Charging system question....
« on: April 18, 2006, 09:51:08 PM »

Ok 01 SERG Started not charging the other day, checked battery it was low, imagine that with the charging system not putting out.  I checked the stator and has 7.5 volts AC at 1000 rpm and about 15-17 volts AC at 2000 rpm = bad stator I know.  Then checked the reg, no cont across the pins, but there is .2 to .4 volts from pin to ground which means bad diode in reg I am told.  So this means that either the batt (btw the batt still wont hold a charge) the reg and the stator went bad all at once or that the reg or stator went and took the rest with it when it went.  If anyone has that answer great.  But on to the real question.  What damn amps is the stock stator, dealer says 38amp, some catalogs say 45 amp.  Big price difference here.  Does it matter to the reg or the rotor if you use a 45 amp in a 38 amp or vise versa?  Any help would be appreciated.

You will need the matched set. You can put in either a 38 amp or a 45 amp. Just make sure you have the matching regulator. I am really not sure what your came with my guess would be 45. There is a difference in size of the regulator so you might want to look at both. Someone on here must know for sure.

The catalog says it's a 50 amp charging system...at least that's what the street glide says in the specs, so I'm assuming all "GLIDES" are the same.

The difference might be an 01(serg) model compared t0 an 06(street glide) model year. The 50 amp has not been around that long.

if i were in this situation i would go with the biggest charging system that was compatible. but then i have a heated seat, heated gear, GPS, and a radio that we'rent OEM on an SERK. so far its been able to keep up. but you never know what you might add down the road..... the way far off wish includes heated gear for the Mrs. maybe a hawg-wired setup i'd hate to limit my current draw down the road for a few dollars more no when something needs to be replaced anyway

Thanks for all the help. Two dealers and one good wrench later we find out that it is a 45 amp, I ordered a Reg and I am changing the stator right now.  Lot diffrent then my custom with open drive. I know I saw the torque on one of the posts on here anyone remember off hand?

Read another post on a differnt forum that said the 99 to 01 Touring and police rides had a 38amp stator with a 45 amp rotor (bigger mags) that will cause almost all of them to fry in time.  They dont have a recall, but the is a service notice and a replacment part number whish was the same as the number they sold to me.  You can clearly see the bad spot on the windings of the old stator and the wire is a smaller gauge as well.  Fired her up getting all good numbers from the stator now ;D  Just have to wait for the new reg now
