Blew my wad on a new table lift right or wrong
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:54:46 PM »

I have wanted a table lift for as long as I can remember. In the last couple years I have looked at dozens of them from $600 - $2500! I have looked at so many for so long my brain has turned to mush! Today I finally committed to "The Complete Motorcycle Lift" from the Complete Hydraulic Service & Sales Inc. This lift has everyting included which many do not. All the extras add up quick. I get the side extensions, wheel clamp & a jack all for one price $799.95. I just decided to go for it right or wrong and see what happens! Good thing I am single so I don't have to explain this credit card purchase!!!! I will let y'all know how it works out once I receive it. They are shipping to a local truck terminal where i will pick it up. Will be around the 17th of Nov.

Shipping was $180. I could have picked it up and would had had to pay Indiana sales tax. I figured the tax and gas would be $100 so I could have saved $80 but would spend my Saturday going to get it. Lucky if I get one Sat. off a month these days so my Saturdays are dear to me! I didn't think an 18 wheeler could get in my driveway so I am having it sent to the local truck terminal and will pick it up in my truck.

WOW. Funny how you get ideas from this site, the only reason I don't have a table is it would be in the way. Never thought about recess.......now all I gotta do is figure how to cut through 8"s of concrete.

That is a very nice work table.  I owned several Boss Hoss bikes and bought the Heavy Duty Electric Table from Handy quite a few years ago...its the best tool in the garage.  Now I need one for the auto...

Yes...I had an air model and sold it.  I was not comfortable with the weight of the Boss Hoss on it so I purchased the electric model.  Also the air model was very jerky going up and down...the electric is very smooth both ways and also very quiet when going down (Uhmmm...up and going down, I like this thread).  Now back to the question. Its worth the extra money...also if you call them ask them if they have any blemished (be careful) models.  I saved several hundred dollars because the table top was replaced due to shipping damage and the color wasn't exactly the same.

Take friends.  That sucker is going to be really, really heavy.

I have a harbor freight lift.  I ended up replacing the wheel clamp with one of those chocks that you ride the bike onto.  Works a lot better.  I've been parking my bike right on the lift for a couple of years now, saves lots of space.  Just ride on and step off.

Update: I ordered on Nov. 3rd. They said it would be at their place on the 14th and they would then ship to me. No word on the 14th so I called on the 15th and was told it did not arrive and would not until Friday the 18th. I called this afternoon and decided I would just pick it up tomorrow from them instead of shipping to cincy. Again it did not come in. now they tell me Monday the 21st. So my work and family schedule is packed for the next 2 weeks and I don't know how I will have time to pick it up. Patience is not my Strong suit and its worn thin. I hate it when people advertise items on sale and don't even have them. CHIT CHIT CHIT!  :cry2:

Sometimes people quote a date you would like to hear instead of a realistic one. I would rather hear 3 weeks and have it show up in 2 instead of hearing 2 weeks and have to wait for it for 4. Years ago I ordered a car and they told me 12 weeks....Didn't say a word and waited....at 12 weeks I asked where it was and they told me another month...waited the month only to be told another 2-3 weeks.....boy was I pissed......

Very nice.  You can do many things on a good table lift.  Most of them even involve a motorcycle ::) .

Then you can blow the balance of your wad recessing it into the floor

Very cool! A recessed Handy bike lift. Reckon I'll need to rent me a concrete saw and jack hammer. Last thing I wanna do is dump my bike off the lift!

Wonder how the Titan 1500-XLT works out? While I would dig having a Handy lift in my shop, the Titan might fill the bill.

UPDATE: My lift came in and I will be picking it up at Complete Hydraulic Service in the morning! I decided not to wait till next wed. for it as my schedule is booked. I am excited and can't wait to get it tomorrow! I will post some pics. It was 61 here today and I was able to get a ride in to rabbit hash and the big loop back home! Felt Great!

