2006 103 upgrade
« on: November 03, 2022, 04:26:55 PM »

I have upgraded my 2006 103 Ultra a few years ago and it runs pretty strong still however I have been hearing some discussion about a tire shredder 110 upgrade for the 103's.

Does anyone have any personal experience or knowledge to share about this?

Also considering a six-speed tranny change ideas experience or knowledge to share about this as well.

There is nothing wrong with the way my bike performs at this time other than last weekend a 117 pulled away from when we hit 3rd gear and well the young pup is kinda rubbing it in.

I really like my old bike and have not plans on trading or selling it or replacing it we kinda have a history. Changes/upgrades should be less expensive than payments on a new bike.

I wouldn't let a 117 walking away from you be the driving factor to make a change.  There will ALWAYS be other bikes faster than yours, and yours will always be faster than other bikes.

I faced a similar situation in 2016.  At 83k miles my '06 needed a rebuild.  Jim at Metal Dragon tore it down and found the crank was seizing up.  I hemmed and hawed between an S&S crate 131, a 110 rebuild or keeping a stock CVO 103. I decided on rebuilding the 103.  Jim had the crank balanced, welded, and plugged with the crank bearing changed to Timken. The only other changes were S&S lifters, .583 cams and SuperTrapp SuperMeg 2-1 exhaust.  The bike dynoed at 98hp and 113tq.  The numbers didn't mean anything to me, but the ride did.  The bike pulls hard and strong.  No problem riding the Rockies with my wife on the back. I decided to stay stock as I tour a lot, and wanted most everything to be HD in case I needed work on the road at a dealership.  I decided against the 110 after following the woes of many of the 110 owners here. I couldn't be happier with how everything came out.

In 2012 Jim at Metal Dragon put in a Baker DD6 speed transmission.  I think it's one of the best modifications as it drops the engine speed at cruise.  Sometimes I forget I have it and surprise myself with the extra gear!

Hope this helps.

Coming from someone with your reputation does mean a lot for sure. I am mostly one up  as she rides her own. The bike pulls really well with no issues with mods I already have. Baker six will be my next upgrade. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

The CVO 103 has a unique set of heads that respond well to what amounts to not a lot of changes. The large chamber does require attention and a plan in place to get the compression up. Stock they are at 8.5:1 or thereabouts.

Build for reliability. Reasonable power gains can be had with reliability. Take it up to a 106, gear cams, plate and pump, maybe intake/injectors. Many builds can be found here. Cams depend on riding style.

Finally dug out the Dyno sheet from when I did some upgrades in 2010. I think I just going to stay right here it is dependable and loads of fun. Prob be better served to go with a six speed tranny. I do appreciate input.

I did a Baker DD6 kit in 2009. I liked having the extra gear and at the time Baker offered 3 different comp sprockets to change the overall drive ratio. The standard sprocket dropped the the RPM's about 400 at cruise, option B about 200 rpm and option C about even with a stock 5 speed. At that time Baker also offered two different 1st gear ratios.

I opted for the standard 1st gear and sprocket and shortly after that I changed the sprocket to option B.
While still under or just out of warranty I called Baker about the a shifting issue, they let me wait until off season and I sent it back. They rebuilt (or possibly just replaced, it looked brand new) and shipped it back with all new installation parts, shipping on their dime both ways. Customer service at that time was very good.

The kit was $2,000 in 2009 and I did the work.

Overall I like it but I doubt I would do it again, especially now that it costs over $3K

If you can do it yourself you'll save some money.
And I would recommend reading through at least this thread. (there are others)
