A doctor, a lawyer, and a biker are sitting in a bar.

The doctor says "for our last anniversary, I bought my wife a diamond ring and a Mercedes.  This way if she didn't like the ring, she'd like the Mercedes and know that I love her".

The lawyer says "for our last anniversary, I bought my wife a pearl necklace and a Carribean Cruise.  This way if she didn't like the necklace, she'd like the cruise and know that I love her".

The biker downs his beer and says "for our last anniversary, I bought my wife a T-shirt and a vibrator.  This way if she didn't like the shirt, she can go f#@k herself".

I'm curious how this word came to be associated with wrongdoing.

It's latin roots are the same as the word grateful - -  actually it's a derivative of gratis which means in essence free or unemcumbered