Ref. the in-floor lift:  My first thought was I'm doing that when I add on to my garage next spring.  But if the wheel chock still sticks up in the way, I'm not sure it would be much of a benefit.  Very cool idea though.

Made the drive to Franklin Indiana this morning, to complete Hydraulic Service and sales inc. They were waiting for me and quickly loaded my lift into my pickup with a fork lift. It was 108 miles up so it cost me about $50 gas for the round Trip. They refunded my shipping fee and did not charge me Tax! Sweet! The lift was well packed. Everything was there and was easy to assemble. I unloaded it with my BSR Beefie a floor jack, dolly, some boards and some hillybilly know how!

I like the lift.
Looks nice and is beefy.

I first put my bike on and then noticed I did not put the extension on.
I took off the bike.
Removed the vice and installed the extension into the short position.
Then reinstalled the vice.
Put the bike on and you can see from the pictures that the rear wheel is past the drop out panel.
So I took the vice off and took the extension off, then reinstalled the vice. Enough!
You don't need the extension unless you have a long bike or chopper.
It will take a over 100" bike with extension all the way out.
Put that in the garage with the side for future use.
Stored the side extensions for future use.

Here are some pictures.

I had the same extensions on my lift seemed like it was  quite a stretch for me to work on the bike so I had mine cut in half worked a lot better for me.

Very nice lift, how does that new HD oil catch pan work? Thought about getting one but wondered if the oil splashes or not when you let it go?

I just ordered a Wheeldock for my lift. I got it direct thru their web site. I also got the spacer kit for smaller tires in case I get another Dyna.

Not to hijack this thread but . . .

The H-D oil catch pan is a nice item. $29.95 MSRP.  It's low profile enough that you can reach under the bike while it's on the Jiffy Stand. Able to be moved and adjusted so that it sits under the drainage but stays out of the way.

It will accommodate a primary chain case cover. Oil drains into the center hole, then you can seal it up and stand it on end for storage. (I hose mine down w/ a pressure washer to get the extra oil off.) Recessed areas for your nuts. End cap allows you to drain the used oil into a container for recycling. Beats the hell out of trying to improvise some sort of catch pan that's low profile and will fit under the bike while having the capacity to stow the drainage.

Since topic is now that big HD catch pan:

Have seen them hanging on the wall the bike shop.  Was concerned they were shallow enough that falling hot liquids would hit the inner surface and splash over the side.  Has that been a problem for anyone?

Since topic is now that big HD catch pan:

Have seen them hanging on the wall the bike shop.  Was concerned they were shallow enough that falling hot liquids would hit the inner surface and splash over the side.  Has that been a problem for anyone?

No, not that much of a splash.  Just that the top inner surface was shallow enough that draining liquids might splash over the side and make another small mess to be wiped out.  My old $2.99 plastic catch pan is deep (and cheap) so all the splach from impact stays inside the pan.

A wider pan might be nice at times.  And this piece is proudly manufactured by the nymphs and virgins of Harley.  So it was a consideration once I'd seen it hanging on the wall at the bike shop.  Just didn't want to mess with it if liquids too easily hit its top surface and splashed over.

I bought one of these Harley pans that just sits on the wall.  Everytime I do an oil change, I too just reach of the small 6 qt cheapo deal that's alot easier to clean afterwards.

That's what I was concerned would happen here.  The Harley pan isn't what I'd haul to the recycler's tank at the parts store anyway.  Have a catch pan that stands up under cages when on their lift.  So the bike drainings get poured out of the cheapo deep pan in to that roll around catch tank anyway.  Hey, I just saved the cost of the Harley pan!  I should actually think about stuff more often...  ???

I just save all of my washerfluid gallon jugs, and use a funnel. I put the oil pan on the hook of my over head retractible shop light, and center the funnel in the jug under and let it drip dry overnight.  You could never do that with the Harley thing, and you'd end up wasting a rag or quite a bit of paper towels to clean that out afterwards. Waste not, dont'cha know!

