Front Wheel Removal?
« on: March 17, 2008, 04:07:33 PM »

Hey Guys,
Is there any precautions I should take when I remove my front wheel for detailing on my 07 CVO? Also, What are the Torque specs?

Thanks in advance

You paid 40K for the bike, before you remove the wheel I think you should be able to afford a shop manual, But that just me I guess :-*

Front Axle nut, 50-55 foot lbs. tighten first.  Hold axle with 7/16" drill bit or long bolt.  Then make sure drill bit is still loose enough to remove, but close to snug. This sets the proper alignment of the forks.  Tighten axle nut holders to 132-180 INCH lbs.

I can honestly say I've never taken the wheel off to clean it.

I can honestly say, I only cleaned it once.

But, you have to remember, I'm the guy with mold growing in the tourpack.

I love the color, but it would be useless for me. After buying the lift and all the tools/toolbox I would need I would have to start working on bikes full time to pay for it.

Can't be Gary's garage.
The bike is the wrong color.
Can you modify that picture and add some orange and black?

Gary's Basement Garage is a new vendor and as such may not be able to accomodate the usual below cost sales structure that many are looking for :wall:

You mean that 75% plus 10% off the original 100% or 85% off is not a profitable business venture?

I now strongly suspect you are one of those evil robber baron money grubbing capitalists espousing a for profit system of commerce.  Don't you know business exists solely for the pleasure of it's customers & if it makes any money, it is supposed to PURELY accidental?   ;)

Now it looks like I need a Bear Stearns type bail out from the FEDS.   :confused5:  I'm so confused the only solution I have is  :drink:

:nixweiss: :stars: :bigcry:  I always thought if I took in a dollar I had a dollar to spend.  Then I tried loose money on every part and make it up in volume.

Now it looks like I need a Bear Stearns type bail out from the FEDS.   :confused5:  I'm so confused the only solution I have is  :drink:

My first management decision was to sell money losing inventory items 2 for 1 & try to make up the loss in profit by added volume.  Production was never busier & we had more trucks rolling than ever.  Memories...

The Bear Stearns bail out caused a lot of folks to  :drink: heavily.  I applaud your decision & join you in this endeavor.   :drink: :drink: :drink:

I'm still trying to figure out what, besides the inside of the front fender (which you can't see anyway), you're not able to detail with the method mentioned above that you can with the front wheel removed. :nixweiss: :confused5: ???

That's the way I wash the bikes, too.

I did learn the hard way a few years ago the importance of strapping the bike down when the front tire is removed.  Tipping backwards off a jack is also not a good thing.

:worthless:

RK tipped backwards & something behind the back wheel (jack handle?) stopped it's fall while still BARELY on the MC jack.  No damage, except to my ego.   Had a couple of other jacks so I jacked it back up on them, secured it to the motorcycle jack with tie downs, and next changed underwear.

No pics - that memory reminds me to strap 'em down now.  Nobody else was home at the time & in retrospect, neither was I.

If it can be done wrong, I've done it.  Educated well beyond my lack of intelligence no doubt.

I have a good jack. (Yellow Sears) And That is normally what I use to detail the wheels. And if you place it correctly. It will only lift the wheel that
you want to work on. Leaving the other one on the floor. Which is very stable compared to lifting both wheels off of the ground.
We got caught in the rain last fall. And I did not have a chance to detail the wheels afterward. It left a nasty film on them. Even with good cleaner, It takes a lot of elbow grease to get off. ( Since I had only waxed them once, When I first got it last January.) I mean a slimy greasy film that leaves
little spots everywhere . And I read a few posts about wheels pitting. And I must admit. I freaked out!
I work on the road through the week. ( Have any of you ever spent a lot of time in a Hotel? Bored, Looking at the walls? ) So, naturally, I thought about taking the wheel with me and Clean and Wax, Wax, Wax, Wax!  And then , ???? I could do the Rear wheel another week. And Get the IDS and Install it while I am at it. And then, Maybe ???? AHH Hell, I do have it bad!
BUT I WOULD NEVER LET MY LOWER LEGS DIG INTO THE FLOOR!!! What was he thinking? It would be safe on the jack ( In the Garage of course!, With supports underneath, And a dust cover over the whole thing.
And VAZHOG is right, I do need a manual!  Hope to keep this bike the rest of my life! I still have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure that I really am not dreaming!

Special thanks to Skremineguio ! For the advise and torque specs.

Back to the mold in the tour pack... Umm you think storing it in a basement might be part of the problem? lol

Cold, damp, moist , places tend to spur mold on.
