I'm in Texas and here it's not uncommon to hear trucks going down the road that are fitted with cannon like exhausts. Just the other day I was driving with my wife and we literally could not hear each other or carry on a conversation because we were beside one of these trucks. We also go jogging with our dogs a lot and one of our running paths is along side a main road. I've never cringed when a bike has passed but when these trucks pass us my ears are almost ringing.

Honestly, though I don't even mind the sound but everytime I hear one I'm thinking "And they want to put a sound law on motorcycles?!" These trucks and sometimes cars are louder than a lot of bikes I've heard and it's hard to imagine these kinds of situation are only prevalent in Texas. We don't have any motorcycle sound laws (yet) but I dread the day when that happens because there's going to be a lot of upset motorcyclists who believe they are being unfairly and prejudicially targeted.

It will only further the divide between motorcylists and cages and will set back any progress that's been made with sharing the road. I'm an AMA member any my suggestions is to become a member and get involved. The AMA is doing a lot of good stuff to help preserve our rights but unless bikers continue to unite we'll continue to see our rights stipped away simply because we're on two wheels and not four.

Did anyone check to see that Howie didn't either A) go on a shooting spree downtown at City Hall or B) Go into vapor lock over this news.  Although we know Hoist is never one to be outspoken... Cough cough cough, I expected at least a respectful disagreement with this news out of him by now.

Unfortunately, this is the new name of the game.  Milwaukee (of all places!) actually has a similar law on the books where not only cops, BUT ANY CITIZEN can enter a complaint against you.  You never even know it until the ticket arrives in the mail.

The AMA fights against these laws rigorously. Hopefully many of the riders on this forum are members.  If not, consider joining TODAY.

Cheers!

That's just way too much power being given to the public. I see a lot of abuse and unjustified complaints occuring. I believe that law goes into effect January 1, 2009 and dictates that anyone who believes a motorcycle is too loud can file a complaint and take the owner of the motorcycle to court without ever having to present any sound meter evidence.

What I find to be really ridiculous about this little attempt to single out one small segment of a huge issue is that the bike must have an 80 dB muffler certification stamp, and if you have ever stood on a busy street corner in NYC you don't have to be told that the overall noise level is well above 80 dB.  I swear some of the people there shout louder than that, and when you add all the trucks, buses, taxi's, etc. the din is enough to make you cover your ears.  How would you even hear a motorcycle in the midst of all that?

Oh well, there is an easy way around the whole thing.  Keep the stock mufflers with the 80 dB compliance statement stamped on them and recore them with baffles from Fullsac.  For those who threw the stock mufflers away, you can purchase my CVO Touring Mufflers for the nominal fee of $2995 plus shipping (who says I never learned anything from the MoCo).

Not at all spyder, some of the folks on this site have taught me that this is just free market capitalism.  No gouging involved.  (Hey, if it's good enough for Harley and their dealers, who am I to argue?)

By EPA stickers, are they talking about the fine print stamped on the actual mufflers?  Whay NYC worker is actually going to bend down (if they can) and read that?  Even if it is an older muffler with a date on it, without running the plate, how will they know if the mufflers are the right ones?
What year did they start marking the mufflers? There is always an exclusion for antiques because of the ability of getting the correct parts after so many years.  I doubt these bozos in Manhattan have any clue about anything beyond "now we can have lobster at out city council meetings" without feeling guilty and the bikers will pay.
So even if the bike is a legal beagle, they still are going to tow ,make you pay storage, the fines to get it back,  and then fight it.  It's a case of assumed guilt which is plain wrong.

Get the $24 dollars back and give it back to the Native Americans, no great loss there.  Nice island casino.

Actually Florida has long since had statutes dealing with motorcycle mufflers and noise.  They just haven't been enforced.  Well, actually they have but only selectively.  Last year a community right down the road was ticketing riders for loud pipes--but that was because the idiots were riding past a senior high-rise building and using it as a sound reflector....revving up their bikes to listen to the echo.  Big fun for them and completely annoying to the old folks.  Got all riders some bad press for a month.

http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/laws/result.asp?state=FL

[edit]  Hmmmm.  Might be some wiggle room.  Depends on the exact definition of "excessive or unusual noise." The FL statues from the ".gov" website aren't quite so specific:

The 2008 Florida Statutes

 Title XXIII
MOTOR VEHICLES Chapter 316
STATE UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL View Entire Chapter

316.272  Exhaust systems, prevention of noise.--

(1)  Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation, including muffler, manifold pipe, and tailpiping to prevent excessive or unusual noise. In no event shall an exhaust system allow noise at a level which exceeds a maximum decibel level to be established by regulation of the Department of Environmental Protection as provided in s. 403.061(11) in cooperation with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. No person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a vehicle on a highway.

(2)  The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes or smoke.

(3)  A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.
