Installing the New J&M 250w Amp. in a CVO Road Glide.
« on: April 27, 2010, 05:04:12 PM »

Installed the J&M 7.25" speakers and later found out they were incompatible with my previously installed Titan amp.
:(   So, Shawn at DrVtwin sent me one of the first J&M amps for the Road Glide fairing.  Others have written about wanting to upgrade speakers without upgrading the amp.  Trust me, the amp is worth it!   :2vrolijk_21:  While you can get better sound by upgrading speakers, the HD head unit just does not have enough power to give you any dynamic range out of the speakers.  Install of the amp was night and day better.

Picture 1. is a shot of the J&M Kit and their install:  What follows is my install.  Total time (including cleaning everything I could get to) was 2 1/2 hours.  That's going very slowly as I am no mechanic.

First step is to remove the seat and lift tank so that you can install the power lead and ground.   To raise the tank, there are two torque screws at the front of the tank and two at the rear.  You will also need to disconnect the fuel line under the left side of the tank.  To avoid having to remove the tank altogether, have a (good) friend hold the tank up for you.  Under the tank there is a plastic container running the length of the frame backbone.  While the friend holds the tank, it is easy to open the container and run the power lead from the batter through the length of the container and into the fairing.  This pic shows the battery area before beginning.  The ecm and other electronics must be removed to get to the battery terminals.

Before getting to the battery, pull the main fuse under the left side cover.  It's the big orange one on the right.

Update:  The alarm will likely sound when you pull the fuse.  To its credit, it's a nasty sound!  Mine switched off after I turned the ignition on and off.  FUZZNUTS told me his did not but it will go off after about 30 seconds.

As mentioned above, getting to the battery requires pulling the ecm and other electronic parts shown above.  It's relatively simple but be careful not to bend any connectors.  Under the electronics there is a cover whch is like a jigsaw pussle to remove.  Be patient here.  This pic shows the battery fully exposed.

Here is the pic showing the two rear torque bolts to raise the tank.  You do not need to touch the center bolt.  Once power lead is connected  and run through the fairing to the front of the bike, you can re tighten the four bolts (two here and two in front) resecuring the tank.

Now you're ready to install the brackets to hold the amp in place.  First install the lower bracket to the amp as shown.  Do not tighten bolts now as you may need some play later....

Next is to remove the fairing:  Fairing Removal and Installation.    Always first cover the front fender!!!!!!!

Here is a pic of the inside of my fairing with the HID ballasts for the headlights.  No problem fitting both with the new amp.  The padding shown was supplied with the J&M 7.25" speakers.

Now you're ready to install the upper bracket to the right side of the radio support and the inboard right speaker scew.  There are two upper brackets included so you can use the amp with either 5.25" or 7.25" speakers.  Have to say that if you're going to the trouble of removing the fairing, upgrade your speakers.   :nixweiss:

This pic shows the amp connected to its brackets.  Note the lower bracket attaches to the right inner fairing support screw.   Now you're ready to begin connecting the dots...  I mean wires.  This pic shows the power lead already connected on the top of the amp.

The directions that come with the amp make the connections very simple.  This pic shows the amp wired.  Test now before reasembling the fairing.  Don't forget to reattach the fuel line.  (Don't ask me why I know this.)   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

Result is fabulous!  Rode to the office today with earplugs in and still had great sound!   :huepfenjump3:   :bananarock:
