Title: My 2018 CVO Road Glide
Post by: FLSTFI Dave on September 03, 2017, 07:55:53 AM
Well yesterday morning I traded my 2017 CVO Street Glide for a 2018 CVO Road Glide.  Sure glad to have a Road Glide again.  Ended up going with Gunship Gray.  I just love the black chrome exhaust system and many of the subtle details on the bike.

Congratulations, Dave! My sincerest condolences that you had to spend a whole year on a Street Glide. Sounds like purgatory.

Keep some fishing line in your pocket to quickly cut the two side emblem tape next time you're close to one  :2vrolijk_21: .

They should, but did not.  That thing from the factory is a Joke.  At 60mph there is so much wind you can not hear the factory sound system.  Had a Klock Werks 14" Sport Flair from my 15 CVO Road Glide Ultra sitting in the garage.  Put that on the bike with 65 miles on the bike.  Huge improvement, can hear the music and wind is almost gone.  Added the back rest from the 17 street glide also.

I have 100 miles on it so far.  Really liking the ride.  Handles great and powers is nice.  Maybe a slight bit more power than the 114, nothing earth shaking but nice.  Loves the curves.

First two modifications were done yesterday morning, before I went out and put 260 more miles on it.  Both are purely functional, a Klock Werls 14 Sport Flair so I can hear the sound system and to keep wind off me.  Second a rider back rest for comfort.

Maybe you can answer a question. What bars can you put on the CVO road glide? Called HD shop and asked and said none at the moment. They said cause of the heated grips. Told them I thought only the Limited on Ultra CVO's had heated grips. Anyone know the answer.

And that is one sweet looking ride. How do you like the 21" wheel? Any change to the handling with the larger wheel?

I test rode a 2018 CVO Street Glide and it had heated grips too.  The CVO Road Glide doesn't seem to have them and I'm okay with that.

Is the backrest a standard HD backrest or does the custom seat take a different backrest?

One, the CVO road glide does not have heated grips.  The CVO limited does and the CVO Street glide does.

Two, I have added heated grips to 2 CVO Road Glides with 14" Yaffe bars.  My CVO Road Glide ultra came with heated grips and I added Factory 47  14" bars with no troubles.

That Harley shop is clueless.

I really like the 21" wheel.  It does not seem to change the handling any.  The front may be a little firmer do to very little tire side wall to absorb bumps.

The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide are two piece seats.  HD does not offer a rider bike rest for them.  This is a rider back rest bracket from CVObackrest.com  I then am using a CVO Passenger back rest pad on it.

For me a back rest is a must on 500 plus mile days

Disappointed Harley does not make these grips in a Heated version as I like the collection.  May have to try heat deamons or the grips of the street glide which are not an exact match.

Passanger pegs work good as hwy pegs.

Not at all rich.  Normally I trade every two years with 45K miles on the bike I am trading.  I really wanted back on road glide bad.  The local dealer worked well with me on the trade in, which had 21K miles.

Super sharp Bike! I'm a SG fan, but that is nice. I like the color matched wheels too! I noticed you bought it at Smokey Mountain - Figures they would get one of the 1st. Couple quick questions if its not prying to much - did they do you right on trade and did you pay retail or better? Just curious.

I have owned one street glide, the 2017 CVO I traded on this.  I'm a die hard road glide guy.

The color matched wheels are great, really love how it looks with the bike.

I am one of Smoky Mountains better customers, 14 bikes since 07 between my wife and I.  6 have been CVO.  I feel they did me very well on the trade.  I'm very happy with the deal, they took care of me.  I really can not give the full details, as it would not be fair to them.

I can say, I have brought several friends into the dealership for new bikes.  They have been very happy with how they were treated and the deal.

No I am not that guy.  Not one of the six CVO's I have bought from them every hit the floor.  They had deposits on them long before they got to the dealer, and even before any one knew what the CVO's would be.

It's getting there.  I still have the heavy breather to add along with the fullsac head pipe.  I am also looking into having some orange stitching done on my back rest to tie it in with the seat stitching.  My Yaffe 14" monkey bars are on order.

I'm also debating doing a 40~50's style Navy plane pin up girl on each side.  Not sure, I may just leave it very clean like it is, as it gets lots of compliments.

The aircraft nose art and other pinup girl ideas are way better than my first thought.  When first saw the battleship looking monochrome bike my first  thought was the nose art on the WWII era PT boats.

The 2017 also had the new suspension.  I put 20,526 miles on my 2017 CVO street glide.  In my opinion it is the best suspension that has been put on a Harley touring bike.  My 17 is the first bike I did not upgrade the rear shocks, and the second bike I did not do the front forks.

On my 15 SERGU I ran Ohlin HD-159 shocks after first 500 miles.  Loved them, so much my 13 SERK has Ohlin HD-159 rear shocks and an Legends Axeo front cartridges.

The 17 while not as good as my king, was good enough I chose not to improve it.  I doubt I do anything to the 18 suspension.  I think the front is very similar to progressive mono tubes I have used on other road glides.

I have used Progressive shocks, but I think the new improved HD shocks are as good as the  944 FST progressive shocks I had on my 12 SERG.

Hope this helps.

I went to 4 different dealers today between San Diego and Orange County to see the Roadglide in person and all 4 were already sold out. Seems like they all went for around 3-5K over sticker according to them but all had a similar story. Huntington Beach HD is obviously a large dealer (never been there before) as they said they have already sold 4 CVO's, 2 RG and 2 SG. They had a wall of unsold previous CVO's including 3 16's and they said they haven't seen this much action on CVO's in years but of course thats what the salesman says but obviously since all 4 stores I went to today were large dealers people are loving the bikes.
I was disappointed I didn't get to see one (though weather was great and enjoyed the 300+ mile search) but happy to see your progress on the new bike.

