CVOBIKER, what i didn't say inthe original post was that the lovely officer said I cant have modified pipes, they must be stock, period. If he catches me with modified pipes in the future he'll book me again (points and $350). So I guess if you have non standard pipes,  mate you will be on the chit list too. ;)
That's funny - Some of the SP in VA run modified exhaust and intakes.  Don't know what they have, 'cause the pipes "look" stock, but they sure don't sound like it.  The cops do this out of their own pocket on the bikes they are assigned.

Funny to me that the CHP singled out loud Harley's! Around here in Kentucky every wanna be with a bike "metric cruisers" from 450 to 1800cc has straight open pipes and think they sound good. They actually sound like a lawn mower with the muffler off! They cannot preform well with straight open pipes! I think they are giving us all a bad rap and bringing the man down on us! I wish they would all go back to being "The nicest people" and quit trying to act like a biker!!! JMO OK I feel Better!  :soapbox:

It amazes me to pass some of these metrics on the road that sound like long, loud, farts.  In my area, some of the loudest bikes are sport bikes with shortys or straight pipes, probably making less HP than stock.

I was pulled over a week a go for a "random breath test", while no probs with the breath the man in blue had a problem with the sound of my beloved ride. His words were "Any reason why your bike is so loud"? with no decent come back i ended up with a $150 fine (no points) and was told i would receive letter from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) soon. The lovely officer then quiped "the good people of Merewether are sick of people like you!".

Anyway, I received the letter and now must prresent the bike for a sound test from a very short list of approved testing stations within 21 days. Ok, so i'll just put the stock pipes back on for the test and then put the Bassani's back on after i think to myself, all is good hey?   UHH UHH No, today i find out that if i get caught a second time i'll cop a $350 fine and 3 points (we get 12 for a 3 year period), then if i go a third time my bike will be seized and then crushed no come backs! How about that? What sort of state is this?

I have no choice but to put the stock pipes back on, but what to do after that? I like the D & D lowcat it fits my bike but not sure how it will go for sound levels.

So theres a heads up for anyone else in NSW, look out.  >:(

We have a CHP friend in our riding group here in Sacramento and Yuba City.  He recently shared a little inside info in regards to the Harley loud Exhaust issues..  The CHP commandoes have issued orders to their state troops that they will ticket motorcycles with loud obnoxious exhaust. He said the reason stems from extreme amount of complaints from politicians and the public . Just last weekend we were talking to a guy at Guidera's in Yuba City that was recently ticketed on I80 near Dixon on Pedric Road. He is (was) running a straight Basani 2:1. He was picked out of a group of riders accelerating onto I-80. His ticket is more less a 'fix-it' ticket, I dont think fines are involved, but defiantly a PITA to deal with.. This particular CHP officer said he himself has not intentions of pulling anyone over with moderiate exhaust levels but said he wont hesitate to get the guys running straight pipes or un-baffled LOUD exhaust..  I know my opinion may piss some of you off, but i agree that some of these guys running loud pipes need to be ticketed.. Otherwise, the majority of us bikers running aftermarket exhaust will be installing our stock restrictive exhaust back and everyone of us are screwed..   Hope some of you dont bad mouth me to bad..  :o
A few years ago I owned an '03 Deuce, 88 CI, with V & H Big Shot Staggerds. They were louder than other OEM exhausts but they were "mouse quiet" compared to a guy I ran across with the same setup but with the baffles pulled out. We had to run behind him for a few miles. Even back 1/8 to 1/4 mile they were A B S O L U T E L Y  L O U D, E A R  P I E R C I N G  &  S H R I L L . I think a friend of mine called them "stupid loud".

I'm a firm believer that loud pipes saves lives (Currently running V & H true duals with Hi-ouput slipons) but I'm definitely not running straight pipes. Maybe the baffles free guys don't deserve a ticket but rather a strong slapped upside the head by the rest of the riding community.

Many years ago when visiting Drban South Africa, they had what they called a "hinder".
For misdemeanor infractios, a Judge passed sentence and a doctor passed fit to receive punishment.
Then the guilty party was given a few wacks with a paddle.

My guess is that would be more effective than even a slap upside the head.

I can relate. One of my buddies had a 01 Heritage with 95" kit heads etc and open long drag pipes. None of my other friends wanted to ride with him and a few times approaching a stop he was behind me and cracked it and it literilly made me jump of the seat of my bike. I thought someone was getting ready to rear end me! I tried over and over to tell him that he spent all that money and it would run even better with some back pressure but he would not listen. Oh well he moved and sold his bike. Same guy that put his new bike on a harbor freight scissors lift and started it, then turned around and heard his bike fall off the lift? WTF?   :nixweiss:

How does an officer test?  So three officers decide your load and its crush time?  That seems a bit over the top

remember to measure loudness you have to be a 45 degrees otherwise your measurement is screwed up with the engine pulses.

And you can't fix stupid!   :dunce: That is the whole problem, the people that run stupid loud exhaust are the people that don't give a hairy rats behind what anyone else thinks, including their friends. :sauer005:

Kraut, you could be onto something there, i saw one demonstarted tome at a HD Dealer in Munich 18 months ago, i had forgotten about them, I seem to recall it was fairly pricey though. Thanks

"Fairly pricey" is a massive understatement.  I've seen these at a few events, they don't sound that nice, and the price is simply ridiculous.

ok, they are expensive and yes, old fashioned supertrapp still sounds way better - but they are first quality pipes and electronic sound management I'm afraid will be the future, Porsche or Ferrari already went this way years ago. If they spare you only one hazzle with the local authorities the difference in price is well spent - 1.000€ are easily dumped in fines and fees ;)

Back in my youth, I drove a rally car at international level, in my case a Group 4 Escort RS1800.  Before every event we had a noise test, and we had a device made up to enable passing that.  I'm sure I could come up with something similar for a Harley, using stock HDI flapper valve parts, for a whole lot less than €2000 Hans!
