good restaurant across the street from ABC Harley Davidson. The name of the place was the Lions Den. Really good food and reasonably priced. We decided to go all the way home after the museum and that amounted to 492 miles.
All in all, a very nice trip.

We did the UP trip two weekends ago. Every time I'm up there I am in awe! We started out in Traverse City. Did Harbor Springs and the tunnel of trees then crossed the bridge. Fortunately for us, we were able to ride on the concrete across the bridge both ways. Next up to Taquamenon Falls and then overnight in Marquette. Gotta stay at the the Landmark Inn!

Day two was down to Iron Mountain, around eastern Wisconsin, then back on US 2 along Lake Michigan. Overnight in Mackinaw City and then home to TC.

Great ride and I would recommend it to anyone!

I did a MI trip in July.  Went up the west cost of MI, Stayed a night at Warren Dunes with my parents.  Then rode up to Muskegon for Bike Times on the 15 and 16th of July.  Then rode the coast of lake MI up to Mackinaw.  I did do Bear Dunes, then up 119, the Tunnel of Trees, and stopped at Leggs in for the Polish food and Beer.  Then I went into Mackinaw for the night.  Crossed the bridge in the morning, had to ride about 1.5 miles on the metal grating, not as bad as I thought.  Went on in to Tequaminon falls and whitefish point.  Then over and Spent the night just out side Marquette.  Pictured rocks lake shore was great, along with several sets of falls around Munising.  After that I followed the lower shore to Duluth MN,  and then dropped down to Milwaukee to do the Harley museum and then on home to TN.

I loved the cool weather in MI.  It was a 3100 mile trip for me.

We just got back yesterday from the around Lake Superior trip as well. 2,145 miles all together- For those who haven't done it, it is definitely worth it. I'll post another topic with some pics later.

It's an N-Line trailer, got it from a dealer in Memphis, Tn. I don't know if they are still in business or not. I had a local painter do the trailer. It came out pretty nice. I had the trailer shipped from the dealer to the painter shortly after I bought the bike new.