I sure hope the frame does not change.  I sure do not want the urge next year.  So far really happy with this bike, and very glad to be back on a road glide.

I have heard production is cut on CVO's and that many areas the new ones are going over MSRP.

Local dealer in Albuquerque moved away from being an MSRP dealer. Was told that CVO's would bring premium $$$ and the best existing customer would get was MSRP. Regarding the production cuts, that may be true but the dealer seemed to think they'd get an allocation of 3-5 for each ordering period. I believe that is bi-monthly but not sure, could be quarterly ??

Great review on the suspension Dave and great info. all around.

Thanks

After test riding CVO Road Glide (orange lava) at the AIMExpo in Columbus last weekend and the pictures you have posted and questioned you answered, made my decision on the gunship grey. Went to dealership yesterday to see about price and if anyone had put a deposit on one yet. Good on no deposits on any CVOs yet but they had add $3400 over MSRP. Told them "No Thanks", then they wanted at least $1000 over but finally got them to go MSRP plus tax and title. Filled out some paperwork and gave them a deposit. This will be my first road glide and CVO.

Also my first CVO and first Road Glide.  Loving the bike so far but I agree with Dave - the stock windshield looks good but might as well not even be there.  And a riders backrest is high on my list, too.

Added the new windshield as soon as I got home from dealer.  Back rest too.

Loving the bike, have 2819 miles on it already.

I see you added a good antenna, how does it work?

Every hidden antenna I have ever owned has sucked in my area. Nothing like a real antenna. I see the hot rod guys are adding them and bending them up under the fender or between the bags.

Thanks Rob.  Sure like the feel of the 14" better than stock.

That is a CB antennae, not one for the radio.  The hidden radio antennae does not work very well at all unless you are in town next to the radio station.  I usually just use my iPhone or XM for music.

Yes, it is the BOOM Stage II with the saddlebag amp.  I can not hear the bag speakers on the hwy, have not ever been able to on any bike.

The front speakers are fine on the hwy, I can hear them up to 100 mph.  Not sure about faster as thats as fast as I have gone.  It is a good sounding system for factory.

How does your windshield fit the rubber trim?

I ask as I tried a Windvest (my preferred windshield) and a Memphis Shades. Neither of them fit like the OEM HD windshield. I am in need o a windshield that sits 3 1/2"-4" above the highest part of the dash. I brought the fitment issue up with both the owner of Windvest and Memphis shades.

That is a Klock Werks Pro Tour 12" windshield on my bike in the last few pictures.  It takes a little work but does fit the factory rubber trim pretty good.  I have switched back to the Klock Werks Sport Flair 14", it is actually an inch lower, looks sportier and works about the same.

Great company, good service. I  just don't like their tall shields. For me, they are not wide enough and so my shoulders catch a lot of wind.

Simon, he makes a touring RG shield which is wider and a sport touring which is narrower at the top so it has a sportier appearance and plays well with taller bars.

I looked at them. I like that they give two measurements (windshield size and height above the dash).

I may try them once I figure out my required height.

The Klock Werks Sport Flair on my 15 CVO Road Glide Ultra was perfect, could wear a hat up to 80 mph and it would not blow off, could smoke a cigar.  I got very little wind.

Its not so good on this bike which is why I tried the 12 Pro Tour which is actually 1 inch tall and a lot wider than the sport flair but I had the same wind.

Not sure what I will try next.  I think the reason I have more wind, is no lowers, and due to engine guard style there are no wind deflectors on engine guard either.  The seat hight is the same on both bikes as I put a low profile corbin on the Ultra.

Just sharing my experience with their tallest touring model. Bought at Ouray GTG. Maybe they changed the design between then and now?

After the stock HD, and a Cee Baileys, I purchased a Clearview. The Clearview has a slightly wider base with hips and works really really well. This windshield got rid of so much wind noise around my ears that I now smile when I ride this bike.  This is the best money I have spent on this motorcycle.

Yes, stock Black ones on the 2009 CVO Road Glides.

I did a couple more upgrades to the Bike.

I installed a hard mount plug for my heated gear.  On the left side, mid frame heat deflector.  Barley noticeable and out of the way and very functional.

Also added hand wind deflectors.  I could not get heated grips of the defiance collection to match the bike.  So figured I would see if these help keep my hands warm with heated gloves in the 30's.  Apes put the hands in the wind, but I love them for the comfort.

Dave,

All of your bikes have looked killer my friend!

I have had hand shields on my bike for about 4 years now. I absolutely love them on year round, not just for winter. Having ape of any size make your hands ride truly in the wind.

It's amazing how many big bugs have met Mr. hand shield head on!  :drummer:  lol.

I have thought about them for a few years.  Never did it has hands were always fine with heated grips and heated gloves, even at 15 degrees in the wind.  I knew gloves alone would not keep hands warm in low 30's.  Really did not want to loose the special CVO defiance grips that come on the Road Glides, so I did not do heated grips.  Years past CVO limited always had they same grip, this year they do not.

They seem to work pretty well, and do see a lot of dead bugs on them.  Several people have also commented they look good on my bike.

Thanks for the comments about my bikes, I sure appreciate it.

They slip over the backend of the control lever where the mirror hole is used to mount the mirror. Now the mirror also holds the handguard in place.

Very easy installation.  Mirror stem holds it in place.  Hardest part it getting the stem and guard to stay exactly where you want them when tightening the nut.

The bludgeoning of my bank account will again start with exhaust, tuners, air suspension, wheels, forks, triple trees, front fender, etc.  Mike...save that parts list!
