FINAL DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT
« on: June 25, 2008, 06:54:54 AM »

My Friends 01 Road King Classic's belt sheared in 2  last night. I am going to help replace on the weekend. This is one thing I've never had to do on any of my bikes. How many hours am I looking at?. I'm handy & have all tools so that's not a problemTHE MUFFMAN

For me, it would be an ALL Day ordeal.  Never have changed the belt but have changed rear tires and have had the inner primary off.  So I have been there, just not at the same time.  Plan for all day and if you do it in less time, great.   Someone that has done it many times is maybe 4 hours?    :nixweiss:

Yeah, I'm basically been as far as you. I told him I'll need 6 hours for sure. Thanks. THE MUFFMAN

I take about 3.5 hours to do the swap. Be sure you have new starter shaft and main shaft seals as well . Inspect the shift shaft seal that goes into the tranny. These are notorious for weeping and if it is you may as well replace it while you are in there.

The last one I replaced took about 4 hours. Replace all the seals while your there. If the bike has a lot of miles on it its a good time to replace the swing arm frame bushings to .

Thanks. I didn't order the seals earlier. Will do. THE MUFFMAN

Yeah, but look at all the knowledge and experience you're gaining.  Some folks pay MMI big bucks for what you're getting for free!

All kidding aside I really enjoy stuff like that. My problem is I never keep a bike long enough where I have to do real serious stuff. I like a challenge so this will be right up my alley. I'll let everyone know how long it took me after the weekend. I put a chrome Isolated drive sprocket on my 07 a few weeks back & it was almost as much fun as cleaning the bike. THE MUFFMAN

I've never done this either, but I've been told if you have some miles on the bike, you might want to change, or at least inspect the rear pulley. Maybe HD-Dude can comment on this?

The rear pully should be checked at the regular service intervals. Very rarely do they get worn out unless a rock or other debris gets caught up. The aftermarket custom pullys do wear faster, the aluminum teeth tend to "square" off.

hd,
What is the difference between a "Side-Car" belt, and a regular belt?  :nixweiss: Please advise.  Later--HUBBARD

The sidecar belt is stronger due to the increased load of the car.

Hey Hub,

They are stronger and seem to have lasted a bit longer for me than the stock ones ever did, but they still snap and I blame Otis :)
