Advice on an Enclosed Trailer
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:54:35 PM »

I want to purchase an enclosed trailer for my '06 CUSE.  I have been looking at some 6'x10' v-nose trailers and also a Featherlite 6'7"x10' v-nose.  I only planned to haul one bike but now am thinking that maybe I should consider getting something that would carry two dressers.  I know that a 7' trailer is the minimum for hauling two dressers.  Can anyone give me some advice from their own experience about hauling two Ultra Classic's?

I really didn't want a huge trailer, but I want enough room so I don't have to worry about the bike touching inside.  I will be using Bike Pro wheel chocks.

I have a friend who has one of these ( pricey, but are they nice, and can tow with less than large truck!):http://internet-trailer.com/IronHorse.aspx

I used a trailer similar to this to haul my bike to MV GTG. The one I used was several years old, and the company at that time that was making them was Excalibar <sp>. This trailer was set up for two bikes, and it hauled really nice, never felt it back there, and the gas mileage wasn't bad at all.

My big concern is hauling two Ultra Classic Harleys.  Is a 7 foot trailer wide enough?

I've seen advertisements that a six-foot wide trailer (6X12) could haul two full-size dressers. Never tried it, but as long as they were staggered I think it's possible to do with a six-foot wide trailer (it's going to be tight, but doable).

I can tell you from expereince that you may be able to get two full dressers in a 6' wide trailer but I wouldn't put my bike in there.  Not unless you want them to rub.  7' foot has to be a minimum.

Dakota

needs to be at least 7'
7 X 12 is ideal so you can stagger the dressers.

Is the 12' foot length enough or would 14' be better for staggering?

You have an 8' bike, the 12 works fine
As Scott says above, 14 will just give you two more foot of room but is 2' heavier.
I have a 8x20 and a 7x12 and a 6x8 open trailer
The 7x12 gets used most.

We bought a 07 Haulmark V Nose Lowhauler 7X12 Dual Axle. It has the cabinets, interior lights, as well as the Condor wheel chock system. One great thing is the trailer fits in the garage no problem which is nice to keep out of the weather. Mainly haul one bike (07 Ultra Classic Screamin Eagle but at times can haul the 07 Road King SE next to it with room. Best way is to pull the Ultra in on the right side and put the second bike in the Condor backwards (can do the same with the Ultra's). Best place to purchase is Bluegrass Trailer (saved $2,000) in Louisville,KY area. Send a private email for pictures of trailer with bikes loaded.

FWIW be sure the 7 foot is an interior side wall to side wall measurement..........

I haul 2 dresser in a 7X14 V front 2 axle. With the V front it gives you room to haul extra gear. Most definately you need 7 feet wide.

IMHO   NO!!!!!

The last trailer I had (before the toy hauler) was a 8.5 X14. I held two SEEG's with no problem. Even at 8.5 in width they can still touch if they start to move. I use ratchet straps only now with soft straps and Condor Wheel Chocks.

I have to agree with Dawg, I have a 8.5 x 24 Featherlite that is set up for 2 bikes up front and a short car (911, Cayman etc.) and I have had my FXDWG and Ultra in there.

Two things, they are close enough to the wall with the handle bars it leaves little room for maneuvering or strapping them down and you want room to be able to easily get around them and swing a leg up.  No question the wheel chocks will help but I would go for the width if it were me.  I also borrowed an 8.5 x 14 from a buddy for a long trip and it worked great.

Also, why limit yourself to the bikes on the width.  If you decide to sell the trailer the wider one will have more buyer interest than the narrow one.  Consider as well that in the 14' you get a dual axle with Featherlite which IMHO is a big plus for handling/stability.
