I miss my old bike
« on: December 30, 2008, 09:08:17 PM »

I traded my 2007 Road King Classic for my 2009 SE Ultra.  Don't get me wrong, I like the SE Ultra, but I am having a lot of regrets about getting rid of the RK Classic.  If I can swing it, I'm thinking about trying to buy it back from the dealer and having both bikes...assuming they still have it.  The photo on their website has a "HOLD" tag hanging from the handlebars.  Am I out of my mind?  I didn't have regrets like this getting rid of my last girlfriend.  Yeah, I know, I would have if I could ride her as long and hard as my Road King.  Seriously, does everyone go through this?  I didn't have these kinds of regrets with any of my other bikes.  Here's a few pics.  What do you folks think?  Am I crazy?

You can never have too many bikes.  The problem is, if you can still buy it back from them, you'll pay considerably more for it then they gave you on trade-in.  Unless they cut you a special deal and sell it back to you for what they gave you...always worth asking if you really want it back.

I know it is personal opinion but the 07 RK in that color is a classic beauty.

If you can afford both ...do it.

I know they will stick it to me.  No matter what I tell them, they will think that I made a deal to sell it to my friend that tried to buy it from them.

If they are any kind of dealer they will help you out.

Your Ruby is a great bike but you can always use the RK for Short rides.

That's a nice looking bike, and many here have more then one. However for me (and my obsessive OCD) my income doesn't support two bikes like it doesn't support two wives/girlfriends. :D :D If you can do (afford) it go for it. :2vrolijk_21:

I don't know about anyone else, but yes I've gone through it a few times.  The first time it happened my wife thought I was going to start crying when I got home from dropping the bike off at the dealership.  The last time was when i bought my SEEG2.  That time I not only missed the old bike, but I was thoroughly pissed at the lack of quality on the new one and seriously considered getting the deal canceled.

Some folks change bikes like I change underwear, and I doubt they get emotionally involved.  I tend to hang on to my bikes for at least 5 years, so to me it's almost like putting down a pet dog when it comes time.  Yup, it sounds hokey but that's the way it is.

If you can swing it, bring it back home, remove the windshield, and use it as your short haul cruiser.

My local HD CVO buddy said one of the rules of the brotherhood is "never get rid of a Harley that's paid for." I plan to implement that if at all possible and I own the only one I have (so far). Storage would be the only issue but I would rather put it on loan to a friend to ride (and store in his garage) with visitation rites if I do get another bike.

Just my $.02

I do it partly like you do Jerry.  Have always liked keeping them for awhile (or longer).  Make them my own.  This doesn't count the days when we were kids and couldn't afford anything that would actually run too long or when the goal was to thrash it just for the hell of it.  But once the time came that decent bikes were actually within reach the process of getting it how I wanted was an enjoyment in itself.

With all that being so the time leading up to a sale of a bike (or car) I'd spent a lot of time could be rough.  Grumpy.  Second thoughts.  The whole range of motocycular psychoses.  Once something has left though it's gone.  No more second thoughts or looking over the shoulder.  Old girl friends work pretty much the same way too :huepfenlol2: .