Anyway, after I fill up 4 to 6 jugs, I just bring them up to the local oil change place. They are happy to take them.

Flush with floor lift....I thought this was cool, but was concerned about losing lifting height.  If a retracted lift is 7" tall, that means it must sit 7" deep into the floor to be flush.  When fully extended upward, your lift will be 7" lower than it was when sitting on the garage floor.  Example: Handy lifts raise up 30", so subtract 7", leaving a lifting height of 23".  Just something to consider.

The wheel dock is mounted. I just got it all done. Ready for some wrenching on my bike. I used two 1/2" stove bolts in the base under the tire and I used two 3/8" bolts thru the cross member into exisiting holes in my lift. It is rock solid! In and Out of the wheel dock is easy however I still cannot get the back wheel over the lift by myself. I had to get the BSR involved. I think I need a longer approach ramp. Next project!!!!!!

My lift is different.  But I just ride my bike on.  Let the motor do the work.
Mine stays parked on the lift when it is in the garage.  Ride on, step off.  Been doing that c couple of years now.
It gets exciting when it's been raining out, the lift tends to get a little slick.  Pucker factor 4.

I'd be ashamed to put a picture of my hoopty lift in the same thread with all these nice ones.
It's just a plain jane Harbor Freight lift (the foot operated one) with stock front wheel chock replaced by the 39.00 Harbor Freight wheel chock.
It does the job though.

I don't worry about tripping over the lift.  I tend to avoid that due to the big azz motorcycle sitting on it.
I guess it might be a problem for the wife when I've got the bike out somewhere.  I'll sink it into the floor if she'll dig the hole =P

Happy New Year

It's the W-1500. I got the black jack also w/ it , it's rated at 1500 lbs and it lifts 42", with the sides on it it's 51" wide. I think it's a good lift for the $$$ made nice, no shipping cost and came boxed up real good not a scratch on it !!

I just ordered a Wheeldock for my lift. I got it direct thru their web site. I also got the spacer kit for smaller tires in case I get another Dyna.

Why?  Just curious as the lift had one, right??  :nixweiss:

Yes there was a vice. However it takes 2 people to put the bike in, one to hold up, one to close the vice. Then was still nerves about letting go until I got it strapped down. With the wheeldock I roller up and she locks right in solid. Then I can put my strap on. I got a short rachet strap from wheeldock. This makes it easier. I still have a road block. Can't get the bike up by myself. Tried my darndest but only got back wheel to top of ramp and dead stop! Had to have a little assit from behind. I got 2 options. if alone I can put the sides on and ride it up. Wouldn't dare try it without them or make a longer ramp which is what I am planning. I am going to have a friend make me a 4ft ramp and I should be good to go!!!!  FACE

FACE

Why don't you just drive the bike onto the lift?  That is what I do.  I have me wife work the vise and make sure I am aligned properly.

I drive my bike onto the lift (with the side extensions in place).  Before driving onto the ramp, I have the wheel vice open only slighty wider than the front tire.  I get off the bike on the crank side, hold the bike steady w/ one hand and crank the wheel clamp.  If the clamp is only open slightly wider that the wheel., then the bike isnt going to fall over.  The techs at my HD shop do the same procedure, except they push the bike onto the ramp.

Man you guys make it sound so easy. Let's see: I would ride it on with sides in place. Its 7" off the floor and I don't want to pull up and put a foot down miss the ramp and then its dear John. I am getting ready to install my bag speakers and need to remove the tank. This calls for starting the bike and pulling fuel pump fuse and run till dead. Now how do I ride onto the ramp. My garage is under my house and I will not and don't start my bike in the garage. It would be ok to ride up but not sure what time it takes to kill after pulling fuel pump. Just an example.

