I've always liked most of Russell Mitchell's work, but then I like minimalist stuff (which is why I bought a CVO Road King
). I would, however, think one could come pretty close to duplicating the look for a lot less than $50K. A frame, two tires of the front of a 727, a sand-blasted engine and handlebars from a Schwin Spider bike and you're most of the way there. Okay, there's more to it than that, but removing parts seems to be easier than adding them.
I don't know what his company is like to deal with, but he admits he can be a bit of a bastard at times. With the low volume of bikes they are necessarily expensive. Worth it? I dunno, people pay hundreds of thousands for a piece of junk they call art, so I guess it is to them. The only custom bikes I've seen that I'd consider paying what they asked would be Indian Larry's. I can't see being on an Exile bike for many miles at a time.
