Hey Guys,

Time to spruce up the garage thinking about painting  it with an epoxy coating. I know there are some great coatings out there and some junk. If you have done your floor or know someone that has with good results, I'd appreciate so feedback and insight  on how to do it right>>> Thankks Greg 

P.S.  At this point I'm not opposed to using tile either, again don't know enough about either way or for that matter the best way.

Hello mi amigo Greg....I remeber that Warren (flyingwillie) posted some pics about a treatment that he did the his garage.....it was around 6-8 months ago.....you can contact him, very nice person. I tiled mine with Armstrong commercial tile and really happy with it. If you seal it proper you wont get tire marks. And yup,, i did the black and white checkered pattern. I have pictures on my other lap top,, i will post some when i fire it up... Lets see pics of your garage, (or man cave) folks...

I did one of my garages with Armstrong Commercial tile and the other with a Loews brand epoxy. I was much happier with the tile !!  This is the only pic I could find (front fender of my BMW LT)

I just had a garage remodeling company called Garage Concepts come over and remodel my garage. They cleaned out the 30 years of junk, completely gutted the garage and installed new lights, Gladiator cabinets and benches with power strips and also a racedeck floor tile system.
I am VERY happy with the results!

My garage is probably about a car and 1/2 in size. They did all the labor so it was more than usual, the floor in materials and labor was $1,500 and the total job including costs of cabinets,lights,floor etc. ran about $8,000.
(See my separate thread for more complete photos of what was done.)
The big advantage to this setup is that all storage cabinets and work benches can be moved to a new garage if we move so it's not money lost.

I'm in the middle of doing my garage right now.  Still deciding on the ArmStrong CVT tiles or a RaceDeck style tile.  But whatever you do, DON'T, I repeat DON'T use the G-Floor roll out garage floor covering made by ( http://www.bltllc.com/blt_main.htm ) it is great stuff as long as you don't plan on driving on it, parking on it or using your garage like a garage.  I rode my bike onto it and it bunched up about a 3" hump in front of the wheel, when I called em about it they told me it was normal, and then refused to take back the one I'd rolled out.  I also asked what would happen if I used a floor jack on it, was told you can't use a floor jack on it, will crush right thru it.  I'm cutting it up and using it for covering my shelves in the garage....and telling everyone I can not to buy their product.....it's crap.  Anyways, good luck on the garage, I'm already starting to see the results, lookin better everyday......a few pics....

No Brad, two different garage's. The only thing I put over the tiles was a product called "wet-look" which gave them a sheen.

A guy in Calgary Alberta named Blake who owns a company called "Cross-eyed Air". I think it was the first BMW that he did. The sad part is that the guy who bought the bike when I went to the CVO only had it for a couple of months before he wrote it off. He felt real bad about it ----and I doubt that his insurance would cover the paint cost on the replacement bike.

If you go tile route, make sure you seal and buff with a good sealer such us Armstron tile sealer. It will help big time against hot tire stain, and other stuff as well. I spilled about a quart of acetone on my and thought i screwed the floor up... I appled another seal in the spilled area and it was back to new..

Might be to late,but I did mine with Rustoleum Epoxy a few years ago & am very happy with it.Didn't go the tile route 'cause I do a little welding & grinding in the shop.

I used the Rustoleum Epoxy 3 years ago and it's starting to come up now on the cage side. I coated the MC side of the garage very heavily (5 bikes at the time) and just put down a normal coat for the rest of the garage. The bike side still looks great but I'm really rethinking about a complete makeover for my MANCAVE

used sherwin williams kits to epoxy garage. 28x 40. need to complete clear coat which i'm using the oil base.

bought lots of extra flakes. anyone who is constructing a garage needs to do this at time of construction. what a pia this has been.

also put a drywall ceiling in with insulation. next step is a package unit.

they have a fine sand to put in for traction on the clear. plus i used four extra jars of flakes. adds a bit of texture.

oh gawd. its too late for me now. i did use muratic acid. did you use the oil base clear? i had the acrylic and was told to use the oil base.

I used the 2 part epoxy paint, which I was told was the toughest stuff out there shy of a linex type product.  Total load of crap.  Save your muriatic acid, you'll need to get the paint off the floor when you're ready for carpet!  When you get ready for carpet, make sure you use a 100% cut carpet.  The loop or cut and loop blend will only pull and string on you.  Guess how I know that?!  Oh yeah, most of the "industrial" carpets are loop.

I went with the professional epoxy.  Thought long and hard about tile as well.  I can tell you from experience if you do do epoxy it is like wine...cheap to very expensive.  I have done the cheap two times now and will not waste anymore time and money on them.   The pros spent three days.
Day 1: Bead blast, filled all concrete cuts, and first coat
Day 2: second coat and then granite chips
Day 3: lightly sanded only to remove sharp edges and then final coat
I am very pleased with the results. 
Cleanup after the snow and ice on my truck melts is the best.  The floor looks filthy and all I do is take a push broom load some clean snow in front of it push it over the mess and out the door.  It shines like you just spent hours mopping it, and it takes 2 minutes.

Yeah... that's MY floor, too! And I've got areas of some crappy gray paint that a previous owner applied. Found that doing a little burnout will remove the paint. Patina... yeah, that's it!

I used the Sherwin Williams 2 part epoxy & am very happy with it. Floor (25X25) was about 6 months old before I etched it with an etching powder which is acid based.. After thirty days I put the gloss clearcoat on top. Waited a week to park the bikes. 6 months later & still looks perfect. Mind you, my motorcycle garage does not get cars parked in it. Not sure if it would peel if I did. But I've dropped wrenches, wheel my bike lift around with no scuffs or gouges. THE MUFFMAN

Lifetime warranty.  He told me if I drop a pic axe on it and it chips he would come back and do it again.  I believe he would.  Makes most of his money off off of big box stores and car dealers.  He has thousands of pictures and tons of different options, and has been in business a long time.
     
I thought it was expensive, but it is like you said, write a check and enjoy it.  I hate to pay for things I can do myself, but when you look at the cost of some of the high quality do-it-yourself epoxy, and renting equipment, and then the warranty.    

I would do tile before doing the Home Depot epoxy again.

What is used to "clear" seal concrete in industry and the big boxes like Lowes?
I'm fine with the color of concrete, I just want to stop it from absorbing every drop or spill.

My neighbor is a cement contractor. Last week he stained his garage floor brown and used the clear coat coating. It's looks awesome. He said they do a lot of upscale homes this way and I'm talking inside the home. I never could imagine cement could look so good with a simple stain (it ain't cheap) and the clear coat brings out the shine. I've also seen some newer homes, models, that have the garage done in a asphalt granite type covering. I've never been able to find out what this stuff is but i like it,,, looks real nice in a garage. Sacramento Harley has the same covering in their store, but i think the stuff I've seen the home models looks better

The better ones are and are usually a mix of 2 to 1.  I put more hardener in than required & it is very durable. THE MUFFMAN
