Milwaukee 8 117cu.in. motor is louder than the 107
« on: November 09, 2018, 10:14:35 AM »

Yesterday I took delivery of my 2019 CVO Limited in Magnetic Grey Fade.   I love this bike.   Rode it home in the dark cold and it's strong and comfortable and the heated seat and grips worked perfectly.   I also added the stage two amp and speakers (which I can't believe it wasn't on there already).   I had a 2018 Street Glide Special with the 107 M8 motor, just for the summer,  as I was waiting for this beast.

With all that said......I can't believe how much more engine noise this 117 puts out versus that VERY quiet 107.    When I first rode that 107, after coming off a 2012 CVO Ultra with the Twin Cam 110,  I found that 107 to be so quiet.   So, naturally, I expected this 117 to be as quiet...NOPE.

Don't get me wrong....it's still quieter than the 110  (sounded like there was a can of bolts flying around in the motor), but not nearly as quiet as the 107.

Anyone else notice this?   My mechanic even noticed it.   It was the first 117 he had set up.   It runs great, and I'm not going to do anything about it, but I was just making the observation.   I was really impressed with the lack of engine noise coming from that 107.    I wonder if has something to do with the bigger cam in this 117?

 Thoughts?

Thanx in advance,

I traded a ‘16 CVO Strt Glide on my 2019 and I too was surprised at how much valvetrain noise the bike has.   With all of the hype surrounding the M8 engine I was expecting the engine to be super quiet...  Not the case.     Your idea about the camshaft may be correct?     I do plan to listen to another 117 to make sure that mine is not unusually loud when I have it on for 1k service.

I also bought a 2019 Magnetic Gray Fade Ultra and have noticed a lot of valve train nose, I have not changed the exhaust and I did on my 2016 110 Ultra so with the quieter exhaust maybe that’s why I am noticing the loud valve train noise.

I upgraded my '18 RGU 107" to the stage 3 114".   Definitely more valve train noise, and has noticeably more vibration, too.

The added vibration your feeling is the added HP/TQ. Your making a lot more power equals more vibration. Most likely at half throttle your making as much power as a stock motor at full throttle.

It even vibrates more at idle.

The thing that concerns me is that (Correct me if I am off base!) Noise = lash.    If components of the valve-train are rattling around then things are bumping into eachother.    I would think that this could mean premature wear or lifter failures (ala Twin Cam 110!)

The M8 was, from what I hear, extremely quiet when it debuted in 2017 due to the reduction in valve-train components.  Now just a few years into production - we have noise...   Not looking forward to mechanical problems in the future on my $43,000.00 toy!

Have you been able to do this yet? I have one due on today. I’m trading my 2017 SG in with the 114 in it. I sure don’t want to go down this AND the possible sumping issue road....

No  Unfortunately the bike is covered up for the Ohio Winter.   Planning to haul it down to Ft Myers Beach for Christmas and then to Daytona in March but there probably wont be much riding it for a while.   I am still 500 miles from my 1K service.

Maybe it will quiet down a little after some more miles and after the break in oil is removed and some fresh Syn 3 is in the crankcase!    :nixweiss:

Ok. Thank you for the reply. PM me when you’re in the Daytona area if you want to meet up and ride.  :drink:

WE may be in Daytona for Bike week too.....and I'm hoping the motor quiets a bit once it's broken in.   As my original post says.....that 2018 107" was super quiet.....so I assumed this one would be.   Not really even close.

I can assure you that it will not get quieter with more miles.  Wishful thinking!

Picked my Mako up today. Rode it 100 miles home. Did the 50 mph for the first 50 miles. I did notice more ticking at idle and  lower speeds but once up to speed it seemed fine.  :nixweiss:

All of my concerns faded away once I started the ride home. This is a sweet ride.  :drink:

The badge in the seat is non forgiving. If not for that, the seat would be fine for now IMO.

I did have Reinhart slip ons added before I left but that was it. Nice deep tone/rumble. Shifting and finding neutral was the best by far of any bike I have owned.

As Dave told me there is a noticeable difference with the 117 compared to the 114.

Radio is super nice! Very responsive and way easier to maneuver.

The cam un the 19 cvos is bigger than the 2018s. More lift and duration equals more noise.
