Title: Two riders in the past two weeks
Post by: Big Dog on August 03, 2011, 06:02:41 PM
I read a newspaper online from a city I moved from last year because of my family still there and a chapter full of friends I left. Two riders from this city, one I knew personally from my chapter, have died in the last two weeks on their bikes because of this......in each case a woman was turning left in front of their motocycles. WTF?? When will people wake up out there. I ride assuming a cage will cut me off, especially through intersections, maybe too cautious but I drove 18 wheelers and I drove as if everyone would blow through stop signs or yield signs in front of me so I guess I've kept it in my head while on my bike, it's even bright orange with bright a$$ lights!! I don't know, if it ever happens to me and I live, I'm gonna beet 'em with my bloody stump!! :soapbox:

It's obvious....they think they are the only ones on the road....  :sauer005: I had a lady drift into my lane while she was on her cell phone (and our state has a law against that)  :rifle: ...had a car in front of me so i had to back off and she just acted like she was doing a normal merge....my rider instructor i had way back when did an excellent job in beating it into us to assume the cage driver will do anything and helped me create a fairly decent defensive approach when Im riding.. :2vrolijk_21:

Most drivers subconsciously think about the most common risk which is the automobile. Even though their eyes may see the motorcycle it's not registering in their brains.

Be extra defensive for this reason.

Sorry about this news and your loss, Big Dog.  Don is correct, I believe.  Cagers are never going to notice us sufficiently.  Just yesterday a woman turn left in front of me.  Had I not been going the speed limit, I would have been worse than toast.

It's no different here in Europe.  You have to ride like you are invisible to other road users, and always assume they haven't seen you.

I guess it's the chance we take every time we throw a leg over the seat. Thanks all for your comments, always great to read. :2vrolijk_21:

Had a caged driver try to hit me today.  I had just crossed the bridge at 101 and Calaveras Blvd off 238 headed East entering Milpitas.  The light was green, with three lanes.  I was in lane 3.  Also, I spotted the car sitting at the light, looking to turn right onto Calaveras (And my lane) from the offramp.  I also noticed the nice gentleman behind the wheel did not look at me as he pulled right into my path.  I was ready for him and managed to evade.  That's twice this week.  Grrrrrrrrrrrr.  I guarantee it scared him more than me.  I was right next to his door as he turned, and I gunned those rather loud Rineharts....He's at home doing laundry right now...;-)

This is nothing new, been going on since way before we were riding.  My dad was hospitalized when a bread truck made a last minute left hand turn in front of him on his '39 knucklehead. Busted him up pretty good.  Big difference now is the increased numbers of cages & bikes.  Lots of reasons they don't see us or judge how far away or how fast we're travelling, but with the added distraction of cell phones while driving, it's becoming much more dangerous.  spyder

Since getting back on 2 wheels back in the spring of '06 from a 20 years of driving only cars/trucks...I have become a much more aware cage driver than I was when I didn't ride. I have had bikes going WAY above the speed limit going through intersections when I want to turn left...lucky for them I didn't!
