Long Distance Underwear.
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:28:27 AM »

Hey all, I was wondering if there is a preferred style, brand, make of underwear for long days in the saddle.  My regular Fruit of the Loom's start to dig in and cause havoc after 300 miles or so.  :o   Was wondering about Bicycle Shorts under the jeans?  Any ideas.  Don't really want to use Jell packs on the seat or sheep skins. Cheers.

I swear by Under Armour.  I tried a pair of the LDC shorts, and wasn't impressed (and flat-out hated the horizontal fly).

Have the same problem with the tightie-whities...cut into the buttocks a bit.  Last long trip, I tried the boxer brief style of drawers and made a big difference.  Didn't go expensive as I wasn't sure this style would work but it helped out tremendously.  I tried Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Joe Boxer brand.  I looked at the expensive long-distance brands but for the price difference, I couldn't justify not going with the regular brands (I'm sure others of our group will expand on the more expensive stuff).  However, I thought of the three I tried, I liked the fit of the Fruit o' da Loom brand boxer brief...seemed to stay in place better than the Hanes or Joe Boxer.

Good luck on however proceed but my opinion, start cheap first to see if it works for you.  I couldn't justify spending $10-$30 bucks for a pair of drawers and find out I didn't like 'em.

I swear by Under Armour...

Wore the Under Armour under regular Wranglers on my trip (July) to Texas and back... no complaints whatsoever.  I had the long version, just above the knee, and the material actually kept my upper leg cool too.

LDC or Aerostich bicycle works great for me. Easy 800 mile days.

Best there is on a long hot day ride.   :jalapeno:

The original men's 9" long boxer brief from Under Armor; but yes they are $20.00 a pair. You don't skimp on the bike, why would you skimp on your comfort?    :nixweiss:

:2vrolijk_21: Agree on the UA 9" boxers.  Added benefit is they can be washed in the hotel sink and dry by morning.  Also wear the UA t shirts as a base layer in summer.  Wicking action keep you cool and dry on hot days.  Cotton briefs are a bad idea.  Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet and sticks to your skin.  Also Harley sells a seat pad that work better than a sheep skin.  Keep your butt ventilated and comfortable on hot days.  Just don't use it in cold weather when you need the heated seat.

Bicycle shorts may feel a little strange if your not used to that type of short. A compression type short without the bicycle pad are nice. Compression helps some with circulation and may help keep your legs feeling better. I use a full length compression layer when skiing and believe it has helped reduce some of the soreness after a long day on the slopes and my legs feel "fresh" at the end of the day. 100% on the Harley ventilated seat pad foe hot days.       JoeS

I wear the UA daily and must have 25 pairs. But for the long trips I like the LDC better. Use one pair for two week trip. Put them on to ride and have a pair of UA to wear at the end of the day after a shower for a couple of hours before bed. ( I travel light)  Tried ExOfficio mesh but the seams came over my cheeks and after 12 hrs on the bike they cut into me and hurt. Just use the LDC now and love them.
