Exile Cycles
« on: February 03, 2010, 01:51:04 AM »

Was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with Exile Cycles?  I like the looks of some of their bikes, but I don't have 50 grand to spend on a new motorcycle.  If only I had a Nighttrain to mod out.  I like the looks of the 2005 Nighttrain on their website.  Any of you California guys see those Exile bikes out cruising?

I've always liked most of Russell Mitchell's work, but then I like minimalist stuff (which is why I bought a CVO Road King  :-\ ).  I would, however, think one could come pretty close to duplicating the look for a lot less than $50K.  A frame, two tires of the front of a 727, a sand-blasted engine and handlebars from a Schwin Spider bike and you're most of the way there.   Okay, there's more to it than that, but removing parts seems to be easier than adding them.

I don't know what his company is like to deal with, but he admits he can be a bit of a bastard at times.  With the low volume of bikes they are necessarily expensive.  Worth it?  I dunno, people pay hundreds of thousands for a piece of junk they call art, so I guess it is to them.  The only custom bikes I've seen that I'd consider paying what they asked would be Indian Larry's.  I can't see being on an Exile bike for many miles at a time.

I agree with you Russell Mitchell's work is cool, I like the look and designs.  Before I bought one, I would build it for under $10K using a used bike.

He has produced some nice looking bike,  much better than those theme things OCC builds.

With the current economy and the chopper fad passing quickly I wonder how many 50K bikes he can continue to sell? I think the end is near for Russel and many others unless they start building a custom bagger. My point is if you got a 50k bike and the mfg goes under your pretty much stuck with it when you need repairs or parts. My advice is build your own! You can do it way cheaper than a exile bike. Sucker punch sally's and Indian Larry are 2 sweet kits for much less. JMO   :2vrolijk_21:

Love Exile bikes, here's a couple of shots of an Exile style bagger I built a couple of years ago.

I remember that bike and like it now as much (if not more) as I did when you first showed it. As much as I like chrome if I could afford to have two (or more) bikes I would have to have one like that or totally blacked out. :2vrolijk_21:

Looks great, that is a nice way to build a bagger.

I like the look, so did you just scotch brite the chrome pieces? If so doesn't that cause rust? I've seen Russell doing this and always wondered.

No, I had everything HPC coated and then used scotch brite pads to scratch it. I used HPC so everything including the exhaust would be the same color and finish.

Really nice bike.....like the finish too.  How long did it take for you to get all of the chrome with a scotch brite pad?

JC, I was wondering your opinion of Exile Cycles and their bikes.  Have you dealt with them or know anyone who has? Do you ever see their bikes out and about?  Thanks.

My new Panhead...I did not build it, a good friend of mind did, but I have a few changes in mind. This bike was built from a very nice 1965 Pan, which as you know was the first year for a kick and electric start. 1948 wishbone frame and all matching numbers, black plate original Ca. bike. It still has the origanal black plate on it.
