Help, my bike doesn't wobble!
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:07:43 AM »

What am I doing wrong?  My SERK3 doesn't have the wobble people are complaining about on their baggers.  I can ride all day with my hands down by the trees (actually quite comfortable) while passing trucks, curves, and it is dead stable.  Tar stripes and groves don't effect it, mountain roads are fine.  I feel like I'm missing out on getting a Tru-Trak or Str8.  Anyone else have an unmodified chassis and no wobble?  If so, why some and not other bikes?

Don't know about 07, but my 08 runs steadier than me.  The new motor mounts fixed the problem.  :nixweiss:

Road Kings seldom had the issue anyway. My '07 SERK runs just fine at Autobahn speeds (that's 202 km/h or 126 mph measured by GPS). No modification from stock except the front fork baffle. The wobble thing happens usually with E-Glides, and these are a totally different story. I am looking forward to the '09 SEUC with the new frame. I hope it will not have the issues we've been plagued with in past years.

That is good to hear.

It was rear steer on mine, never had much front wobble, even with the fairing at a buck plus...
Exiting a highway on a long sweeping offramp turn about 60 mph or so,  it started pushing from behind(gawd that sounds dirty)...Ride str-8 and new shocks fixed it...

I don't seem to have rear-steering either.  I'm reading posts on the Bagger Brace and Tru-Trak and how they fixed the problem with the swing arm, and how it now handles so much better, and I don't seem to have a handling problem.  Or is it like the forks and shocks where you don't really notice there is a problem until you fix it?  Maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into getting a Bagger Brace, but I don't need the extra weight if I'm not going to notice any difference.

And while I don't make a habit of it, it has been over a hundred for a couple miles at a time with no problems other than running out of steam earlier than you'd think 90+ hp would.

DUH  HUH!
Can you guess what/who I was thinking about when I posted that?? First (only) time I've ever witnessed an extreme wobble was you know who. :vrolijk27: Had two things I was praying about at that time getting my bike slowed down, and the rider w/the wobble holding on. :nervous:

It's different on different bikes, and can change as you get more miles on those runner bushings. I rented a RK same year as mine while out of town, it handled the curves much better than mine. If I throw mine into a tight turn, I don't notice it as much, but on long sweepers it wants to wander around. Also notice it less when riding two up.

In my case, I never had a wobble nor did I think my bike handled bad. 08 SERK. But after my friend bought his 09 SERG and riding it through the mountain turns etc, I felt my bike didn't track nearly as straight. I really was not feeling comfortable trying to follow him up the canyon at the speeds he was going, I felt somewhat pushing it, He appeared to be having no trouble keeping the speeds he was.

So I have been reading all the stuff about all these braces etc. didn't think $300 would break my bank, so I bought one. I doubted the 09' Frame really would handle much better, but it seemed to be a nice improvement.

I looked at my cupped front tire and changed it over the the Dunlop E3, rode it seemed better, but not quite the same as the SERG.

The front forks don't dive on the SERG either, I changed my fork oil to the heavier oil after riding his bike, I did also like that better too. Both bikes have similar tires/sizes. I think the forks have something different in them (a oil valve restrictor, or something, not sure what its called? I looked at the parts book and it shows it. I think this has something to do with the fairing on the SERG. Anyway, the oil was cheap and I liked the results.

I put the bagger brace on, went out an rode it, took it up to 110mph was waiting to feel a major difference, I didn't. Probably because going straight or at high speed, I never had a problem before.

I rode it a few hundred miles, felt better overall when turning around town type stuff.  Then I went riding in the mountains with a lot of turns etc. I felt like the bike tracked in the turns much better. Pretty much like the SERG did. It just holds the twisty turns better. Then I rode two up for a 140 mile ride through the mountains ( same roads, I have been on before solo without the brace ) I really thought it handled much better. I think I noticed when two up I felt the most improvement. I believe I had more of a "Rear Steer" type thing than anything else, and the brace stops that.

I am happy with the way it is now, I believe it improved the way it tracks. It didn't cost that much, was easy to install and overall it was worth doing for me.

I did notice some at 110.  But I thought it was because of the big RK windshield that I was using.
My old RK has major problem on grooved roads or metal grids with rear steering, but not the SERK.

I never had a high speed wobble, just the rear steer problem. Still not sure which brace I'll go with, leaning towards the TWR. Only thing that wobbles at high speeds is my face! :P

Old age and no windshield!

That's why I don't use a windshield.  I keep hoping the loose skin will get pushed back and I can put a big chip clip on the back of my neck and call it a face lift.  :-X (that's the look I'm going for).

Okay, I'll tell the wife it's a safety issue and get the Bagger Brace.  She won't buy it, but what the heck.

Be sure to stop wobbling your face when it begins to hurt, you wouldn't want to sprain it or anything.  My friend crashed his bagger due to HSW and he was doing 55. He swears the swingarm bushings are the cause due to the stress of the motor and the mounting points. Anywho...his SA bearings were completely wore out and causing movement in the chassis. He's already bought a brace, he's just waiting for the rest of his parts to come in.