Ok Holding the bike while tightening the vise: I have 14" monkey bars and my reach is not that far and stability is an issue anyway. You guys are talk to a guy who has lost his bike of a floor jack before with the rear tire/shocks off and fender/struts newly painted half on. I like to think that I learned a little something in the last 20 years. What works for you guys is great. I have to go with what feels safe to me because this bike is my baby and I don't want to inflect injury in the garage. I have in the past and it will flat out make you sick. Its done and I am happy with what I have. Good luck with yours......FACE

I added some anti-skid on the ramp, after slipping a bit with wet tires last year, but I wonder how tough cleaning oil and stuff off that anti-skid will be. being right under the bike in the center section might be difficult.

I purchased a pack of 10 pieces (6"x24") From Grainger P/N 12E886. It cost me $42.40 total w/tax. I am sure you can find other deals and maybe cheaper. I thought the pre cut would look nicer since my corner cutting skills are not that great.  :nixweiss: That was enough to cover the lift and ramp and 3 pieces on my jack. When I was looking thru the Grainger book they had several different kinds and some of it was double the cost of what I bought. Good luck.

I am not too worried about oil spills because I got the big flat HD oil pan. I'm sure sooner or later I will spill some.
I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Main thing I wanted to do was protect me from slips and slides when loading and unloading.

Nice lift!

I would love to order one....but concerned about unloading it.  Do you think a couple of 6' 225lb men could unload it from the truck without busting a nut?

Is the 625lbs in one crate or a couple banded together?

Thanks

I moved my Handy BOB 1500 with my wife (5'7", 135 lbs).  The trick for us was to use a floor jack and Crapsman motorcycle lift to do all of the heavy lifting.    :nixweiss:

Neutral drop  :nixweiss:
Slid the crate out as far as I could until it started to tip. Put the floor jack with blocks on it under crate. Apply a little lift with jack and pull crate to about 6" from end of tail gate. Slowly let jack down and lower crate on to blocks on each side of the jack. Then remove some blocks from jack and again lift the crate off side blocks, change to shorter blocks then lower until crate and repeat until crate is as close to floor as you can get it. floor jack is about 6" high. Now move jack to crate just off the end of tailgate and repeat lift with blocks then pull truck out and lower jack until crate sits on side blocks same as the first end. I used 2x6" boards on the sides at lowest point and then just pushed them over . It was a suttle drop. Takes about 15 minutes. I have several 6x6" blocks and 4x6" and smaller. Once on the ground open the crate and unpack everything you can. Lift is upside down and my nephew showed up just in time to help me flip the crate over and set the lift correctly. I have a bad back and did not strain myself using this methoed..... FACE

I bought a Direct lift table from a MC shop that was going out of business. They had listed 4 lifts on Craigslist. I was the first person to show up and see lifts, I got a lift table that the owner had used to assemble frame up builds on, he claimed lift table may have been cycled up and down perhaps 40 or 50 times since new, judging by how clean it was, I believe it to be true. I got the side extensions with it, which I don't care to use, and I got a center stand Fat Jack jack which is awesome for rear wheel service...lift table has the the drop out rear section, dolly pulling handle to move lift around the shop more easily, while looking at the lifts he had , I called a good friend that owns an Indie shop, he dropped what he was. Doing, came over and took 2 of the othe lifts, a new tire machine and a huge compressor, for helping sell all this equipment for the seller I was able to negotiate my purchase for $350. Best motorcycle related purchase I have ever made...my friend with Indie bike shop has a couple of handy lifts and a couple direct lifts...his opinion is that he prefers the direct lifts......my only complaint about the Direct lift is that it is black...my eyesight not being what it once was makes it a bit hard to see small parts and or tools, plus it doesn't reflect shop lifts up towards underside of the bike....it gets better ....I was able to have my friend that bought the other lifts, pick mine and deliver it to my garage....
I also ride my bikes on, get of and while holding bike with one one hand, reach forward and tighten vise on front wheel....one bikes has 16" apes, and I have never had any issuses securing the bike.....I also Strap
bike to lift ....to avoid it ever coming off lift
