Heel shifter is the only way to go imo.  But ONLY after you install the EZ shift.  Moves the dang thing back actually beyond the rear edge of the footboard so this big old 11 1/2 still got plenty of room.  I just find it much easier to move my foot back a little and press down to upshift.  With the EZ shift you really don't have to lift your foot - just slide it back and press down.  Can't ride without my EZ brake and EZ shift. :2vrolijk_21:

Actually, when I got my first FL in '95 I had to get used to the heel shifter. Once I did, I loved it. My street bikes of course, have no heel shift. Never looking for the heel on the street bikes and never upshft with the toe on the FL. You can get used to everything. Hoist! 8)

The only time I toe shift is when the stupid heel shifter disappears on you. You go to shift and it's not there!

it felt awkward at first coming from a softy with forward controls, but i find it easier to heel shift then to try and get my toe between the floor board and the front peg

Neal, please tell me you're joking here.

OK, let's have a quick course in adjusting the controls to fit the individual rider. We'll call it " make the bike fit you 101 " You losen the socket head cap screw, pull off the lever, rotate it to whatever point clears your boot and then push it back on and tighten the screw.

He is A-OK in my book.  Last two bikes I had I couldn't wait until I could install the EZ products.  Just could not ride comfortably with the stock brake and shift levers.  the EZs are much, much more comfortable and easy to use imo.

I use the heel shifter all the time. I took the heel off on my old 1995 for a while, until I got the extended one. That made the difference. The extended lever makes it much more comfortable on long trips too.
