Title: Terry Components?
Post by: Wrongway on April 14, 2006, 08:11:07 PM
Does anyone have experience with this setup? A friend gave me the info, but I come to the "Experts" for advice before I spend my limited  :'( funds.

Interesting, auto adjust for changes in pipes and cams, etc.  Does anyone use this and can verify it works as advertised.

One problem i see with it is it only uses 1 o2 sensor so your only reading 1 cylinder unless you had a 2 into 1 pipe and put it far enough downstream which would also have problems of its own as o2 should be close to the exhaust port....

For what it's worth, here's my take on the Terry unit:

Twin tek's new setup does use 2 o2 sensors, however i belive its like
$800.00 Dont know about the zippers yet though..Splicing and soldering wires for a piggyback device seems well kinda hack to me.. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Zippers will be a plug and play system like it is now. It will be ready somethime this summer. They are working out a few bugs in the system now as we speak. I agree with Jerry I WILL NOT CUT AND SPLICE INTO MY FACTORY HARNESS. It may be OK for now but the chance for problems down the road is there.

DAWG,

Couple dumb questtions.  The zippers setup will be two O2 sensors as well as closed loop.  Will it work with a RT or do I need to change over to a Thundermax.  Thx,

Steve

I put the Terry Components Terminal Velocity II on my 03 SERK at the same time I did the S&S570 cams.  I went with it mainly because it's much less money than the others, around $400 from Directparts.com.  Had to weld in a bung in the rear pipe and solder the wires into the harness, which is no big deal.  My bike's out of warranty anyway and I plan to keep it many years, so that's no problem for me.
My bike has an SE air cleaner and Rinehart true duals with no factory downloads.  After about 300 + miles the bike runs great.  At first it was a little rough but kept getting better each time I rode. It was running very well within 50 miles of riding, but got better as time went on. Based on my experiences so far, I'd do it again in a minute.  Like I said, it's $3-400 less than the other alternatives and on my bike seems to work very well.  I'm sure a dual sensor might work a little better, but I guess it depends on what you want out of it and how much you can spend.  For me, this does the job at a lower cost than the others.

I need to add a little more to my previous post.  To make a long story short, yesterday my TVII unit crapped out on me.  I talked to Keith Terry today and I'm going to send it back to them to be checked out.  Bike ran so bac it would barely get out of my driveway.  I put my DFO back on and it ran fine.
For now I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt and see what they come up with , but I've seen a couple of other posts where others have had the same problem.  Works fine for a couple of months and then quits.  And believe me, if it does that on a trip, it's bad enough that you'll be getting towed.  I rode 1/4 mile from home today and wasn't sure I'd get back without getting a truck and trailer or pushing it.

With the terry unit you can twist two xtra wires together that are provided on the unit and you have the unit bypassed for a quick fix in an emergency.

That's what they claim, but I tried connecting the two wires to bypass it and it didn't make any difference.  I had to phyically detach all the wiring to get it to quit affecting the ECM.  They should have just received my unit today so it may be a few days before I hear what was wrong with it.  I may leave my DFO installed when I get the TV unit back and just set all of the DFO pots to "0" so if the TV unit fails again I can cut the wires and reset the DFO and keep going.
It's not a pleasant thought to be stranded due to an add on device, when another cheaper alternative will work more reliably.

skippy,

Just a thought here - how did you have the wires tied in to your bike wiring?  Solder, or crimp connectors, or taps?  If they don't find anything wrong with the TV unit, you may have had a bad connection.  If you were using those blue taps that you squeeze with a pair of pliers, they are famous for this.  Preferred method is solder, next best method is heat sealed crimp connectors.

Not yet.  I sent it to them and they told me they are having their engineer look into it.  Hopefully I'll hear something soon.

Terry sent me a new unit to use.  I put it on and the bike ran pretty well from startup on.  Much better than the first unit I put on.  The first one, the bike really ran rough for quite a while, but got better as time went on.  This new one it ran very well from the start.  I've heard that some of the problems have been with the larger bore engines, but my unit wouldn't even power on when it quit.  They still have not told me what happened to it but they said they'd let me know when they find out.
So far, so good.
